CanuckCamper Posted October 21, 2012 Posted October 21, 2012 Looking to tie some copper johns and would like some opinions on what to use for the "epoxy" back. Old school pattern recipies call for mixing up a batch of 5 min epoxy. I am aware of the newer clearcuregoo products that use a uv light but have none of the above in my tying kit. Any recommendations welcome. Thanks. CC Quote
gottalovecutts Posted October 21, 2012 Posted October 21, 2012 I use UV Knotsense, makes a nice finish and super easy.... Quote
Flytyer Posted October 22, 2012 Posted October 22, 2012 A few coats of Hard as Nails will work quite nicely 1 Quote
TerryH Posted October 22, 2012 Posted October 22, 2012 There are also some "shoe goo" type products that work well in certain fly tying applications. For example, I've used a product from Tana called Sport Gloo, which is very much like Aquaseal, but dries much more quickly and is much less expensive. I have not used it for copper johns, but I have used it when tying Jensen's Ultimate Boatmen, and it works very well. Quote
midgetwaiter Posted October 22, 2012 Posted October 22, 2012 I use UV Knotsense, makes a nice finish and super easy.... I've used the UV wader repair but I find I loose some of shine with it gradually. Flies still work but I was wondering if the knot sense cures shiny or goes kinds matte? Quote
troutlover Posted October 23, 2012 Posted October 23, 2012 knot sense gets a little milky but still works. Quote
SilverDoctor Posted October 23, 2012 Posted October 23, 2012 Used 5 min epoxy for years but now use hard as nails, a couple of coats. Quote
Guest 420FLYFISHIN Posted October 25, 2012 Posted October 25, 2012 nail polish when ever possible it a great product for painting heads, clear shells, and poppers Quote
SilverDoctor Posted October 25, 2012 Posted October 25, 2012 By the way, whan I tie commercially I use 5 minute. For myself non at all. Don't find it makes a differance. Quote
Guest 420FLYFISHIN Posted October 26, 2012 Posted October 26, 2012 100% agree, i put a dot on just for a bit of glue over anythign else Quote
FraserN Posted October 26, 2012 Posted October 26, 2012 I use a special nail polish with kevlar. It creates a clear, hard shell for my nymph backs. Quote
CanuckCamper Posted October 27, 2012 Author Posted October 27, 2012 Thanks for everyone's thoughts. Quote
flyangler Posted October 28, 2012 Posted October 28, 2012 Just be careful not to use too much clear nail polish in a humid or damp environment. It can get cloudy white spots. If in doubt, use several thin coats and allow it to dry between. Quote
searunbows Posted June 7, 2015 Posted June 7, 2015 A little bit of nail polish remover on the UV knot sense after you have cured it with your UV light usually helps keep it shiny for awhile. 1 Quote
