  1. A comfortable pair of waders and boots. If you aren't comfortable in the waders you won't last long in the water. If the boots aren't comfortable to walk in you won't want to cover distance to get to some of the good fishing spots that are more than 50 feet from a parking lot. On the non-gear side, invest in casting lessons. Watching a video or reading a book doesn't compare to live instruction on the water. Once you have some casting basics down, you may want to book some time with a guide who can show you some decent places to fish. Fish Creek park is a pretty popular place to get your feet wet without driving or walking too far. There are usually a lot of other fly fishers out there as well and most will answer any questions and give you some pointers if you ask nice. Keep in mind that the Bow isn't necessarily the easiest river for a beginner to get into fish, though...
  2. I've had luck with a sparkle pupa and soft hackle for imitating emerging caddis pupae. Try fishing them dead drifted in the film or even better put a small split shot on your leader an inch or two ahead of the fly and let it swing. When it gets to the bottom of the swing the fly will rise imitating the pupa rising to hatch. Fishing a caddis dry or cripple with a pupa dropper will cover a couple of bases for you too.
  3. http://www.flyforums.co.uk/showthread.php?t=24909 Scroll down to the 9th post for pics of the new Marquis. They look pretty much like the old ones to me, except I guess they don't say Made in England on them.
  4. Did anyone else know this week is National Fishing Week? Canada AM just had something about it (with a pro bass guy and no mention of fly fishing of course).
  5. Don't trust system recovery. If the system is still fairly clean (as in no data stored on it) reformat and reinstall clean. If you only have one computer for your company you don't necessarily need a file server. You can do standalone, but get a second hard drive identical to the one you have and set up disk mirroring (RAID 1). Both drives will have all the same data, so if one fails you can just pull it out and run off the other. It'll be a little slower when you write to it, but the read times will be a little faster. Ideally you would have a separate drive with your operating system and programs installed on it and the mirrored pair of drives only containing your data files. Any decent techie should be able to set that up in no time flat. That would also cover your third redundancy. Techies disagreeing about which hardware is best is kind of like us disagreeing on which fly rod is best. I've seen a lot of drives from a certain manufacturer fail within a year, so I'll never buy another or recommend them. A friend of mine has had way better luck with that same brand of drives so he swears by them. It's just one of those things I guess....
  6. When I used to do tech support I always advised people to do a test restore with their backups about once a month or any time they modified the backup parameters to make sure it was working properly. I know that's little consolation now, but a good habit to get into for the future. Could it be that the empty drive you're looking at is the new one and the old one isn't connected properly? They may have installed the new drive as a master and not switched the jumper on the old drive to make it a slave. Or the old drive may not be connected at all. If it is the old drive that's empty the data should be recoverable with a program like the one birchy suggested unless they did a secure erase of the entire drive or something.
  7. What about trying a Loop Opti or Multi single hand line on it? I use them on my single hand rods to do double spey and snap t casts all the time. They have shorter heads and bigger bellies than most single handed lines with a colour change between the head and running line so you know how far to strip it in before casting. If your friend decides double handed rods and spey casting aren't for him, the lines still work great for overhead casting so he won't have wasted his money.
  8. Try doing a search, the same question has been asked before. It's like asking what the best rod/reel/car/truck/etc. is. You'll get at least one suggestion for almost every brand of waders on the market - Simms, Patagonia, Cloudveil, Wardell, Dan Bailey, and so on. Here's the last thread on waders http://flyfishcalgary.com/board/index.php?showtopic=4048
  9. Heh, I had some of that on yesterday and they were still dive bombing me and buzzing around my face and trying to get me through my shirt. Didn't get bit, but the smell of that stuff gives me a headache after a while.
  10. Saw this entertaining article about people who cheat in fishing derbies and thought I'd share. Reeling in the cheats
  11. Here's an old article on lunar cycles and bass fishing http://www.in-fisherman.com/magazine/artic...0602_BitsLunar/ Wouldn't be surprised if it affects trout and other species as well . At the very least a full moon gives you more light to fish those late night hatches
  12. This is the thing Brad's talking about: http://www.symantec.com/en/me/security_res...-99&tabid=2 I don't think that's it, though. You'd be seeing a message pop up on your screen all the time and other files like Word docs and Excel spreadsheets would be missing as well. Still a good idea to give the computer a scan with up to date AV software. Being a Mac user I haven't touched Vista at all so unfortunately I can't really help with that end of things.
  13. It was back in April if it's the same one I'm thinking of.
  14. Thanks, I'll try that as a starting point.
  15. Try these guys: http://www.hardyandgreyscanada.com/compone...id,1/Itemid,17/ They carry used Hardy reels and might have a Marquis or Prince. They also pop up on eBay every so often and I've seen sites for private dealers of "classic" Hardy reels if you Google "hardy marquis".
  16. Is there a general rule of thumb for converting 20lb backing capacity to 30lb? For example, if I had a reel with a listed capacity of 200 yds of 20lb but wanted to put 30lb on instead, what would the capacity be roughly?
  17. I'm in a city with an LL Bean and just picked up the Gore-Tex PacLite Stowaway Wading Jacket . Good price for Gore Tex and the two big bellows pockets on the front will fit most big fly boxes.
  18. I took the dog for a walk by Bearspaw dam on Sunday and the vis did look a little better than around Southland but the water was still quite high and fast. Saw a guy fly fishing around the pool downstream of the dam but he left before I could get close enough to ask him if he had any luck. I might give it a try one night after work next week, but I'm not expecting much.
  19. I asked the same question a little while ago: http://flyfishcalgary.com/board/index.php?showtopic=4086
  20. The Bow running through Fish Creek Park is open all year round like it says in the regs. Fish Creek (the creek that gives the park its name) is not open until June 16th.
  21. I usually start by casting straight across to let my streamer get down and mend a few times during the swing. From there I can adjust the depth by casting further upstream to let it get down deeper or cast downstream so it doesn't have as much time to sink. All depends on if you're fishing a sink tip line, weighted streamers, etc. I always wait a couple of seconds at the bottom of the swing before I start stripping it in. Most of my takes have either been on the dangle or the first strip, although I've had the occasional hit during the swing.
  22. I use a combination of Barry Mitchell's Alberta Fishing Guide, the back roads map book, and Google maps.
  23. Thanks for the info Brian. I've been using 5 wrap albright knots with a thin coat of knot sense so I'm not sure how much of a difference that would make. Right now I have the end of the tip folded over with two nail knots about a quarter inch apart from each other to secure it. Btw, happy birthday! Here's what the tip looked like which is why I thought the mono cut through the coating.
  24. I'll probably get some next time I buy something bigger from Whistler. Been eyeing a Multi sink tip line for one of my single handers...
  25. http://flyfishcalgary.com/board/index.php?showtopic=3868 http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&rls...amp;btnG=Search Lots of conflicting opinions and studies out there.
