  1. Marketing is what is leading us to believe that the more mp’s the better the quality. This is not entirely true. A point and shoot camera even at 12-15mp will not even come close to having the picture quality of a 35mm camera. It really comes down to the size and type of the sensors in the camera, not just mp. A full frame sensor is about the same size as 35mm film. Most consumer slr’s use a sensor that is 25 -100% of a full frame sensor. Point and shoot cameras use very small sensors compared to a full frame digital slr; usually about 3-7% the size. This means that the pixel size of a point and shoot camera is actually quite a bit smaller than a full frame digital slr even though their mp rating is equivalent. This is why a point and shoot will have substantially lower print quality compared to a slr with a larger sensor. Next is the quality of the pixel value but that’s an entirely new subject. Digital cameras also have to convert from the analog world into digital. This process varies greatly in cameras and in turn produces differing results. All of this, plus much more, equates to the quality of picture. You would be surprised how many 6mp slr pictures there are in print today.
  2. How does one know the optimum amount of line to have out prior to shooting line? I know this depends on the line type and manufacturer but is there a general rule of thumb?

  4. I take it you've been simmering for awhile Clive. Is the that the whistle on the kettle I hear?
  5. Check this article out. I wonder who the "sources" are, how the priorities are set, and who's telling the truth. If there’s any truth to it, I personally find it disgraceful. Cutting a 1.9 million dollar budget from a group that protects nationally significant habitats for wildlife and birds? Give me a break; we probably spend more money on toilet paper for the MP's in a year. From: http://www.cbc.ca/story/canada/national/20...anada-cuts.html Serious budget problems at Environment Canada are threatening wildlife programs and services within the federal department, freezing allotted money for some and reducing funds to nothing for others, CBC News has learned. Of most concern to conservationists among a handful of cuts is that the Canadian Wildlife Service has had its service budget frozen for the rest of the fiscal year, meaning all its scientific field and survey work has been halted. The national wildlife agency is directly responsible for studying and protecting wildlife in Canada and puts out the Hinterland Who's Who public service ads. "Wildlife doesn't have a voice, and sometimes the results of cuts today aren't realized for many years," said Sandy Baumgartner, executive director of programs and communications for the Canadian Wildlife Federation. Sources say the budget cuts are as follows: • The Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Network, which observes changes in ecosystems, has lost 80 per cent of its budget. • The Migratory Bird Program, which monitors the health of bird populations, has seen its budget cut by 50 per cent. • The budget for the National Wildlife Areas, a program that protects nationally significant habitats for wildlife and birds, has been slashed from $1.9 million to zero. Bob Bailey, a hunter and conservationist, was shocked to hear the federal government's support for Canada's 144 National Wildlife Areas has been reduced to nothing. "I simply can't believe. Have we become this urbanized, have we become this uncaring that these places could be in jeopardy?" said Bailey, who is with the Delta Waterfowl Foundation. Sources told CBC that funds to those programs were slashed after Environment Canada overspent its budget. Environment Minister John Baird wasn't available for comment. His department sent an e-mail stating that no programs have been cut and that spending is being prioritized for climate change initiatives. "The government has been clear that its priorities are being a climate change champion, and taking real action to provide clean air and clean water for Canadians," the e-mail said. "We think Canadians are supportive of those priorities."
  6. Never done the trip. According to my topo maps it's about a 40km trip on the river. Here's the outlet from Kamloops lake on google. http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=50%2e7575,%...02,0.02&t=k
  7. I took a mountaineering course in 1979 and stayed at Aster lake for 3 days. I remember it being full of fish. I had a small spinning rod and remember pulling one after another out of there. I don't remember what they were though. By the looks of your picture the lake level seems way down. The surrounding glaciers must be disappearing. Interesting picture, brings back a lot of old memories. I'll see if I can find a picture of the lake from when I was there to post. It would be an interesting comparison. Btw, is Mount Joffre in any of the pics?
  8. Blob Fish / Jimmie Durante Any others out there?
  9. Anyone here have any experience fishing the Chinchaga river in Northern AB / BC? It sounds like I will be in the area sometime this week for work and am curious if anyone knows the area and what the fishing is like. Thanks
  10. So which end would you light?
  11. There may be a few Flames fans on this forum but if you're looking for "HOCKEY" fans maybe you should post on an Edmonton board!
  12. Did they look like any of these?
  13. With Calgary being the fashion capital of Alberta, I figured these must be quite popular with all the pretty boys down there.
  14. Aw come on, I was looking so forward to it!
  15. There are several scientific studies that have been performed to determine the effect of barometric pressure on the optic nerve system of fish during times of increasing and decreasing barometric pressure. It essentially comes down to this. There are a few select species of fish the studies involved, two being the rainbow and brown trout. The studies have found that pressure changes in the eyeball of the fish, due to barometric pressure changes, put varying pressures on the optic nerve system distorting the vision of the fish for sometimes hours on end. With rainbows, as the barometric pressure is increasing fast, the studies have found that sometimes there is so much pressure put on their optic nerves they can actually go blind for minutes to hours on end. This does not appear to happen in the browns although their vision will become greatly distorted. On a fall in pressure the studies have proven that there will be distortion in vision but not to the extent as when the pressure is increasing. It is evident that the vision is distorted in such a way that size, color and texture are altered to a great extent. Furthermore it was proven unquestionably that Browns prefer grasshopper patterns when the pressure is falling, and rainbows prefer grasshopper patterns when the pressure is increasing. This is due to the fact that when the pressure is falling the browns eyeballs are contracting and the hopper pattern actually looks like a stonefly to them therefore they will take it. It is the exact opposite with a rainbow, as the pressure is increasing there is so much pressure put on the optic nerves they go blind for a while. This is typically the time they bump into Toolmans’ stonefly. Fact or fiction?
  16. Cut,copy,paste..... So did you lick your elbow?
  17. Lone, I think that's the shell back coming off but it seems too dark compared to the PT that is still in place. I had a well experienced fellow at Muir last night tell me he figures it may be a shrimp pattern although I'm not sure what the biot would represent. Here’s a better image:
  18. Good job boys that was a great watch.

  20. Does anyone remember my comparison of barometric pressure to water pressure on a fish at a given depth from FFA? If I remember correctly a fish moving in up or down in the water a foot or so would equal the entire barometric range typically seen with weather. Therefore I must "COMPLETE" Dave again and say I "COMPLETELY AGREE WITH HIM". BTW, this theory all has to do with the fish having to adjust their swim bladder to compensate with the change in barometric pressure. If I must I'll post the calculations again but whoever asks for them will have to tie me a dozen flies. I just don't feel scientific today.
  21. Nope that's the tippet, no antenae.
  22. Anybody know what this fly pattern is? I’m sure I found it on the forum at one time but can’t seem to find it searching here or in any of my books.. It’s quite beat up, but seems to have some luck catching big fish. Help would be appreciated as this fly has been a killer up north here this year.
  23. MTB - I think a lot of people that travel considerable distances want the stream or river they are heading towards to their own, then if it turns out that's not the case they're pissed. I know what you mean and there is no excuse for the type of behaviour you experienced. The simple fact is if they travelled 500 miles to fish a stream they figured no one would be on, then discovered there was 50 fisherman lining the shore, they should try and make the best of it, without being a jerk.
  24. Is that LocalYocal I can hear running to his computer?
  25. Sounds like you need a big bandaid. Looks like you boys had a great time. Great pictures MTB.
