  1. Excellent post Rob... Sorry to hear of your loss. Greg
  2. Hi John, good luck and I hope you have a successfull clinic. I don't mean to hijack your thread, but I hope you don't mind a bit of discussion on the subject. I use these methods here in S. Alberta on a regular basis and they are indeed very effective nymphing techniques. As for negative impacts on the fishery, would you care to elaborate a bit DutchDryfly?

Looks like you guys had a lot of fun... Good Spey water... ...
  4. And that's why you should NEVER use a net...
  5. Real nice photo's guys. Thanks for the post.
  6. That's a giant Brown, SJW. Here are my best Brown and Rainbow trout from the Bow...
  7. I don't believe there are very many trout over 10lbs in the Bow. The shorter growing season, available food sources and colder water temps of the Bow, would be my guess as to why the New Zealand trout are larger.
  8. Thanks to everyone for showing up for the Friday night Spey party. It was a lot of fun. In attendance this evening (L-R)... Jdangler, Hammertime08, Bhurt, Wetduck, Headscan...I'm behind the camera. WETDUCK launches one into the sunset... A big welcome to the newest members of our Calgary Spey Clan, JDANGLER and HAMMERTIME08. Till next time...
  9. Awesome...There are at least 5 casters who will try and make it out this evening. I've got 6 of my Loop Spey rods loaded up and I'm heading out....
  10. Fishing on the Bow during prime season is like driving on Deerfoot trail at rush hour on a Friday. Some folks have manners, some don't. Some are ignorant to the etiquette rules, others just don't care about anyone else but themselves. Having more rules and regs on the Bow is not the answer. We have much bigger problems on the Bow river, IMO, that can have devasting long term consequences. #1 on my list... POACHERS! Lets get rid of those bass-turds.... R.A.P. The hotline #'s on the back of your license... Please make the call! Thanks... ps. Sorry for the hijack...carry on. :derby racer:
  11. I'll be hitting the Bow this evening (Friday) to play with the Spey toys and work on the casting skillz. Everyone is welcome to join me for a few hours. I'll be on river left (east side), across from the Fish Creek Boat Launch. I should be there around 6:00pm, maybe earlier.
  12. The Ridge running lines have been working fine and I have used them for the past couple of years. Lately, I have been experimenting with a rod length of 30lb. Ridge running line as a holding line, followed by 30lb Stren Stamina High Vis. Gold, which is a saltwater mono, for my shooting line. The Stren Stamina is quite stiff, lays out nicely on the water and shoots very well. You might also consider these lines for your Beulah 7116 Spey, an Airflo 7/8 Scandi Head cut to 32' @ 385 grains or a Vision Ace 6/7, 354 grains @ 10m for a lighter feel or a 7/8 cut back too 385 grains.
  13. .... Happy Birthday Chris...Many thanks for all of your generous contributions to our flyfishing community.
  14. Both...
  15. It sells for $389.
  16. Happy birthday Al and many more.
  17. Picked up the new Airflo Skagit Compact Kit from Fish Tales today. Pretty sweet...Bombs away! Complete set of 10 Heads, 2 Ridge running lines (20lb. & 30lb.), Line/reel case with two reel compartments. Lots of storage room in the top lid for sink tips, polyleaders, Spey lines, running/holding lines, cheaters, tippet spools etc.
  18. I'll have to remember to wade upstream of you next time we are fishing together, Rick.
  19. Thanks Crogg, that's an awesome pattern.
  20. Swing this Skid Bitch in the evenings and hang on tight... Berrett's Golden Stone Barred Leg http://www.idylwilde.com/onefly-new.php?fl...IG2388&desc Sorry that I can't provide the tying instructions.
  21. Flow rates have dropped from 300cms too 150cms in the past two weeks and the T-8 tips are now effective. Soon, floating and intermediate tips will be my go to set ups. I would like to try intermediate sinking heads for the fast riffle water.
  22. A fast sinking Scandi head would have been excellent during the past 6 weeks of high flows on the Bow river. I used 14', T-8 tips, with weighted flys and seldom got hung up through the swing untill the line almost hit the bank on the hang down. Fortuneatly there were lots of trout holding in the slow water along the bank and striking when the fly finally reached the zone. There were many fish holding further off the bank in very fast water, but it was difficult getting the fly down deep enough and getting the swing speed correct.
  23. Hi Al, The front tapers on Scandi lines are too fine and do not have enough mass at the tip to turn over a sink tip as heavy as T-14, unless it was a very short piece. The front taper of the Spey line must be at least 14 grains/foot to turn over T-14 and then there is the mass of the fly to add as well. The majority of Scandi lines work well with medium size/weight flys and sink tips up to T-8, around 70-80 grains total. Some Scandi lines have fine tapers, such as the Elixir, AFS Heads, while others have stronger tapers, such as the AirFlo, Guideline PT, Vision Ace Short, Tonic Heads. T-14 is for very large/heavy flies and deep and/or fast water. For Skagit, there are some lines that have a tapered tip such as the Airflo N.W. Skagit head, which allows the use of T-10, too about 90-100grains. Compact Skagits can handle T-14 and large flys with ease, as there is very little front taper and the line weight at the end of the Head may be 20-25 grains/foot or more.
  24. Awesome report Brian. It's great that the trip turned out to be a big success. King on the swing...way to go buddy!
  25. Rick, the smaller trout are usually pushed into the shallow water along the shorelines. When the flows drop back to near normal, the fish will settle in for the summer and there will be areas holding many small trout. I call these areas, nursery runs and usually avoid fishing there, but sometimes when I am swinging flies to the bank, the little guys hit. Last season, there were a lot of small trout settled in the run across from the FC boatlaunch, also in the trib at Mallard point, Bonnybrook, below the Southland bridge etc.
