  1. Just wondering if anyone has a Meiser Trouter, or any other Meiser that I could demo. Also interested in Burkheimers if you have one. I have two handers from Sage, Hardy, Loop, and Pieroway if you're interested in giving them a cast.
  2. x2 As for eye style affecting hooking and holding power, I think this is more a factor of shank length and style of bend.
  3. As appealing as a new rod and line are, unless your fly is obscenely weighted, your rod and line should be more than sufficient to get you way out past 10'. Spend the money on lessons, or meet up with someone from the board, most are more than willing to give out great advice for free, or hire a guide for a float, or walk and wade. Most guides will not only give you some pointers on your casting, they'll impart all sorts of knowledge upon you to regularly get you into more fish. Plenty of good casting instruction video clips on youtube, or most fly shops will have videos to buy/rent, or borrow. I'm no casting instructor, but in my experience, and things I work on: generally people have to wide of a casting arc, in that they stop too far back on the back stroke, and too for forward on the forward stroke. Their stops aren't crisp, they cast too quickly and start the forward stroke too soon....watch Joan Wulff, one of the best casters ever. She's proof it's technique and not power; never in a hurry, always smooth, and can cast to distances most will never see.
  4. I've had the unfortunate luck to catch way to many pike minnow this year all over BC. If it hit hard, and then came in like a wet sock...it's a pike minnow. They almost look like a trout from a distance, the mouth and the heavily forked tail, and the total lack of fight usually give it away. The ones I've caught usually have a brownish-green-gold colour and more defined scales almost more like a walleye, though some of the smaller ones I've caught are more on the silver side. Rick: If you want to catch one, let me know next time you're at your condo. If I'm up there I'll show you where to get some, but hopefully we get shut out of pike minnow in favour of some nice rainbows, and big bulls.
  5. Good on you for calling it in...RAPP number is on the back of your WIN card
  6. Stopped by Hansons at lunch today and was pleased to see that they're carrying Hardy. The pricing is considerably more in line with US pricing than I've seen in the past, so I ordered a bunch of spare spools for my Hardy Demon 9000. At just over $20.00 a cassette I couldn't help myself. The reel comes with 3 cassettes, and though I only have about a year in the world of Spey, I've acquired more lines than I have reels and spools. Also noticed Wayne had a few Guideline 11' 6/7 LPXe switch rods on clearance. Anyone have any experience with these rods? They looked to be about 40% off. Seems like a great Bow River Rod for those looking at a switch rod.
  7. Unlike what I said about the TCX/TCR, the XP is a very 'fishable' rod. Sage brought it back for a limited production run after it was discontinued to fulfill some of the demand for this great rod.
  8. I've only cast the TCX which is the replacement for this rod, and supposedly a more "fishable" rod than the older TCR. If you're looking for an all purpose rod, I'd look somewhere else. The TCX, and what I imagine the TCR would be are not that great for short line situations, but really excel when you need to bomb'm out there. It's a do one thing and do it well kind of rod in my opinion... a great rod when used for it's intended purpose.
  9. I wear wading boots with these Flipfins
  10. It's a pretty heavy jacket, I use it during the winter with a hoody underneath, water resistant, not waterproof, and figure you'd melt in it in summer temps. Simms, Patagonia, etc all have light weight packable 100% waterproof rain jackets that would be much better for summer use and are designed to hold fly fishing gear. Pretty much any waterproof jacket with a few good sized pockets will work though.
  11. Nice to see someone take this on. The image below shows most major flyfishing related logos. Hopefully you can draw some inspiration from this.
  12. I want to like Flymax, and think it has huge potential, but the entire show looks like a half hour preview. My wife thought it was a commercial, and couldn't believe it when I told her that the entire show is like that. They go to a lot of great places, and have some great hosts, how about hearing more from the hosts, about the places, rigs, flies, fish etc. Other than nice scenery, and fish porn, the show doesn't really provide anything to the viewer. The New Fly Fisher is probably the most educational, and does a great job of covering the entire country. I love the On the Bench segments of SFOTF, and the fact that Don and his guests do a great job of explaining tactics, just too many still water episodes for my liking, and a few too many episodes on the Columbia.
  13. sage Xi2's are on clearance right now, and make a good streamer rod. Doubt any of the local guys have any 690-4's left, but with the high Canadian dollar, you can pick them up for a good price out of the US.
  14. This isn't unique to Sage or new to Sage, many brands, Orvis, Sony, Nintendo, Apple do the same thing. It puts all of their resellers on a level playing field by not allowing a larger store to sell products for a lower margin knowing they can make it up in volume or related purchases. These policies in particular protect the smaller stores who wouldn't be able to compete with the volumes of a Bass Pro or Cabella's. It's my understanding that this has been Sage's policy for years. I was under the impression that all resellers are not to sell their products for less than MSRP unless there is a line that is discontinued, or for special occasions like a shops grand opening or anniversary...perhaps Sage is getting stricter in enforcing their policy. Check out the prices on any current stock of Sage, Hardy, Orvis, Simms, Patagonia products across Canada, and you'll see that the regular price on these items is almost identical
  15. Fishes: Rainbow Brown Cutthroat Bull Brookie Cuttbow Tiger Golden Grayling Pike Perch Walleye Whitefish Sucker Burbot Chum Pink Sokeye Bonefish Pike Minnow Rodents: Beaver Muskrat Dogs: Golden Retriever Humans: Ron (leg) Tim (leg) Ike (ass) Allan (back) Misc River Junk: 4' piece of angle iron...gotta love Maxima! half of a ripped up plaid shirt wind breaker sandle
  16. Check out the Bow River Shuttles site, they have some good information on Float times, put ins and take outs. Here's an excerpt from their site: 1. Glenmore Bridge (Graves Landing) to Fish Creek Park: A good day trip in an urban environment. Local guides will confirm that fishing is just as good within the city limits as it is further downstream. 2. Fish Creek Park to Policeman's Flats: A very popular late afternoon/evening float, or a short day trip. 3. Fish Creek Park to McKinnon Flats: A popular day trip. 4. Policeman's Flats to McKinnon Flats: A shorter version of #3. More time to walk and wade. 5. McKinnon Flats to Johnson's Island (Carseland Weir): Another popular day trip, quite different from the upstream reaches. 6. Fish Creek Park to Johnson's Island (Carseland Weir): This is a popular two day overnight camping trip.
  17. To help with hookups on your existing flies with not enough gap, you can try bending the point out to the side siwash style. Any 3x or better streamer or nymph hook should work fine. With the buoyancy of the foam, you don't need to worry about the extra weight of the hook. A Tiemco 200R or equivalent is nice for big foam flies, stimulators and hoppers.
  18. x2 Our defense needs to get better, absolutely no run stopping ability, and overall poor tackling. Too many guys going for the highlight reel big hit instead of getting their arms around the ball carrier and making the sure stop! We need an Alondra Johnson type linebacker, hopefully Barker has something coming soon with the NFL cuts.
  19. Not sure, wish they'd change to a standard tube.
  20. The GPX will do it all, though lacks somewhat throwing dries, that said, I'd say it's SA's best do everything line. I fish the GPX most of the year, but switch to the more supple XPS in the winter, and when setting out to fish dries. Talk to Dee at Country Pleasures, he used to rep for SA and Sage.
  21. Unfortunately, the Sage Flights do come with the reel pouch and not a standard tube. Like 420 says, PVC pipe, glue and a couple of screw on end caps and you have a strong, cheap tube.
