  1. I have to agree that Cabela's fly section is trash. Only good thing I've ever found were the Grubb wading boots... cheap and awesome! I tend to stick to either fish tales or OFF. Was a southbow guy before they closed shop.
  2. I get it now Bob, thats why you always tell me to take the first crack at the runs... I'll have to change it up after getting my first skunk of the day with you the other day
  3. Just finished up my 6'6 2wt rod, and am looking for a reel for it. What is everyone's experiences with light weight reels? does it boil down to looks and preference, balance, etc?
  4. After careful consideration, I am going to purchase a 7wt GLX switch. Reason being, is although I have a 7wt rod that I do greatly enjoy, it will be nice to have a multipurpose, especially in the water I mainly fish. Plus, I already have a reel and floating, sink tip and now have a spey line a friend has sitting around. I'm hoping it will be a good addition and that I'll enjoy it! Thanks for all your advice, but most the spey rods were just over budget, and I would need to purhcase reel, line etc. Perhaps in a few more years.
  5. I'm actually from the shuswap region, living in Calgary for many years now, and looking to spend more time out there this summer, and perhaps even relocate to the lower mainland in the next few years. This is why I am looking for a rod appropriate for steel and salmon! What I'm seeing from most people, is the 7/8 range sounds like where I'd want to be, a bit light for big chinooks, but would probably do the trick for most others. I'm just waiting to hear back from the shimano rep! Here's to hoping
  6. So I have to wait and see if shimano will let me pay the difference between my card and the rod price, if they don't, I will probably be looking at the GLX stinger. If they allow me to pay the difference, i will most likely aim for the NRX Scandi! The wait is on to find out what Shimano comes back to me with.
  7. Looking at getting this rod with my gift card, does anyone have it, or anyone have an opinion on it? I'm looking for a 7/8 wt that I can multipurpose for steel and salmon, as well as getting into some big rainbows in BC. This will be my first spey rod, but being that it is 'free' I'd like to make it a good one. Has to be a Loomis rod as its the shimano gift card ($1000)! http://www.gloomis.com/publish/content/gloomis_2010/us/en/fly/rods/steelhead___salmon/roaringriver_dredger.html Thanks in advance slivers
  8. Going back to the original post, I don't need anything from Shop Shimano online... I'd like to focus on my fly gear. I'll be selling that card. i posted it on another forum, can you post a gift card on this site?
  9. horseshoes - I got 1000$ card for Lowes at the home show, and a free digital design consultation for a home media room! Can't win if ya don't enter
  10. I think it is good for Luongo, terrible for the canucks. Luongo will make the Canucks pay for the way they treated him. As a Canucks fan, I found it terrible how they've treated him over the last couple seasons... He handled himself well, but I think the Heritage Classic was his last straw, no matter what he said in the press conference... he didn't seem all that surprised or upset about it.... Happy Wife is a Happy Life - Luongo is back home with his wife and kids now! Mike Gillis will probably be moved to unemployment following the deadline, and the canucks not making the playoffs... Now I know how flames fans feel Golf anyone?
  11. Selling it is another option I suppose, I didn't read anywhere that I personally had to use the prize. I'd feel bad doing that, but if it buys me a spey rod, I might be very happy! lol
  12. Thanks for the input guys. I like the idea of purchasing a couple spin/bait setups for friends who do no fly, in case I try to introduce a friend to the addiction! Apparrel is always nice though,, I must agree! It is limited, http://fish.shimano.com/ products listed on this site only. I'm such a noob to the steel chuckin', more so than the fly. I have one shimano rod, the clarus med-hvy for pike action and medium rainbows, but thats all! hmmmm....
  13. Well, I won a grand prize $1000 shimano gift card from WFN at the fly expo - almost fell off my chair when they called me! Being a solid fly fisher, I'm faced with apparel and conventional gear to purchase as it only applies to the shimano brand it seems. What goodies would you buy? I'm not overly intersted in salt water fishing yet, however could venture near the coast to fish for salmon in the rivers.
  14. Really too bad to see this shop close. I never ventured into any other fly shops in the city, other than wss and bps. Hit up the fishin hole once or twice as well. Southbow was a great place to bs on a bad weather day, the guys were always full of information. Taught me a lot, in return I told them how I did. My first two years of fly fishing wouldn't have been what they were without these guys and their fantastic shop. Thanks a lot - good luck with what ever path you may take.
  15. Well done buddy - we'll have to get out and make a new page next week
  16. I never knew to 'lube my line'. Will start as I want my rio to last me atleast 2 seasons
  17. When writing a provincial violation, the officer has the opportunity to fill out their own section, which the offender never sees. In this section, the officer will likely write that he let the offender off with a warning regarding the barb violation, and issues the second violation instead. That is the only logic I can see, as it shows the courts / crown that they were given a break already. Could be wrong though! I say write them all, let a judge decide if its overboard!
  18. So my order for the beginner book failed, and amazon read sold out when I retried. So I ordered the regular benchside, and put a priority on it. Hopefully it gets here quickly! I have found many instructional videos on your tube, and am watching them trying to pick up technique quickly. The guys at Southbow have been helpful too! Sat down there for nearly an hour the other day learning how to use the whip finisher, and BS'n about life, fishing and the bad weather! Good bunch down there, nice to see them as a sponsor on this site
  19. Perfect, it had a thicker tail at start, but i read somewhere to use your hands, not scissors to shorten the marabou, and broke a bit too much off. I'll try a few more later in the week. Work and soding my lawn must come first. I'll continue to post my progress in this thread, and welcome all feedback.
  20. What exactly do you mean by shagginess? What portion of the fly? the body? Any tips on how to make it shaggier?
  21. Here is my first fly. Just a small size 14 leach pattern. Looked like a good spot to start. I think the tail is a bit long, but we'll see what you guys think Critique please
