Hi all, I'm having a hard time finding a product called Hi-vis. It's a type of Antron but is not spooled. I think it is by a company called L&L Products Who I've tried contacting without any success. If anyone can help me to find this stuff, it would be greatly appreciated. I like this particular brand due to the colours they have. Any alternatives or substitutions welcome. I haven't been able to find a good selection of Antron around town. Thanks Sean

My dream fishing destination is not just the destination, but also having the time. South Island New Zealand........but spending 3 months+ exploring and getting into the back country.

I went to Speedy Apollo on 17th for new front rotors for a toyota matrix. They quoted me more than toyota genuine (i called heninger) I went across the road and bought the pads and rotors from Auto parts ($50 and $80 respectively) Then went to Courtney Automotive (10 ave sw - tricky to get to) Charged me 1hrs labour @$110 Front end done for around $250 They are pretty reasonable. My advice is just buy the spare parts. (Auto Parts will lookup what you need for your make, model and year.) and then just pay for the mechanics for their time.

The TFO BVK is a great rod for the price ($250 - $300). I did a Bahamas bonefish trip and I bought an 8wt BVK. The best thing about it was that before the trip, I went to the warehouse here in Calgary and bought 2 spare sections (top and 2nd for $25 each) It was a good thing i did, because the 2nd section broke whilst playing a fish, and I had the replacement on hand. Its not going to compare to a top of the line Sage or Loomis, but it's a decent rod for the price, and excellent for travel.

Thanks guys, yes i am using a stacker. I guess, it's a LOOKS thing for me as well. I'm confident that the fly will work and catch fish. It probably just annoys me more cause im looking at a store bought one which is perfect, and i cant match it even though i keep trying different things. It probably will work better given it isnt packed as tight. Still though, thanks for the advice, i'll keep trying.

Hi, I've been trying to tie some Kelly Galloup SexDungeon streamers and I keep struggling with tying the head. I can generally spin deer hair ok, but as soon as I have to tie around the lead eyes, I just can't get a complete full finish. there are always gaps and the front of the head ends up very sparse I have some commercially tied copies, and the heads on these are perfect. Does anyone have any tips on how to do this properly or links to any vids that focus on how to finish the head properly? I'm guessing there are times when I need to spin and other times when I just need to flair the deer hair in place. I do have the collars down pretty well. Any tips or tricks recommended. thanks

Hey fishinglivin, so you're like the polar opposite to me. I am completely unlucky. At the pub they have a game called Toss the boss. 50/50 coin toss, call it right and the round of drinks is free. 10 rounds of drinks, I lost 9 out of 10 consecutive calls. Who looses 9 out of 10 times with 50/50 odds.

x2 Hi Relk19 I think your setup is fine for the bow. Don't be disheartened by your lack of success on the Bow. It's not an easy river and last year was tough post flood. I do think there is something to be said for better gear, but you'd get more value out of at least a half day guiding. Just make sure that its a walk and wade session, cause you're not going to learn what you need out of a drift boat. The 2 benefits to the guide are that 1. They are going to correct your technique and setup to make sure you are nymphing/streamer fishing correctly 2. You get to use their quality gear, so you will know if its actually the rod that is making the difference Basically you take the gear out of the equation and focus on what it takes to catch fish.

My dad has one. (its about 10 yrs old, Large I think) He has this whole procedure for cooking turkey in it. i.e. when to wrap it in foil, when to remove it, when to add water for moisture etc. It comes out really moist, so much that I dont mind eating turkey days and days after christmas. Not dry like the oven, but i also suspect he's putting more time into getting it right in the BGE. I prefer the taste when cooking over charcoal, but the BGE gets really hot and i find it hard to regulate the temperature. Harder to cook the smaller stuff like chicken wings, drum sticks etc without burning them. Like cmakski saysm it takes a year to get it working for you, with lots of stuff ups in between. enjoy!

hey MrBotangles, thanks for posting. It's great to see the bull trout population come back and do what they do best! Some people need to chill and maybe re-assess what they do as a sport. As fly fisherman, we are all guilty of antagonising trout with every fish we catch. Can't have it both ways. Sure, we do our best to ensure that the fish go back unharmed, but sometimes we get caught up in the excitement of it all. Keep up the greats posts!

As a visitor to calgary the 1% of budget for art is an interesting concept. I have only seen a picture of "the ring", but agree, it does seem pretty ordinary and could have been better spent. I like art, but what seems to pass for art these days confuses me. Usually these pointless "art" works end up with some funny nickname. I can only imagine what that big blue ring will conjure up! That said, I do love the brown and rainbow trout along Glenmore trail though! Confirmed for me that i moved to the right provence. (I did see a photo of this mural painted on a building in Poland i think which is pretty creative)

Hi, I was looking at the g3 convertables as well but decided against them and got the full chest g3 waders instead. All g3's are top quality so that wasnt the problem. The main issue for me was that the verticle back strap wasn't adjustable, and the 3way buckle was quite high and ended up sitting at the base of my neck which was very uncomfortable (and im 5' 11") It wouldn't have been an issue if I could remove the suspenders, but they looked fixed and sewn in. I later figured out that the plastic clip that holds the suspenders in place actually has a slit in it so you can remove the suspenders and I could have customised the suspenders to be comfortable. At the time I didn't want to pay $500 for a pair of waders that i'd have to cut strapping and mess up the suspenders. So yes, if I had my time over i'd buy the convertables given that the suspenders are removable/customisable with a bit of work. One other thing i've found is that pant waders wear differently to regular waders. I find with my pant waders that i had to buy a slightly larger size so i could crouch down without the waders pulling down below the waist and also so i could lift my leg over fences etc. cheers Sean

Hi guys, Does anyone fish out of an Aire Super puma or PAC 1400 etc? I'm thinking that it would suit me as I dont have a 4wd to launch a drift boat. I'd probably keep it inflated on a flat bed trailer and carry it down to the water when. I can't get the car close enough. Would like to get some opinions on their fishability, especially with the rowing frame, and where in Calgary I could get a look at one. cheers Sean

Hi Jtaylor, I was fishing the same night, same conditions so I know exactly what you were talking about. (River: deep pool, with muddy bottom, slow current, and very low visiability) I didnt get anything either. The only other thing i can add is that the fish were far out from the bank where i was fishing. i.e. I was waist deep and had to cast 40-50ft just to be in the zone I put it down to 2 things: - the fish weren't consistantly rising. there would be a surface take and nothing for over a minute. i think these fish are probably moving and aren't sitting in the same spot - because they were so far out, there was no way of getting a drag free drift. As to what they were taking, i have no idea. I dont think it matters now. the bow looks blown with all this rain

Similarly to calgaryguy1977, I've found the start to this season slow going despite the great weather which should be warming things up. (I could swear that the caddis hatch was already going by this time last year.) WyomingGeorge makes an interesting point about changing up the nymph rig till you find what's working. This past weekend plumeja and I polaroided a few fish and they rejected the usual BH-pheasant tail, prince, copper johns, evil weevils, hare's ear, stonefly nymphs etc We we're stumped. In the end, a single san juan did the job. We only got the one fish on the worm, but we had several shots at others and they all kept rejecting the usual nymph offerings. my 2cents.

I enjoyed the show. I got to test a few of those crazy expensive rods. Now I need to convince the missus why I need one! Just wondering if people bought any rods at the show, and if they were offered any really good discounts? Also, does anyone know of some of the bigger fly fishing expo's that are either in Canada or US.

Hi Smitty, My trout reel is a lamson lightspeed which i've had for years, is ultra light, ultra smooth and has a great finish. I can highly recommend this reel, but it will be out of your budget. I am therefore biased towards Lamson because I've had a great experience with them. I went through this exercise myself whilst looking for a bonefishing reel, similarly confined to a $300 max budget. I looked at the BVK and Hardy ultralight as well as these were within the price range. I ended up getting the lamson guru 3.5 for $250, (the trout size is about $200.) My friend got the Lamson konic. Both reels did a great job in actual fishing and being put through the salt. The finish isn't as nice as the litespeed, but the sealed drag system is spectacular especially with a bonefish on the other end. The smoothness of the drag was really noticable when I switched to a different reel for a day. Check out the new Lamson Speedster reel. It comes in under $300 and looks fantastic. I figure if the reel can hold up in the salt and on a bonefish where you actually rely on the drag, then it will do a pretty good job for an everyday trout reel. cheers Sean
