  1. Be careful with the tie off method. Stretching the line does Two things...it somewhat straightens the coating for a short time but more importnatly it stretches the coating and introduces minute cracks in the lines finish. Even Polyurathane coatings will get damaged.

Hey its not like I'm trying to pull my truck, just a light stretch of the line. Some tackle shop owner on the island told me about that method. Ice fishing for Kokanee eh? Think I'm gonna have to try for a couple Canadians right now. :P

  2. Colin,How did the Hardy line work?and the Rios? BTW got the pics of Emily'' you are a lucky man for the time being??!!

Hardy running line was like a slinky in the below freezing temp, Outbound was a typical coil as well (didn't do the tie off to bumper trick and stretch before using trick). Perhaps the standing on an ice shelf as opposed to being in the water and having any extra line in the water was a factor as well. the guys using the Elixirs didn't seem to have any problem so i guess its time to change for the winter (still like the Mach 1 salmon in the summer though).

  4. 3 down many more to go, have to make sure I've got the number programmed in my new phone. They couldn't have been the most experienced poachers around, normally when you pull out a cell phone and start talking on it when poachers are around they tend to high tail it out of there, these guys just kept on casting oblivious to anything, next time though I won't be talking to the wife I'll be calling the CO's.

  5. I found my AF Delta 7/8 coiled up a fair bit which I found odd since people talk about winter steelheading with them all the time. Odder still was that my same line in a 6/7 did not. Perhaps it's the thicker line on the 7/8? In any event, it was annoying.

Gonna have to bug Courtney for some Elixirs when he's here, the guys didn't seem to have any problems with them today. By the way I haven't seen so many Beulah rods in one place since I was on the Island

  6. If you can wait for Islandguy to return from Prince George, he should be able to provide you with a couple options as I believe he has the same rod or at least a similar 6pc Lami (replaced 4 guides for him last spring).

  7. I toss a 10wt Outbound on my 10'6 7/8 switch when overhead casting off the beach. 420grains turns this rod into a cannon and 100ft+ casts are easy with a single back cast, as far as a spey line its a bit of a dud. I will be using this combination for pike fishing, should toss those big streamers way out there.

  8. you don't really want to cast that rod..I personally don't have One and will get CDone (if he will)build mine for me....my wife has One and rarely lets it out of sight incase I am about..Damnit!I have used those shooting head and others Ie: Loop,Air Flo and Hardy. If it's distance you want then that is a great way to go...the running lines can be very slick and offer little resistence through the eyes. On the Lower Dean River in BC I use Shooting heads a lot because the distance is about 140' and mending the line is of little concern...Unlike the Thompson where mending the line is a benefit..water clarity is really an issue between both those great Rivers.

What I really like about the Shooting Heads you mentioned is that they come in gram weights corresponding to rod weights, for example a 20 gram(308.64 grains-divide grams by .0648) is rated or recommended for a 6/7 Two Handed rod. They go all the way up to an 11/12 or 48 gram line...wow;incredible versatility. However, these heads have distinct fron tapers for both single and two handed uses. Voila..keep it simple

If you get the blank to me quick enough I could get it done before the show, only 2 rods on the go at the moment plus a 10'6 4/5 Switch for myself. That Sage is going in the mail tomorrow.

  9. I'm sure Don could point you in the direction of some usable cane. For planes you might want to check out Lee Valley, not sure how they compare budget wise but you're not buying forms so spend a little more on a good plane, you'll use it again anyways.

  10. I decided to keep the tension mechanism simple. I am going to position eye screws along the base and insert a ceramic bobbin through the eye. The bobbin will give the tension to the spool and an elastic cord will keep the blank under tension to keep the bobbin from slipping down. Should do the trick.

Thats what I had for the first dozen or so rods I built, worked great, I just have a bad habit of over engineering everything that I build, you should see the bench I build on, movers hated me when the had to move it. :P
