  1. Perhaps my short of the stick comment was alittle to broad of a stroke for this conversation.. still miffed the north gets everything easily long before the south... *cough cough LRT* but I wouldn't disagree that one could be put up there as well.... ( after 194th)
  2. On the west side of the river Bcube not east. Placing more launches outside of the city limits would likely be a provincial issue Bcube. and has to deal with private land owners who likely dont want a road down to the river, traffic or a parking lot on their land. I am not mentioning this to make a great 2 hour float, I am talking from a purely an accessibility standpoint. I am not sure about the small inconvenience you talk about... it is a fairly large one. Right now if you live pretty well anywhere south of fish creek park, you have no access to a boat launch or take out point except for driving way up around fish creek park through sikome. That would include a fairly large bit of population in Sundance, Chaparral, Walden, Legacy, Silverado, Shawnessy, evergreen and bridlewood. All of whom would be serviced by a new proper launch / take out at 194th. Not to mention, you can take all major roads to get to it, Ring road, Divided highway on Macleod tr south and 194th is twinned all the way to the hill down into the valley.
  3. Perhaps I am missing something, but I would like to see a boat launch on the side of 22X specifically on the west side bank. maybe something at the end of 194th ave. Down here we get the short end of the stick. there is a boat launch on the west bank up near Sikome lake which everyone knows about.. The downside, is the only access to it is from the deer run side. That means you have to drive way up and around fish creek just to do a big loop back to where you started from. other than that, you have to float down to policeman's flats. Right now 194th avenue, runs down towards the river then dead ends about 3/4 of a KM away from the river in a small makeshift parking lot. If this road and lot was extended to the river, it would make a perfect spot to have a boat launch or take out point, which would be accessible to the people who live in the communities who are south of fish creek park. just a thought.. im curious if anyone else thinks another one is needed before policemans..
  4. Having started about 5 years ago myself, I personally think this is the best advice you can use.. Find a fly fisherman to go with and fish with..... You can watch DVDs, youtube , read books and listen to podcasts which are all great as well.. but Absolutely nothing will beat on the river experience and someone to tell you what you may be doing wrong. Whether it is a guide you pay or just meeting up with forum members, this is by far the best thing you can do to start.
  5. Black forest is alittle expensive.. Garbage bins could work, but for my purposes would be too small.. I think the shorest piece I would want to use is 6' long..
  6. Hey Mike.. thanks for the props.. Tools required... hmmmm well I am thinking there could be several options. But to make the one you see here, I used: a router with a 1/4 roundover bit ( you could use a sander to soften the edges.. but for an even top notch job a router is the choice) a dewalt table saw ( not a big industrial one.. just a small contractor style one) about 10 C clamps (3") a jig saw ( to cut out the template on which to mold the strips) Belt or orbital sander ( I used very hard woods so.. so all the rough sanding was done with a belt sander) and lots of sand paper 100 through 600 grit. I really enjoyed the process... although it was alittle frusterating and some trial and error as i snapped 2 or 3 strips while bending them to the form. would love to see what you come up with if you go ahead with it.. I am not on too much but feel free to PM me if you need some tips or help.
  7. Done and done!! had to get out today to do just that. Wasnt the biggest fish, but a beauty rainbow christening of my new net, "Trout wrangler".
  8. After being put on the back burner for awhile... I finally finished the net. here are some pics of it all varnished and strung up. Enjoy

  10. After reading on this forum... I decided to try this out. It isnt as simple as one might think.. and takes more time then I expected. But the resulst so far are fantastic! I used Rosewood and Maple. The frame is VERY sturdy. Going to put a ghost net on it. I think I am going to build a large boat net next..

  15. All Zenni optical glasses are there own designs ( no brand name frames or lenses)... Personally I have never had any of them, but a friend has and them and they fell apart within about 9 months. anyhow... I recently just bought my second pair of Bolle sunglasses and I would reccomend them and seriously check them out.. They offer RX in almost all the styles they carry, and the RX lenses are made by Carl Zeiss. Different models have different lens options, but generally you can get 5-10 different lens options (colors, polarization, anti reflective coating etc) for what suits you and the use best. They even have modulator or transitions lenses you can get for your sunglasses. I bought mine from ( Optics Planet ) I went with a Jwalker frame with a green colored polarized (bolle calls it axis) lens with the anti reflective coating and they Cost me about $310 including shipping.. Which is pretty good considering locally they wanted about 550-600 for the exact same thing. All I did was go try on bolle sunglasses here in town to find what ones you like and fit you well, then I ordered those ones from there.
