  1. Last time I went to Timmies I thought I was gonna die of old age
  2. Another amazing story Rick ! - geez man, I can't stay in a closed meeting room for more than an hour without getting loopy let alone being locked up in a sub for 70 days - thats wild, I think I'd risk becoming a "Tim Treadwell" sandwich before ever signing up to get in one of those things.
  3. 1) Bow river - Still haven't fished it below ghost yet. 2) Cutthroat stream - there is a local stream(creek) that is isolated from the bow via a tall outlet culvert. It is spring fed with a high iron content so the fish are copper coloured (Look like goldens, but actually cutties) - been donating flies to area trees and bushes regularly but the creek is only 3 ft wide and tree covered so I have yet to catch one of these guys. Need to pick up a 6' 1 or 2 wt rod just for this creek. 3) Still water - Monster laker on spey at Hector - Remember in "Carrie", the mothers voice repeating "They are all gonna laugh at you - they are all gonna laught at you" been hearing that in my head everytime I cast into that hellish wind down there LOL - would love to land a 30" or better laker on spey by the end of summer (from shore !).
  4. Dave - I've done some crazy stuff with mine, with the exception of the $25.00 brass oar stays you would need to drive back a forth over it with my truck to actually break it. Not a bad idea renting them out but be sure to CYA on the liability side. Pretty generous idea and I would imagine alot of folks here would take advantage based on the frequency of questions related to a first pontoon purchase. I let anyone who wants to use my disco 9 have at er - thing is indestructable as far as I can tell
  5. I bought an SLV this year for my 5 wt - First two months it was great - at this point the drag is running inconsistant - I know the problem is solved with a little maintanence but none-the-less all my other reels typically last much longer into the season before needing work - its just annoying !- other thing I don't like is the stripped line is easily picked up and hooked on the drag adjuster dial, especially if, like me, you occaisonally rotate clockwise when shooting line. I own a 12wt Trion on my spey rod - I'm going to pick up another one for my 5 wt too. (or that new pink islander - LOL just kidding !)
  6. Yep - technically called "Visitor Resource centre" (VRC) - located on Banff Ave - The hotel, or anywhere else you go will have maps that give the exact location. I think its 9 bucks for a day or 35 for a year. Bow river is open year-round - enjoy your visit !
  7. Seems overpowering is the bain of the newbie AKA me ! - my often sore shoulders attest to my lack of skill LOL Been concentrating on the weight transfer and sourcing 90% of the power from the anchor hand (lower) instead of the upper - when the tag (anchor) is small and in the right place, it is like the planets have aligned and the cast requires almost no effort - doing this consistantly is the tough part - I am actually finding it easier on my left arm instead of right (old habits ingrained in the right I guess) Been messing around with the snap-T cast, not only fun and cool looking but easier to pick up than the single spey. TM - seems my compensator is meant to be used with the sinking tips only- lurking around the rio site is helping me sort out my problems with set up - I think the shorter rod forces me to avoid the cookie cutter approach to my set-up Ironic we call this forum a "lounge" LOL - I love your philosophy Doc - my gut is like the borg - resistance is futile - can I please have a burger, for which I will gladly pay you on Tuesday - on that note I'm going for lunch !
  8. Truck with a topper (and opening windows) has been one of my best purchases ever - Even moreso with the dog when she is wet and dirty.
  9. Call Wapiti in Canmore - Monods in Banff - or Wilsons in Lake Louise all good options for walk and wade in the park. All in the phone book.
  10. I leave everything in the boot room - constantly switching between spey, one handed, shore, hiking, pontoon and belly boat set-up. hiking/shore kit goes with me everytime I leave town. Be careful what you leave in your car at trailheads - alot of break-ins lately - especially at overnight spots such as Ohara and Skoki
  11. Downwind - use the search feature with "pontoon" - been plenty of discussions on this topic discussing features and different models etc etc
  12. Chris PM sent - please respect my instructions as the spot is on private land.
  13. Hey Gordon ! Wasn't there one more big pastime in Scotland Click here
  14. After reading about the great condom prank rick wrote about I figured I would share a pretty good one I pulled on a new employee a few years back. About 8 years ago we hired a couple 18 year old kids to work as general labourers. One of the kids, Justin, had an attitude that to this day I have not seen matched. He could do anything faster and better than any person on earth to hear him tell it. He had no sense of humility or respect what-so-ever. He was so bold that he claimed he could bed any woman in town married or otherwise. He was literally driving everone at work nuts with his super-ego. Anyway, along with many of my coworkers we just sat back and let him rant knowing that life has a way of eventually straightening fellas like Justin out. One day he asked me if I would help him set up his first ever email address. I took him to hotmail and set him up. Over the next few weeks I kept catching him on singles sites. It occured to me that I had a golden opportunity to mess with his head a little, another worker and I came up with a plan that would knock him down a notch or two. I created a false identity on hotmail named Janice. ( we created a whole image and personality for her just to be convincing) I had "Janice" email Justin claiming that she saw him on a singles site but he logged off before she could send him a message, luckily she had noted his email address. Justing bought it "hook, line and sinker" As Janice and Justin began their cyber relationship we let her evolve from a shy little sweetie in a nasty, nasty, nasty girl ! This carried on for three months to the point that the things these two were writing back and forth would make a porn star blush. Seriously - I mean dirty and nasty way beyond what could ever be described on this site!!!!! - Now remember I had Justins Hotmail password still from setting up his account for him so each week we would print the last 2 or 3 previous emails both sent and recieved by Justin with Janice for our own edification and entertainment. After three months of friggin splitting our sides once a week laughing at Justins emails in the local pub, we decided to set up a chat session - A buddy named Doug had been begging me to let him in on it but I wouldn't because I was afraid Justin would figure it out but none-the-less at the chat session Doug showed up pretending to be Sherri, who was Janice's sister who also was bi-sexual and into threesomes as well. In the next few emails we let Justin know that the girls were from Calgary and they finally wanted to get togther with Justin for a night of fun (Hot oil, strap-ons, whips, handcuffs - there was nothing we didn't suggest that Justin wasn't willing to do to hook up with these two sisters). A fatefull Friday night was set as the meeting date. Well, let me tell you, Justins attitude reached a new pinnacle of ridiculous that day. He walked around all day telling anyone and everyone that would listen that he was scoring two bi-sexual sisters that night, and it was gonna be the best night any man had ever had. He was so bold he told everyone that if they wanted to see the two hotties stop by the grill (our local pub) at 6pm that night. It was so hard to stay cool all day without blowing our cover, especially when he spent his entire lunch break in our managers office begging for the afternoon off so he could clean up his apartment and get ready for his big date. Of course our manager knew the ruse and made him beg for half an hour just for his own entertainment, before letting him go home. The last email we had sent, asked him to explicitly describe everything he was going to do to the girls that night since they were both such dirty sluts, and they needed to know that Justin could truly live up to their expectations. Usually there are about 5 to 10 people in the pub after work on a Friday, on that night I counted 35. Justin showed up at 5:30 and began to let us all know that we were total losers and when we saw his girls we would all be running to "ahem" within minutes of seeing his hotties - he went off, in that manner for the next half hour. Only about 10 of us knew that it was all a joke so justin and about 20 people were all lined up in the windows checking out every pair of girls that got out of a car in the parking lot. At exactly 6pm I stood on a table and began to read the nastiest and most descriptive email he sent the day before. I'll never forget the look on his face as he turned and listened in utter shock. I got 3/4 of the way through his email before he finally reacted and ran and tackled me off the table. At this point he still hadn't put 2 and 2 together and surprisingly scolded me for having his email as he ripped up the paper he had eventually wrestled away from me. I couldn't believe it, he tossed the paper and went back to the window, at this point 2 or 3 guys were already on the floor unable to hold their laughter any longer. I tapped on his shoulder and introduced Doug as my sister Sherri and Myself as Janice - didn't sink in, he just said "ha ha" and turned to the window again - we had to repeat this process 2 more times before he finally clued in (of course by now the whole bar was in hysterics). All night he was tackling guys as they would randomly pop up on a table and begin reading another one of his hundreds of entertaining emails. The bartender did show mersey and offered him free drinks all night, needless to say the razzing continues to this day. On a side note - remember in the sun (nationally) a couple years ago there was new Canadian law established. It was the first time ever a non-biological father had been ordered to pay child support by the court - yeah ! that was Justin !
  15. Glad to hear your OK B !
  16. Thanks for the info fellas - I'll fish with it this week ! Think I'll post a wanted ad see if I can't find a reel to match. (A big chunck a billett look pretty outa place on it)
  17. Hey great tip I've been chucking the ones that come with pills in my toolboxes for years (out of habit, up here tools don't rust like they will in ontario with the humidity out east) Thanks
  18. I was poking around the thrift shop in Canmore a couple weeks ago and in a back corner I found a vintage fibreglass rod - They only wanted 10 bucks so I figured at minimum it would look nice up on the wall in my tying room. I am curious if anyone knows any history, or a resource where I could look up a history - just as a curiousity - a friend in town here who builds bamboos told me he thinks it was from either the late 50's or 60's ( I am getting his help to revarnish it this winter - unless someone tells me that's a big mistake) Heres what I know: It is a fibregalss 2 piece 9" with metal ferrels, One stripping loop and the rest are snake guides It is labeled "MAJOR ROD" with a red maple leaf beside it on the logo It is burgandy in colour (the gloss is completely gone if it was even there when it was made) The wraps are really cool, done with thread that alternates between white and black.(so the Black/white stripes are thick at the tip and thin at the base, neat !) Typical sectioned cigar type handle Hard black plastic butt end (with an aluminum cap, lock ring & slider) Despite rummaging through all their boxes couldn't find a reel (bummer) The other night I figures "what the heck" I walked down to the bank and tried casting with a 5,6 & 7 wt lines - the 6 worked like a charm and as a matter of fact it makes for an awesome dry presentation. I am taking it out to a lake nearby with a bunch of 2lb brookies in it, hoping I don't break it - let me know if that is a bad idea Thanks for any info !
  19. 13 years on the fly, Only the last 5 would be described as obsessive. 3rd year tying flies, 1st year on spey. 40 years of BS-ing about fish caught LOL !
  20. Good Luck and fast recovery big B If your at Peter Lougheed ask for Brian "the fly guy" when you need a porter (he's a non-internet guy so you won't see him on here) He's an awesome guy and he'll totally cheer you up - We hooked up and fished the Bow near Hector after my last knee replacement. He also ties some killer flies, maybe you can weasel a few out of him (and tell him Rob says hi) And remember everything, and I mean everything, comes down to your ability to sweet talk the nurses LOL
  21. Last season I was all about mornings - pretty well every day off I was coffee in hand and on my way by 4:30-5:00am - Fishing was consistently good but I found it exhausting to get up so early, hike 5-10km then be home early aft for all the normal domestic pleasantries such as shopping, chores, visiting friends & family, etc etc. This year I decided to focus on evenings and as a result I am spending much more time on the water - I find it easier to get out after work without feeling exhausted the next day - in the last 14 days I have fished 13 times, a frequency that would have killed me when I fished mornings. I find the quality of fishing similar but in terms of quantitiy the evenings are now my preference and my journal and numbers clearly relect that.
  22. Patagonia Alaska Belize I'd bring a couple Jessica's along (Biel and Alba, or maybe a Simpson) - What !! gotta do something when your not fishing ! and the post said anyone ?
  23. Every hour of winter OT becomes an hour and half of summer fishing. My boss is OK with me using 40 hours of my annual leave as "spontaneous, must go fish-now, leave". In the winter - different story, but worth it for the summer freedom
  24. In the new Can Fly Fisher this week...designed specifically for swinging. Looked like an awesome spey fly so I tied up a couple and tried em this weekend - fly really is deadly with bulls and casts great with my 5/6 weight. Going to try it as clouser as well. After spending the weekend with a couple blue fingers I am happy enough with it to buy some blue hackle. Wondering if it will work with browns as well ? - Anyway was thinking if anyone was on the fence for trying this one I would let you know it does work great, even on wary bullies.
  25. Can't believe I just paid long distance charges for that hilarious
