A friend and I are on general tags this year and have been trying to get an elk with the bows. I've pretty much trashed a pair of boots with not much to show for it. they are still pretty high up with this mild weather and it's tough going. It's been a good deer year so far though.

What I don't get about the Calgary Famer's Market is the organic, holistic hand waving garbage. An "organic" cucumber that tastes like wood is just a crappy cucumber, I don't feel like paying $4.00 for it.

I've tried a few different lines with mine and I go back and forth between the Rio Mainstream for longer casts and an Orvis 6wt DT for up close work and nymphing. I was going to try the Rio Gold but I got a sweet deal on the Orvis. I also have a Rio Nymph / indicator line that I really don't care for on that rod, it doesn't seem to load quite right for some reason.

I need some help and a chance to vent a bit. I was at Ware Creek today doing a little fishing and scouting for bow season. I was working my way downstream from the Ware Creek Rec area parking lot when I had to detour into the bush to get around some deadfall. There is a meadow just a little less than a km down from the parking lot where there is access to the creek and signs people camp there sometimes, I imagine some of you are familiar with it. I'd heard music for a while so I knew somebody was there but what I saw when I came out of the trees was brutal. There's a nice corner pool there just before a riffle where livestock and atvs cross. Upstream of that there is a wide rocky bank that had TWO Dodge Dakotas parked on it with some tents and a little camp setup behind them. These jerkoffs had used the meadow to gain access to the creek and rather than drive across had then turned upstream to drive the 30 meters to their spot. There wasn't even enough room for the trucks side by side, one of them had two tires in the creek! This part of Ware is never going to be a hot spot or anything but it was one of the first places I did any small creek fishing and I am rather fond of it. I can't explain how angry I was as I made my way down past a completely destroyed pool to see the creek choked with silt all the way down past the next several turns. I was so mad I completely forgot that I had a camera in my pack. I decided to make my way back up through the meadow to see if I could get their plate numbers, unfortunately I ran into the five idiots belonging to the trucks before I made it over there. I wasn't going to say a damn thing until one of them asked me how the fishing was... let's just say I have a bit of a temper at times. I opened up with "Fine until some stupid A$$hole parked his truck in the stream" then I really let fly. They seemed astonished I'd have a problem with this. This confrontation kept me from being able to sneak over and get their plate numbers without thing getting ugly though. However I am supposed to head out to the same area tomorrow to scout around a bit more with a buddy. If we can get some pictures of these pricks who can I call? Would it be an SRD thing? Is there anyone that will charge these guys with destroying fish habitat or something? I beginning to understand why some of the members here get so upset about random camping.

I think this is the issue that people who come from a more densely populated and older city have trouble adjusting to. 10 years or so ago the 17th ave SW had a chance to become this but the red mile thing and super heated economy ruined it. As an example the cool little coffee shop I liked had their rent double, then the book store closed for the same reason and so on, now it's mostly sports bars all the way down the street. This city would really benefit from something like Montreal's Old Port or Plataea areas where small unique businesses could thrive. Having said that, I'm happy here and adjusting to my suburb lifestyle.

That's still a pretty decent processor for your average home user type situation, dual core with net burst. Add 8 GB of RAM and it should be pretty decent for browsing around and light gaming depending on the video configuration. Faster than the laptop I use most of the time. Something is wrong if it's that slow.

The "nice" part about buying a Dell is that you get to talk to "Bob" in Mumbai when it breaks. By "nice" I mean annoying and useless.

That's actually a lucky turn, a few years ago my girlfriend's car got broken into via a smashed window and her gym bag stolen. The sweaty clothes were no loss compared to the couple of hundred it cost to get a new window installed. Since then I have stopped locking my doors, there's nothing I leave in there that is more valuable than the window, I just hope the bastards try it first.

I agree, I'm not impressed with what CTV is doing at all. Say whatever you might about the CBC but their sports coverage was always top notch.

Anyone else watch the moguls tonight? This is my favorite Olympic discipline by far and It was great to watch Bilodeau beat the a-hole to take Canada's first gold at home. It was like shakespeare or something. For those that don't know what I mean by a-hole... Dale Begg-Smith, the Australian who took the silver medal, actually grew up in Canada and was a member of the national freestyle team when he was younger. He left the team and Canada because his coaches didn't allow him enough time to pursue his business interests as well as his training. It sounds like a pretty dumb move on the part of the Canadian team until you find out that his "business" is actually distributing computer malware that causes those awful pop up ads you can't get rid of. Ever have your 8 year old get bombarded with porn ads while trying to use your computer? Blame him. Having spent my entire adult life in IT and much of that time cleaning up this kind of garbage, I can honestly say I'd crawl over broken glass just to kick this guy in the nuts. No doubt the guy is a fantastically talented skier but anyone who saw the end of the race could tell he is a jerk by the way he was pouting after the race. To have Bilodeau win by defeating him was sublime.

You do know who the two retailers that decided to try and eliminate Alberta Oil from their operations are don't you? It's Whole Foods and Bed, Bath and Beyond. Their business models are built on clueless idiots clamoring after organic granola and $300 quilts. Seeing as though it is chic among such idiots to feign concern over environmental issues it makes sense for these companies to do whatever they can to look like they are leaders on the issue. How exactly BB&B is going to get all those crappy curtains from sweatshop to store shelves isn't relevant, it's an appearance thing. You can't really consider these 2 companies to be the feeling of the entire country on the matter though and it's kind of silly to try. Additionally I'd say that your criticism of Obama's stand on the issue off the mark. They used the word "meritocracy" to describe the policies they want to put together. As far as the Oil Sands is concerned the only thing it really has going for it is that it's there. Otherwise it's complicated, expensive and requires a lot of emissions to get at it, little merit to be found IMO. Should someone come up with an energy source that has more "merits" like lower emissions then the Oils Sands is out of the picture. I find this disappointing because if you really consider the situation this magic "lower emission to obtain" energy source would HAVE to be cheaper to produce, as such the market will dictate a speedy resolution to the issue. They will have to do nothing to encourage this. Given that what he's basically saying is that if somebody comes up with a cold fusion recipe or maybe a perpetual motion machine then he'll give those dirty Canadians the boot, until then it's necessary. It's not a stand against anything it is again nothing but appearances. Until Whole Foods tells their customers they can't have any Chilean Grapes because they take too much energy to transport none of this matters.

Not likely, the thing that was handicapping the previous small providers was the Canadian ownership rules so they couldn't raise capital. In the case of Wind, the industry minister decided to waive this. The company backing them is one over the biggest in the world so I don't think that's going to be an issue.

Telus, like the other wireless providers has a tendency to fall back on the "the sales rep isn't a Telus employee" excuse pretty regularly. I wonder if they haven't setup their business like this on purpose. The idea that they can supply you with a tool to monitor your usage but bill you for twice as much is laughable, can you imagine the gas company trying that? The fact is that 3G products have been oversold considering the restrictions placed on them. You can "go anywhere" and "do anything" with them buy dog help you if windows decides to do a software update when you aren't paying attention.

I saw this on the AO forum this morning and downloaded the archive. http://www.megaupload.com/?d=U44FST89 The zip archive contains a bunch of documents and some emails in text files. A quick look at the emails shows that they contain no SMTP header information, meaning they didn't come from a message store on a server because a server will always store that information. Given that and the fact that there are documents included the compromised machine was probably a desktop belonging to one of the scientists. It is possible that the email client software didn't store any header information or it was removed through some soft of export process. The problem is that while most of the message are either to or from p.jones@uea.ac.uk there are many messages that are not to, from or cc'd to that address (or even that domain) so how would they end up in the same message store? Convenient that the headers are missing, it makes them impossible to authenticate.

S.L. you need to look at how you frame some of your messages, the two of us said basically the same thing. There are some unethical people out there with places to rent. Based on what you're saying here we'd have no problem coming to an agreement, you have some pretty reasonable concerns and are asking for an equitable solution. I did not get the same impression from some of the people I talked to this week rather I felt like they were using whatever reason they could to justify raising the advertised price. It wasn't even the fact that they were trying to take advantage that surprised me, more that they were just really bad at it.

Our cat is fixed so he won't spray like that, it's not inevitable. I like to think of myself as a responsible pet owner, to be clear if a prospective land lord asked me for an deposit of some kind to cover the possibility I wouldn't have an issue. Increasing the rent regardless in just taking advantage.

The GF and I are finally going to both be living in Calgary full time so we were out looking for places to rent for the past week or so, this has been the most frustrating experience you can imagine. We were looking for a townhouse in the SW that would let us keep a cat and a fish tank. Most landlords and rental companies don't want pets in their properties, I understand that. In many listings though pets are "negotiable" which I now understand means you can have your cat if you let me screw you over. We looked at one place by Stanley Park, the minute we walked in we smelt that unmistakable stink of a male cat marking it's territory. We looked around while taking with the lady and told her we had a cat. She put on her obviously fake "gee I don't know face" and told us that she wasn't sure that was going to work. We talked back and forth as we moved through the townhouse, noticing the stained carpet from the previous olfactory cat, she stated she was uncomfortable with the cat because she had never had animals in the property before and so on. We finally arrived in the basement we she told us that if we were willing to forgo the offered $100/month rent reduction we could have the cat there. $1200 a year to cover potential cat damage? Must be a nasty cat, the really funny part? The whole "we've never allowed cats before" speech took place in eye sight of a support column that had been wrapped in old carpet and torn up by something with claws.... I must look stupid or something, maybe I need a new haircut. So we keep looking around and this scenario keeps playing itself out in roughly the same way, if you want to have a cat here you're going to have to pay more rent. A couple places I offered a larger deposit to cover any damage but was turned down, it was going to have to be higher rent. That way if the cat turns out not to be a problem they don't refund the money, nice scam. Is it a coincidence that many of these landlords also worked as real estate agents? We finally found a place where the cat isn't an issue, it's also a really nice place at a great price. Not surprisingly the owners are a nice young couple who are not in any way involved in the real estate business.

I think it's worth pointing out that Alberta was the only province that chose not to prioritize vaccine delivery for individuals that are in higher risk groups. I would really like an explanation for that from the provincial gov. I was back at work today for the first time since Oct 23 because I was sick with what is almost certainly this flu. My GF's students had several confirmed cases and we got sick at the same time, her father has since been confirmed. I never got sick enough to need the ER but it was a near thing for a couple days. So I can't say I definitely had it but there isn't much doubt. I change 0s into 1s for a living so I'm not going to to pretend I have facts to present but I'll tell you it was a unique experience for me. The symptoms were just like any old flu but much worse than usual, I don't recall ever being that disoriented and just plain sick before. I lost 14 pounds, I had entire conversations with people at work over the phone that I can't recall. I spent 9 days stuck in the house. In contrast the girlfriend was stuffed up and had a sore throat for a couple days and that was it. I guess of you get it mild you're lucky but I can surely see how this could go badly for someone that was not otherwise healthy. I would have gone for the shot but come Monday morning I was already sick.

See this is why I responded. I've read lots of things you've posted, and your write up on the Lake Sundance problem and you seem to be a reasonable educated guy so I couldn't figure out why you posted the little facts bulletin points. Each one of those points is far too complicated to summarize that quickly and to do so is intellectually dishonest. The thing that burns me about this is that there has been evidence to suggest that the changes to our climate have been accelerating for 20 years and it took all this media crap before anyone paid any attention. I don't think there is anyone who actually participated in one of those IPCC conferences that doesn't realize there are problems with climate models. The problem is that unless it is presented as a iron strong fact nobody will listen to what they have to say so I think they get caught up in a lot of junk. NASA has decades of data on the ice pack but it isn't real until Al gore makes a movie, noise. Well they have funded some really obnoxious stuff on the subject. I think most of the O&G players have moved away from that strategy in the last few years but the coal companies are stilling putting those CO2 grows trees commercials out there. That doesn't make everyone who has a problem with a climate model an Exxon shill, again with the noise. It would be a mistake to destroy the energy industries but honestly is that even on the table? I read what I can follow, I don't have a science background. I took the upswing of the dot com bubble right out of high school rather than university, it was a mistake. I pay the rent with the computer and work for an aquarium company because I like it, always wanted to be a fisheries biologist but I got a programming job when I was 18 and followed the bucks. So that's the thing, you should be better at this than I am, that's why I didn't like what you wrote. There is a reasonable middle path here and it seems to me like you are taking on the tactics (or maybe just language) of one extreme view to fight the other. Maybe I'm wrong and you think it's all garbage but I doubt it, the acceleration of the change is compelling.
