  1. *Ty every fly I use through the year. *Learn more about Chironomids and how to fish them...(hoping Brian Chan can help in a few weeks!) *Find some areas way off the beaten path to slow life down a bit. *Finally catch a "keeper" at Bullshead.....and then let him go to be caught again!
  2. Thanks for all the input....picked up a roll top from the craigslist listing that was on this thread. Broke it in today tying my first couple of flies as well! I'll post some pics this week once its a little more organized.
  3. Just finished a batch of those brownies......mmmmm....I'll sleep well tonight. Thanks for the tips....roll tops look like a good option. I'll let you know how the hunt goes.
  4. I'm in the process of getting some tying gear together and have been looking for a bench/desk to set up in my family room. It needs to close somehow as I have little kids running around the area. I'd like to stick to $400 or less ....anyone know of people locally who make anything. Any shops in Southern Alberta carry that kind of stuff? Thanks....
  5. I'm glad to chip in......looking forward to trying out the new rod. Should be great for some of those Monsters at Bullshead when spring comes.
  6. Ahaaaaa.....yep that was it....thanks for the tip!
  7. Are we going by posting time or real time.....just noticed posts are showing an hour later.
  8. No Kidding......the definition in that wood looks amazing! Nice pic.....
  9. I'll keep this thing rolling at $250 for the rod........with no need for further comments about Mr. Suzuki.....he's getting old....give him some slack....
  10. That sounds much better! I'll have to look into it a little more closely.
  11. I'll say $200.......looks like a beauty rod and for a great cause. My grandfather has had a brush with the disease and is still going strong 10 years later. Its great that you are able to raise some money for the organization......its just too bad they can't find another way to do the checkups.......I've been told by my wife to go and get it checked but haven't had the guts to buckle down and get in there. Maybe that'll be my new years resolution.......maybe......
  12. We just had a 3rd kid and found the second row bench seat a huge pain.....kids are young and are still in boosters, etc. I would highly recommend 2nd row captains chairs so you can get them into the rear seat a little easier.....but, not sure what your exact needs are.
  13. Yep.....just traded mine in on a new truck though.....your a month too late or I could have cut you a super bargain. I had an 06 Eddie Bauer. We used it to pull a 6000lb trailer.....it has tons of juice. Interior was pretty solid as well. We had a small water leak that would pop up ocassionally on the lift gate. But other than that is was a nice ride. For that kind of money I would give it a thumbs up. Definitely not easy on gas though.
  14. Ya beedhead.....there are a few monsters I've seen around the hat as well.......don't want to say exactly where as that might tip someone off as to a connection with another number on that list......maybe #4.........
  15. I spent approx. 20 days at BH this year and noticed a couple of things throughout the year. First off I never caught a fish over 20" although I had alot that were 18" +. http://flyfishcalgary.com/board/style_emot...ridinghorse.gif That would be close to 200 fish in total if my math is correct. NO WISECRACKS ABOUT MY LACK OF SIZE. Through the entire year I never kept a fish from there as I don't think that a trophy lake should be depleted.....thats not what it is there for in my opinion. The only point in which I think a fish should be kept from a trophy lake is when it is near the end of its life. I'd rather see people taking keepers than finding them floating belly up. The difficulty then lies in the fact that both dip's and trip's have been stocked in the past which would equate to different life spans and sizes for their life expectency. If the stocking would be relegated to just trips I would expect that we could use 24"+ as the size reg and there would be several more over 20" to be caught and released. I am making some assumptions there as I am not a biologist by any means. But that would be my ideal situation of the growth rates and stocking numbers could be worked out to that end result. It seemed to me that there was not a shortage of scuds as I had several episodes of cleaning them out of my boots and waders. Maybe there were less than usual as I don't have any past years at BH for a reference. Even though I am a bit of a newbie my mindset is based on leaving things the way they were before I arrived. It frustrated me to see guys running to their vehicles with "something" in the cooler. Some of the sideways glances made me believe that they were smaller is size and larger in quantity than show in the regs. I have no problem with the ocassional fish landing on someone's dinner table....however I think that if we are looking for a true trophy lake with monsters, than the regs could be tightened up and other lakes should be the choice of someone fishing for dinner. There are 2 other lakes not too far away that are known for smaller fish and more of them.....stocking could be and probably is to some degree set with a higher keeper rate. All that being said, the fishing at BH is still very good and typically produces very well compared to other lakes I have been on. Again, my frame of reference is not huge.....however after this past season I cannot wait until opening day next year!
  16. Thanks Guys! Thats an awesome list to get me started. Should keep me busy through the chilly months. I'll let you know how it goes.
  17. I am looking for some good books and possibly DVD's to help with a couple of areas. Topics in either fly casting and entomology as well as fly tying. Anyone have any that they would recommend? I have been fly fishing for about 3 years now but have just started reading more about the finer details of the sport. I feel like my basic casting is ok but would like to find a way to learning more about the different casts and styles, etc. On the entomology side I have learned a small amount by trial and error but would like to have a larger pool of information to draw from when I am on the water. Last spring I purchased ridiculous amounts of fly tying gear on ebay and would like to put some of that to used through the next few months. I bought the Orvis fly tying book and it looks like it may be helpful. However, I am stumped at just how some of the tools work. If anyone knows of weekend seminars I would be very interested as well. I"m from Medicine Hat and haven't seen very much action around here.....but would definately make the drive If there were workshops that I could get to. Thanks in advance for any advice you could pass along!
