  1. I strongly believe that to truly protect native species in many their remaining watersheds what's needed is a MUST KILL regulation. You catch a invasive or a hybrid you have to by law kill it. I can hear the howls now, " What about the people who can't tell a walleye from an bull trout?" Well, in reality that's just an enforcement issue, more COs on the ground and in all honesty a few dead natives will cause a helluva lot less impact than hordes of brookies, cuttbows, mongrelized rainbows and brown trout will. Whats the answer? I don't know... special license where you have to pass an ID test if you want to fish streams containing native sport fish???

I spent Wednesday fishing a stream that used to have cutthroat and brook trout 10-15 yrs ago. I fished 5 km up the valley and never saw a single frickin' cutt and it pisses me off immensely.

What did you catch in the stream?

  2. Those solar flares and eruption played havoc with my HF communications when I worked MACS in Europe and Combat HF comms in North America..

Neat to hear the solar noise, from the HF sets though, no human made noise could match it...

I used to work Ambulance and E911 in Wainwright AB, and in the winter I would be driving home at 0100AM and turn the lights off on my old Chevy truck, this would turn the dash and headlights off, and then I would stick my head out the window and watch the Northern lights Aurora Borealis while I drove home..

    http://news.nationalpost.com/2010/08/03/so...-across-canada/

Stargazing doesn’t get much better than this. Tonight, the northern lights are expected to make an appearance in the night sky across Canada and the northern United States, thanks to a spectacular eruption on the surface of the Sun.

Early on Sunday, the sun’s surface exploded, spewing plasma into space and directly towards Earth, the Harvard-Smithsonian Centre for Astrophysics said in a statement.

That plasma reacts with the Earth’s magnetic field, triggering geomagnetic storms known as aurorae, or the northern lights, which take the form of red and green rivers of light dancing across the sky. Usually only seen at higher altitudes in the Earth’s polar regions, a solar eruption of this magnitude triggers the display at lower latitudes.

“This eruption is directed right at us, and is expected to get here early in the day on August 4th,” said astronomer Leon Golub of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in the statement. “It’s the first major Earth-directed eruption in quite some time.”

Astrophysicists say the sun has essentially woken up since its last major eruption in 2001. The Sun goes through an 11-year cycle of calm and eruptions. This eruption is the first sign that the Sun is heading toward another period of maximum activity.

  3. I have a SPOT unit that I do not need anymore...I was using it when I was doing my pilots license. PM me if you are interested...

    Rufus28,

If that is directed towards me, I never leave home for an outdoor adventrue in the mountains or anywhere else without mine.

Do you have another means of Emergency Notification now that you have your pilots lic, that you do not need the SPOT? Heaven forbid the plane go down and or comms be lost on the plane, I think the spot would be a great "Back UP in that case.

I have no stake in or anything thing like that in SPOT. just think they are a great tool.

  4. Read this, http://flyfishcalgary.com/flyfisher_survival_kit.php , I think the important part for your adventure is the Spot information.. you can borrow one, and have the owner set it up with your info, temporarily.

I have done a lot of solo fly fishing and even hunting trips , the hunting trips are day trips but the fly fishing have been as long as a week, with only the Dog(s) to talk to.. Love it for my own reasons...

    remember this..

Failing to plan is planing to fail...

All that being said, Barnaby Ridge, is closed they are installing an sewage plant there for the ski hill, so you may want to skip it... they moved all the imaginary fish to Nicolas Sharon Lake in Lethbridge.. Rainy ridge, the lake collapsed and there is a mud hole there now..

Just stay home and fish the Toilet Bow river.

  5. I think that it's people that don't know how to drive on gravel roads. They stay in the middle because they are afraid they'll slide into the ditch and they drive too fast and don't slow down because they are stoopid.

Basically just poor drivers. What is it I once heard when I was getting the mud dug out from the chassis of my old Landcruiser? Oh yeah, 80% of 4X4's never leave pavement. Get one of those drivers on gravel and they just sh*t themselves.

I actually love the slip and sliding done on gravel roads.

But and there is always a but not at the expense on somebody else's vehicle or windshield..

I keep it fairly tame now, used to go like a bat out of hell when I drove dispatch, or on a road run..

In Cyprus we had something call "urban Surfing" after a long climb up Trudos mountain there was one long curve that was down and sharp to the right, the guys in the back would climb out on the roof of the British Land Rover and surf until the up hill side of the curve, and the LR slowed down, the trick was the driver put it into Neutral and let it glide down.. just as the road started to climb again there was a Cypriot Police station and they would just shake their heads at the CRAZY CANUKS and BRITS...

Not really about gravel but remember that this was on the wrong side of the road!!!!!

  6. For someone like me who's so accident prone...

Yeppers, superglue is the best to have... If i'm going anywhere remote, i'll have some suture tape as well, great stuff. Tree sap is good in a pinch but I also carry a styptic pencil with me for the smaller stuff when I get chewed on by a pike. Also carry some spray hand sanitizer with me, you can get them not much bigger than a pen. The stuff you pack doesn't need to be huge by any means.

That spray hand sanitizer stuff is also Alcohol so use it to start a fire if needed due to rain or poor burning materials..

One of the best pieces of survival gear I carry is my SPOT GPS tracker. It is a great piece of mind for my wife and kids, I fish a lot by myself and the old don't expect me home until let's say midnight , means I could be broke down or broken for 10 - 12 hrs before anybody gets worried..

The SPOT means near instant notification of anything going wrong.

I still of course carry a survival kit, I have 2, one for summer and one for winter!

the winter one is augmented by whiskey and the summer one by Beer <--poke--<

  7. Guys,

For a couple of reasons I voted NO.

1] As far as a game fish - they don't fight as well as rainbows + they bite when you go to release them.

2] Rather than spending money trying a cross - about the 3N going to 3NAF on existing stocks.

3] And lastly, we have an Alberta Rainbow - yup a died in the wool real Alberta Rainbow - the Athabasca rainbow that will grow to 7 lbs. + given proper conditions. How about we spend some money on a local home grown product.

And lastly, there is no evidence anywhere that suggests trout will control perch. Been tried in Phillis Lake with "0" success.

    catch ya'

    Don

    X1

And I am not trying to get on Don or TACO's good side, cause they ain't got one!

Just think native species is the better way to go, clean up our neighborhood before we bring a new type of trout!!!

we now may have splake in the Old man dam res.. That will be great, we will see them in the rivers..

Think laker and Brooky but fricking big and mean...

look out all you whussy Cutties,

  8. Be realistic about your level of training and control - have you tested this control in a real life bear or moose encounter, if not, assume your dog will ignore your commands as a precaution. I would seriously doubt a 1 year old high energy dog is under any real control, at least to a level that he would be safe in the back country off leash.

Try having your dog sit in front of a bowl of irresistable food (like hamburger or a steak), have a friend with a well trained dog park their dog within reach of that same food, waiting. walk a couple hundred metres away, allow your dog to start eating. Then stop him, and call him to you before he is finished eating, if he is unwilling to walk away on one command to "come" then don't expect him to respond to any commands in a wildlife encounter. This is a simple control test which isolates and challenges a number of instinctual urges and measures your true level of control as pack leader.

My dog has been my companion fishing for 12 years, we have shared hundreds of amazing days and adventures together just be realistic about risks, and what your doing to mitigate them to ensure you both stay out there for years to come.

    PSFG

    Have all that covered!!!!

They both my Golden Retriever and Fischer will not touch food put in front of them if I tell them not to!

Only Fischer will not chase animals in the field, he will stand still, we have had hundreds of cows, horses, and mules (have to be careful of them) come up to us.

we have had a deer come tot he tail gate of the truck and Fischer just lifted his head and then went back to sleep, he has stopped me from going further up a path on the crow because he saw a skunk, he did not want to go further until the skunk left the path. (smart dog ehh)

He has spotted and warned me of 2 wolves and stood his ground ie not advanced just barked a loud bark when we spotted a bear in a gravel pit.. the bear took off at high speed.

the weekend he got sick we startled a momma Elk and Fischer just looked at it and let it pass, then watched it until it went out of sight.

Thor in the winter is great, will not leave me, in the summer he will chase so he stays home most times, and Mother Fairweather walks him..

  9. I's very easy to dice someone on this board and hide behind the web. Mindless dicing of individual has lost us many valuable senior members of this board in the past. I have guided for years in BC and am painfully aware how hard it is to not only take care of clients fishing, operate a driftboat, watch for river hazards on the drift plus be aware of other anglers. It's not possible to be always be perfect. Whether on the bank or in a driftboat courtesy should be extended by both parties. You are not always in full control of the direction of drift. I often when a drift boat comes by and I am wading offer to let them fish my bank and sit it out. Not such a hard thing to do for a working man. Common courtesy, something that is often forgotten in out sport. Waders do not have the right of way but are only fishers on the water like all others.

Dutchie in my personal opinion is on of the top guides in the country and hosts a great many not only local but US and European clients. I would not hesitate to recommend Bow River Adventures to anyone. And that is not said lightly. His courtesy and generosity is well known. He often posts valuable fishing conditions and tips. I know the man and seeing his answer here has gained me even more respect for him. He also is one of the financial supporters of this site. Without these guides and suppliers advertising here, we would not have an on line community at all.

Perhaps though should be given to what you say before hitting that send button with a childish public rant.

    Very well said.. SD

I was fishing the crow, and a drift boat came by, don't laugh it happens, the client caught a fish just below me, nice but not great, well while the guide was retying for the client I walked down the river some, and on a nice wide bank caught a feisty bow, a nice jumper, both the client and guide commented on the fish and action as the guide pulled hard to move the drift boat out and away. Point is that not all or even many encounters are bad between walkers (for lack of a better term) and the drift boat..

  10. Hi Just wanted to let you all that this event happened, and there will be more, much more, happening in the future. Our troops deserve this and that we cant include out American Brothers in arms is great.

I do not care about personnel feelings on war, armies, or the US, this is about wounded persons, getting some healing time on the water!

PHWFFC is still in it's infancy and could use all the love and support it can get. Hint Hint, there is a donation button on the website now!!!!

I know Calgary loves it's Canadian Heroes, support if you can..

Shameless plug I know but and there is always a but, I would do it a million times over with no shame whats so ever!

  11. my dog, Buddy, is a one year old "pointer mix" - a high energy hound, i would like to bring him along fishing with me, he is well trained and enjoys being outside, also, the wife would really appreciate me taking him along, in particular on my day trips to the back country...

but how good an idea is this? my concerns are him getting bored sitting around watching me fish, or him getting bored and jumping through a hole and spooking all the fish. i would just like to get some thoughts and opinions on bringing your dog along fishing, especially from you guys who own dogs and may have some first hand knowledge, thanks guys...

First few times go without bringing your fly rod, just walk and teach he what you expect from him!

It is as simple as that, When I fish with Fischer he can slip into the water beside me to cool off and I have no idea that he has done it and he is right at my feet, until he shakes off I used to have a bear bell on him to know where he was but now it is not needed.

Even my Golden Retriever does not go in the water, but if I or anyone near catches a fish he must supervise the retrieval and lament the release.

That being said you must train yourself to know where he is at all times and what he is doing , I failed that my last trip and it almost cost Fischer his life!

Think very hard as to if this is something you can do!

  12. So why not make it mandatory that people under the age of 18 must wear one?If the water craft needs an operators license to run it then its mandatory.Nothing pisses me off more than seeing young kids, full throttle on a lake with no life jackets. While the parents are chillen with beers. How many drownings are there a year where no life jackets are worn.I have personally witnessed 3 people drown. One in a belly boat in 3 ft of water.one in a pontoon and one in a canoe. If you think you have time to swim and find a life jacket in under 20 seconds.Thats how long it takes.Thats what it took for me to open my eyes.PFD all the time.

Agreed the line is any thing that floats.

There will be whining at first but so what!

  13. Sorry to hear about your dog. How does one prevent this?

In this case it is a true mystery as to what caused it!

So only vigilance as to where he/she is, what he/she is eating, playing in, and being around, I would dear say that watch your neighbors, and what they leave around also.

I have wracked my brains and gone over every minute of the trip and can't come up with a single obvious thing that would cause it!.

I feel like I let my best friend down and IT WILL NOT HAPPEN AGAIN, That is my promise as an owner and Soldier, I will not fail!

  14. Some of you know that I fly fish with my very best Fur Friend Fischer, well last week he got deathly ill on a trip, Acute Renal Failure! How neither I nor the veterinarian, have figured that out yet.

He has said that with all this rain, and the warmer weather that some of the types of poisonous plants and bacteria and virus are at their heights, so Please be careful, I would not wish what I or Fischer just went through on my worst enemy.

He is home now due to the wonderful work and care of veterinarians and staff at the Family Pet Hospital and 24 Hr Pet Emergency Center here in Lethbridge, His kidneys will be compromised for the rest of his life, which I plan to make as comfortable and happy as possible.

This is how Fischer should be..

  15. I had a young bear do that to me a couple of years ago on the Oldman. I was inadvertently lucky in that I had a fish on the line when the bear charged ,did not have eye to eye contact. Which I found out later from a bear cop is key in avoiding a full out attack. Funny thing is, I told that story to a friend of mine and he had the same bear charge him in the same location. Which really does tell you they are creaures of habit, just like us.

That is the reason I have a digital camera now, the first time I took my wife fly fishing on the Oldman, we fished for a bout 5 hrs and she went to the Jeep to get lunch, well she saw a young bear, come out of the woods on the other side of the river and then come through the field and hit the opposite river bank then head for where I was fishing, she yelled I thought I heard something and then she yelled again, still not sure I did nothing , the third time she yelled I understood her, I thought she had the bear up with her, so there I go 9 ft 6wt and a 8in knife, up the bank , she was at the top of the bank looking at me and pointing at the bear who is now across the river from where I just was! we watched the bear pace up and down the bank and then head back to the field and woods. Funny she still will not fly fish that section of the Oldman with me?

Pm me to see if it is the same area if you want!

Ohh yes the digi camera, she wanted proof for the insurance company, when I do not come home from Fly fishing, she hopes I get pictures !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  16. If that'n came from the waters down east then that is a special fish

Nope I think he caught it in the Porcupine hills, had a cutty and a juvenile Bull in its mouth, and was humping a rainbow and a Brown at the same time!!!

Shoooooot I need to get out fishing again!!!

  17. Shh!! there's just so few surprises left with our aging society, sides it has something to do w/high water across 2 provinces, now if I could just catch a gawdamned fish it would be somewhat alright

    friggin'lakes

    PSC and the BS

I love the lakes when the rivers are being dangerous.

    Still scared of Gators though.
