  1. Seriously? You think it was a good trade for the Canucks? Let's take the overall view on this; so the Canucks, at one point essentially has TWO #1 goalies. And what did they receive for this embarrassment of riches in net, combined? They got, Bo Horvat, Jacob Markstrom, and Shawn Mattias. Ouch. Number 1 goalies are hard to come by, and all the Canucks got were 2 prospects and a 3rd line centre. Ouch indeed. The handling of the goalie situation in Vancouver was bungled so badly, it could set the Canucks back years. Now, of course, the prospects could turn out very well, mitigating the damage. But...just wow. Alot of gambling there for 2 prospects. Smitty
  2. I enjoyed it. People at the back of the theatre got royally screwed in terms of prizes being tossed into the crowd though, lol. Never thought a flyfishing movie could move me as much as "Mending the Line" did; it was just fantastic. Smitty
  3. Garry: I'm going for at least Friday and Saturday. I have a ticket for IF4 Friday night, going to the expo Saturday (Actually I'm going to the Country Pleasures seminar first). So, don't know if that works for you, but I'm leaving Edmonton tomorrow right after school. Hopefully I'll be Red Deer around 4:30pm. Mike 780-970-7886
  4. Hi guys: Well, when I go to the Flyfishing show, its no problem cause I have aunt in Okotoks. But on February 7th, I have a teacher PD day at the Commonwealth Hall and Conferene Centre just off 36 Street NE and McKnight. It starts at 8am for breakfast, and I don't want to do the commute from Okotoks to get there. So, my big questions is, does anyone in the FFC community live near that Conference Centre, and more importantly, would you be willing to put me up for one night? I don't require anything too fancy, but I do have sleep apnea and would need a plugin of course for my cpap machine. Besides that, a bed and shower would be a beautiful thing too. Anyways, you can reply here and/or pm me if you prefer. I am from Edmonton, so, you know, you'd have to put up with that too. Thanks! Smitty
  5. Sure. Me too; planning to go to the Flyfishing show anyways... Smitty
  6. Chadillac; Well that was kinda my point; I'm interested in all of them! That's why I'm looking for the all-round primer; different species, different methods, equipment, where to, etc etc. Looks like I have some good suggestions; thanks guys. Too bad Lefty's book is out of print; I've trolled several websites, looking at used copies. Naturally, a few booksellers have some in brand new condition, and they range from $100 to $200! (forget it). Cheers, Smitty
  7. Chadillac: Just came back from Huatulco; so, for the time being, I'm not going anywhere specifically. Just was interested in the subject. Smitty
  8. Hi guys: Well, like the topic title says, looking for some recommendations on books about saltwater flyfishing. My preference would be to start with an all-round, general, primer / introduction. Looking for the saltwater equivalent of Barry's "Trout Highway" book, or Jim's "Trout Stream's of AB", or Clive's very decent all-round read. But by all means, you if can think have a must-have that specifically addresses a specific topic like fishing for bonefish, or tarpon, or "where to", or flies / fly tying, I'll take those recommendations too. Anyways, you get the idea; have at 'er! Cheers in advance, Smitty
  9. What do I think? I think it's precious and excellent.
  10. What's the latest on this flyshop - was curious. Tried googling it, tried google mapping it - nothing. Does it have a website? Is it still open? Wondering, Smitty
  11. dfreeman: You in Calgary? I'm in Edmonton. I do have about 10 rod-reel combos for a flyfishing club I used to run - I'm working as a substitute teacher, so I'm not sure if I'll get the chance to run one this year. If I don't, I may be able to lend them to you. Mike aka "Smitty" Feel free to stay in touch - smitty9@gmail.com. Feel free to give me some details.
  12. ...that this province was getting crowded, or you were feeling a little suffocated. Here's a slide show about urban density in Hong Kong: [Page is in Portuguese, Chrome can translate, not like you need alot of words to describe this...]: http://www.engenhariacivil.com/densidade-urbana-hong-kong Wow, eh? Smitty
  13. Since he gave his permission, I did download and saved them. I posted them on FB yesterday, along with me rant. I also posted them on the 'other' board (Doc's). Smitty
  14. Thank-you Avid Angler. Guys, as we've repeatedly said, we must do more than bitch about it here. Strongly worded email and hand-written letter to the minister, cc'd to the minister and premier to follow. Wouldn't hurt to phone either. Anyone else? Smitty
  15. Hey expert hatch-chasers: Should of taken a pic, but I didn't. But imagine, if you will, walking along the stream banks and you see clearly dried out shucks of stoneflies. So by how much did I miss the hatch? Couple of weeks? If it helps, I was fishing the Freeman river, and by the size, they looked to be golden stones. Smittty
  16. Just thought I'd re-post this: found it on the other forum many of us belong to, but since he mentioned maybe it belongs to a guide, and it's from the Lethbridge area, I thought it just might be useful to re-post on FFC due to geography: Found: backpack you will want back Hey all, I found a loaded pack near Lethbridge. It was not around anyone or anything but I left it there until dark before grabbing it. If its yours I just want to give it back to you as it's well over $500 worth of gear. Send me a PM with some kind of a discription and ill drop it off ASAP! I went through it looking for a license or name but no such luck. This is a really personal pack with a bunch of hand tied flies so I am sure they will be looking out for it. Ill bet they launched a drift boat and left it on shore. Ask your buddies, it may even belong to a guide. Smitty
  17. I would rather have the reverse with the stream - how about no camping within 1km of a stream, 100 m by the FTR. Roads are already an eyesore, who cares if someone is camped near the road? I rather keep people away from the river. Smitty
  18. Intrigued! Looks like it has more storage, but no built in rod holder. I suppose its not too much of an effort to add the holsters for a rod holder and the fish finder?... Smitty
  19. Hey guys: So as dad and I search around for our new perfect 2-4 man boat, I thought about my own personal watercraft. Any opinions on this one (Outcast Fish Cat Scout)?: http://www.outcastboats.com/outcast/products/default.aspx?series=20 This boat will be used 99% of the time for the pothole lakes around Edmonton, so it serves a specific need; its frameless, and will fit easily into my Elantra, no need for a motor mount, no need to have it go on flowing water, and its cheaper than the Commander model. So, I really leaning towards this one, I know some guys don't like UV light and vinyl bladders, but it does come with a 5 year warranty. Just looking for feedback if anyone out there has one or knows someone who bought this model. Don't try steer me back into a frame model - already got rid of my fishcat cougar for that very reason. I just want something better than a belly boat (i.e. is rowable and I can sit up). Cheers! Smitty
  20. Been a couple of years since I visited this topic - thought I'd revive it. The reason, naturally, is that I'm looking to upgrade - again. With Airmiles I got one for "free" a couple of years ago - A Fujifilm xp20. Gotta say I really don't like it. One of the main issues, is the start up time from turning it on to taking my first shot. The second, related issue, is that it takes so long to focus to snap one picture or the lag time between taking 2 pictures. Need something that I can point and shoot - faster. Then, a bunch of nit-picky things I don't like. So my friends, what's the latest and greatest in digital point and shoots? (By the way, I'll state the obvious; it needs to be waterproof, shock proof, dust proof, etc etc) Cheers! Smitty
  21. Swan river...hmm, never fished it myself. I know its prone to flooding. Have no idea as to its condition. Depending on the highway you choose, its not terribly out of the way to fish around Swan Hills. The Freeman river is a sure bet. So is the Little Smoky river. Smitty
  22. Sean84: I find your comment a tad...odd. I have fished this province from Peace River to Cardston. I'll just say you're missing out on a pretty part of AB. Hiking and fishing through northern, tea-stained, muskeg-laden boreal forest chasing Athabascan rainbows is...unique. Anyways, the advice / offer / encouragement still stands. Smitty
