  1. The old greenys and brown rods were the ones you were told to lop the tip off..don't do it with the Gen 5 ones. There probably isn't a stiffer rod on the market then the TCX, so you'd be silly to do that
  2. The Z is a cannon with shortheads and skagits, i've got the 9143..would like to try the TCX, but didn't get a chance to on the river yet
  3. Though distance is a great indicator, i think being able to shoot line in general, having your anchor be exactly where you want it to be, and a nice loop is a better indicator. Eventually, your rod and skagit will not be able to cast any further (though you might be able to get a lot more using a different line setup), and you'll think your not getting any better. Sounds like you're enjoying yourself, and went fishing with it and had a good time...exactly what we all would want anyway!
  4. Al, The skagit was never meant to be a long distance cast, so i'd be far less worried about the distance you're getting out of it. It was meant to be able to pull up a very big fly with a very big sink tip, and get it fishing again. If you're looking for more distance, think of using a Scandi or Shorthead. These will handle type 3's with ease, and depending on fly sizes and weight, up to 15 feet of type 8. In my mind and experience, i'd rather use a shorthead when using a type 3 or 6, and a skagit for anything heavier. If you're practicing for a certain place and time of year, then find out some knowledge about what tips are average, and be able to cast consistently with these two different shooting heads, and you'll be fine.
  5. Simms has pretty awesome fingerless gloves, they have the flip over to keep you warmer when not using that hand. Sadly i don't think there is a glove on the market that offers what bare fingers does for feel. Best bet, Take your gloves off to touch a fish and get your hands wet. Dry off your hands (bring something to do this) and put the fingerless gloves back on. As soon as your hands get wet, is when they get cold fast. However, even wet gloves will keep you warmer then no gloves at all
  6. hope you guys have done the Skeena Watershed questionaire..otherwise, good luck getting drawn next year for one of the total of 100 licences... http://wlapwww.gov.bc.ca/ske/qws/feedback/
  7. One head shake from that big buck, and it could kill itself on the rocks..first thing i was taught steelheading was the 'honorable foot of water' that you give each fish. Whether it's landing or taking a photo by yourself, they're in a foot of water. Just my opinion, no harm meant from it
  8. I'd have to agree.. Other then that, those are some decent fish..not bad at all
  9. Word of advice, go through a fly-shop for guides that you know are tried and true. Any "gomer" with a nice website and a boat can pretend to be a guide..
  10. Why travel all the way to Craig...we had an unparalled dry fly season this year on the bow.. just gotta convince yourself to leave the nymph and streamer box at home next july/august/september
  11. The VPS is the same blank as the RPL with less expensive fittings and tube.
  12. Drove by Fish Tales today, boarded up window and not open...anyone know what happened
  13. Actually there is one man who is farming salmon inland in BC. Its funny that when he started he had no market and no demand for his product. Now that the wild salmon stock have been damaged from years of open-pen salmon salmon it is time to move the salmon farms inland.
  14. What devotion and skill it must take to fish egg flies ... count the eggs in the mouths of the steelhead in the video... sad really..AEG guys bitch and complain way too much for getting paid to go fish for months at a time.
  15. Islamorada, tell me you're going for some tarpon Get your big rod casting down before you head out, you need to be able to cast as far as you possibly can, lay it out flat, without watching your backcast.
  16. My buddy Joe and only his 2nd Chum Salmon, 41 by 26 inches 35 pounds Holy :$*%&:
  17. And to not take away from the original post.. Nice fish FlyGirl its awesome you get out and enjoy the sport so much!!
  18. Yea rainbows do jump as well as many other species of fish but think about how long they are out of water. Seconds at most.. Your right neither of us are biologists but we're out there taking them away from their natural environment should we not do everything we can to ensure they are as healthy as possible. And babies arn't fish, they dont spend 99.9% of their lives in water..
  19. if you were allowing the fish to put its head where it want to be would it not be in the water? In my opinion all BBB and Skeezruss are trying to get at is this, A fish holds horizontally in the water most of the time, when you pick the fish up gravity is now exerted upon on the fish at a much greater force than it was in the water. When you hold the fish vertically or semi vertically, the fish's internal organs are now not only being compressed in a unnatural manner but at a greater force. It can HURT a fish, something that your probably wont notice as they swim away as they effects aren't immediate. Im also not saying that this will occur everytime you hold a fish in any other position other than horizontal but should we not be doing everything we can to ensure that fish we catch are in the same condition when we release them as when we first hooked them?
  20. Nice avatar BBB, thats one huge Brown Trout, anyone catching a fish like that must bell one heck of a flyfisherMAN
  21. Pick up some LOON water-based head cement. Great stuff, i have been using the same container for 2 years now.
