Bow River Clean Up Competition?
theiceman2 replied to theiceman2's topic in General Chat - Fly Fishing Related
10-4 scrap the competition, jusdt clean up, BBQ and door prizes. Matt -
I think I need some clearification on this post. I am a huge advocate of C&R; but from time to time a fish makes its way to my families plate. I see no shame in this and don't see where the offence comes from to censor the postings because an angler keeps a fish and is legally within the regs. A prime example of this is the 8' sailfish I caught last month in Mexico. That specific fish was landed within the offshore regulations and did not go to waste. It was shared by my wife and I as well as a small underprivelaged village who cleaned the boat in appreciation for the meal. The nice thing of a public board such as this is to share your catch and the pics of that trophy. I believe in C&R and believe the board should be advocates of it, but not censor legally caught fish that don't go to waste because we don't like the presentation or backdrop What do you think?

The only time I have ordered online is for specilized nymphs or very realistic stones that I couldn't find locally. Check out robs realistics below, they do crazy realistic flies. http://yhst-93962238211049.stores.yahoo.net/stnypa.html

Someone sent me a personal message wondering if anyone would be interested in a few friendly competitions for a few of the door prizes? IE most accurate cast, or furthest cast? I will wait for feed back from you guys to see what you think, but you should bring your rod, NOT FOR FISHING DURRING THE CLEAN UP, but just incase we get creative for some of the sponsor prizes. Matt

Thats not a bad idea actually. Maybe I will keep a few of the sponsor prizes for a few competiotons.

Gone to Vegas for the week, thought I would update everyone on the clean up. So far we have over 35 people officially registered for the event, so it should be more like 50 when its all said and done. I just got a pretty nice pair of Simms aqua stealth waders in Sz 11 for another door prize, man are they SWEET! Also I am just sorting out a few options for the BBQ. There may be a local gentelman who ownes an acerage for down by Poliecemans flats, just waiting on confirmation we can have the BBQ there. Spulumbos are supplying the BBQ supplys, they do Chicken, beef, and pork, IF YOU ARE A VEGITARIAN please send me a memo for what you would like to throw on the grill I can pick it up for you. Also if you have any flyfishing, or even ice fishing gear for sale or trade, take a photo and print off the details, bring it with you to post on the "Board". I think we will have a "traders board" at the cleanup. Might be a good way to move some of that "not in use gear" what do you guys theink of that? ANY OTHER IDEAS? Matt

Amaizing as always! The "Warren Miller" of Fly fishing -
The only two reasons I need to have people confirmed is to plan teams and order the sausages from Spulumbos. You can let me know when ever. And I can order a few extra sausages for people with un certian schedules. Cheers Matt

This has happened to me in teh past on my Scierria large arbour reel, As this reel is a sealed disc drag unit I simply dip it in the river and strip a few lengths of line off, that usually seems to blow any dirt out of the reel with out taking th ething apart. Its easy I always try that first. Matt

Sorry my bad, I didn' t realize that there were so many pearch in those community lakes

Can anyone shead some light on how to use a stream thermometer to determine peak hatch times? I have heard of many guys using them but I don't really understand the temp cut offs?
-
Why don't you catch and release like the majority of us? I will usually have one camp side meal a year but the rest are put back.

I spent Sundy on the Highwood river with the hound dog, nice sight mfishing for browns but the bears are everywhere. I Ran into a 400lb Grizz about 40 yards away grazing on berrys. Lucky for me everytime I go to Longview I load up on fireworks. Once the bear started to come down the bank towards me I sent a roman candle up his ass! It did send him running but 10 mins later the same bear was following me down the river and wouldn't let me up the bank. Two more roman candles and I was out of there. I went back into Longview reloaded on air bombs and jurkey and went down lower to the canyon section of the river, thinking there were less berries and would not have another bear scare. Not the case. 20mins into it another BIG black bear followed me on just the other side of the river. More air bombs and away he went. After 3 solid hours of being bear free the dog went nutzo, yet another Grizz on the same side of the creek about 50yards up. MOre air bombs up his ass and I got the hell out of the Highwood. Just a note, be prepared if you go into bear country and a little can of bear spray is only tabasco sauce for his meal..you. As for the knife good luck! remember a bear has 5 knives attached to each hand. I will post pics of the bears later. Matt

A Friendly Reminder About Bears

Hey "Big Bad Brown" How was the fishing on the Highwood this Sept? Thinking of hitting it on the weekend. -
I have a 1982's 4 piece Kunnan graphite Advantage 4-5wt fly rod that I was given to me by my father. I usually fish my Fenwick graphite 6-7 wt on the Bow, but was considering using the Kunnan for smaller streams as a light action pack rod. I heard the Kunnan switched to golf shafts in the earily 90's due to a fire in their asian plant. My question for the board is does graphite age well, IE dry out, become brittle? Am I at a greater risk to break this 30 year old rod due to its age if it is still in original condition and always stored in it's case? Or am I better off just mounting it on the wall as a keep sake? Matt

Just a general update for the Bow River Clean up. The date that seems to work best for everyone is Sunday October 19, 2008. The general concept of the clean up, for anyone who has not participated before, is to walk a small stretch of the Bow River with a group and clean up some of the trash from the river banks and edges. As everyone knows a summer of rafting, fishing and general disregard can leave our beautiful river in shambles at the end of the season. This is also a good way to meet folk with similar interests and maybe even learn a tip or two or win a door prize from one of our sponsors. I am waiting to confirm the number of interested people who would like to participate in this event before releasing a detailed plan for area clean up. If you are interested in attending please send me an E-Mail to madams@twinbutteenergy.com This is very imporntant as I need to know how to design the clean up and know how much to order for the BBQ. Also if you are interesed in offering your knowledge of a particular technique it would be great to have several clinics at the BBQ that people can attend; please E-Mail me if you would be able to offer a clinic. Details: When: Sunday October 19, 2008 @ 9:30 Where: Still working on a general meeting place BBQ: Fish Creek Park @ 3:00 Current Sponsors: Cabelas and St Croix Rods
