  1. The first fly in the second photo looks like you have tied in the rabbit backwards. If you tie it in the other way i think it will give it a smoother look. As for size, you wanna match the size of baitfish that current available in the stream. Sometimes something bigger will entice a chow session.

  2. Hey all,

Wondering if anyone has worked at any fishing lodges in the Queen Charlotte region of B.C.

I've currently applied to work on the deck crew at a few lodges... Has anyone experienced this type of work? I am wondering what a typical day would include... so far my knowledge is that I will be cleaning and fueling boats, arranging and setting up gear, cleaning and packing fish, general upkeep around the lodge, and.....?

If I don't hear back from the lodges, then it's back to the good ol' tree planting for me.

    Any input is appreciated

  3. I hate to say it, but I have to disagree about the service at Fishtales.

I am a newbie flyfisherman, do not live in Calgary, and I only get there a couple of times a year.

Last summer I was in Calgary for one day, and went into Fishtales to pick up a dozen or so flies and find out a little about the Bow River.

Feeling a little overwhelmed by the trays of flies laid out before me, I asked the guy behind the counter (who appeared irritated by being torn away from his magazine), "wow! How does a person choose from all these flies??"

His response was, "pretty much any one of those is working right now." (back to the magazine.)

Me: "so where would you send a newbie who is just in town for the day and has a few hours to fish?"

Him: "just go anywhere on the river and you should do fine."

    "Really? Anywhere?"

"Yup. That'll be $24 for the flies." (Back to the magazine)

So I went down to the dog park at the end of Southland, walked to the river, and got yelled at by a dog owner for fishing where there could be dogs swimming.

I don't want to know his secret spots, but he at least could have lied to me and given me directions to some place under some bridge somewhere, so I would leave the store with a good taste.

I like to test a store for their customer service with a small purchase. When it comes time for a larger purchase, Fishtales will not be an option for me. :derby racer:

    Really? Fish Tales?

I find this a little hard to believe as i've only received the most helpful and polite information when frequenting Fish Tales. As a beginner not all that long ago... Fish tales would listen to my uneducated and silly question, answer with more than adequate information, and send me in the right direction(s). That is a hell of a lot more than other store closer in to down town have done for me... The people working at Fish Tales seem like they actually want to be working in a fly shop. They are glad to shoot the *hit with you, show you a few knots, or tie up a pattern you've been having trouble with. I have never left the store with a bad "taste." I'd recommend giving them another shot.

  4. 4 years this august............................herniated disc..........L4L5.

Did physio, chiro, decompression, bought inversion table nothing worked to get rid of sciatica and low back pain.

I see a surgeon on thursday and am pleading for the surgery to remove the disc as I know what you go through and it is not fun!!!!!!

Just recently turned 40 and teach Phys.ed (yikes)........................need some closure on this soon!!!!!!!!!!!!

Exact same for me.. i've been putting it off for two months and finally went for a physio appt. The biggest piece of advice the lady gave me was to try and not sit for extended periods of time... Pretty difficult thing to accomplish being a student. The pain is bearable in the day, but i haven't slept a full night in a month easy. I walk like a 50 year old guy with a mean case of the gout... I can't wait to get old....

  5. I had a pair of Kaenons and they fell of my hat tree planting. There were definitely the best pair of sunnies i'veowned, the polarization on em was epic, even in low light conditions. Go check them out at Fish tales... they've got a bunch o' sizes and styles. Really, you cant go wrong. I think another big deal with fishing sunnies is scratch resistance. If you don't lose em too too often, you better off spending some cash.

  6. I've tried the winter swingin thing when I get super tried of nymphing, as previously mentioned... its not really productive. I would think that if you were streamer fishing with bait fish type patterns they would be a little larger, to imitate the fry the have grown a bit since their hatch ? When it's cold, I find nymphing generally easier because your line is moving through the guides more frequently and doesn't have as much time to freeze up between casts.

  7. Just picked up BFGs Km2's, they are the ten ply model for my tacoma, and i dig em. little noisy at 110km+ though...

Hey slingshotz, how do you figure a ten ply tire would ruin your suspension? I could see if the tire was much to large or causing rubbing, but i don't think the stiffness of the tread would have anything to do with it. Not picking a battle, just curious
