Under Floor Heating
Roast replied to DonAndersen's topic in General Chat - Not Fishing Related (NFR)
Our master bathroom has it, and its awesome. We have the electric pad type by nuheat. I know that you can order custom pads for odd shapes if needed. Ours is also on a thermostat/timer that comes on before we get up in the morning, shuts off while at work then starts again before we go to bed. Its pretty slick. You can tell a huge difference in temp from the places with the pad to the few small places that don't have it. I know the pad is very slim, so it won't change your floor level a lot if you have some transitions:) -
When I was looking I checked out both a Dyna King Junior Trekker and Renzetti traveller and a norvise. In the end I went with a Norvise. I had been eyeing up the norvise at fishtales but after seeing Norm at the Fly Fishing Show, I was sold. I am really happy with my decision. It didn't take me long to get use to it, and I love it. I viewed it as something I would have for life. I tie everything using the standard inline jaws. The midge jaws may be nice, however I currently don't feel the need to go out and buy the conversion kit. I also love the automatic bobbin:)

You should check out the fish tales spey-o-rama posting in the sponors thread. There would be a lot of people to give you opinions and they may even let you try out a rod or two:)

When I was looking for wading boots, the rock grips were at the top of my list. I checked out Simms, however they were too wide for my foot. I wanted to get the rubber soles because I do a lot of walk and wade fishing. However, no shop had the rubber rock grips in stock. They were all on backorder and they were getting ship times around July. Maybe things have improved. I went with felt river walkers, and have been happy so far. Anyone seen them in sticky rubber patagonia's in stock in Calgary?

great counter point:) Thanks for posting the article!

Its apparently awesome. I have never cast it, however it beat out everything in this 5 wt shootout this year.

I would highly recommend getting some bike shorts. They seem expensive for what they are, however they are worth it in my opinion. You can wear them under regular shorts/pant to avoid looking like a dork. I use these

check ebay, they come up often:)

I have heard good things about Force Fins, however they are pricey.

Best 3 Or 4 Wt, Small Stream Rod
Roast replied to Fishscape's topic in General Chat - Fishing Related
Slight highjack, however I think that it applies to the original posters questions. I am interested in this as well. How does a 7'6" rod compare to an 8'6" rod. Why choose a shorter rod? Does it greatly affect the action? Is it a portability thing? I have never cast a rod that is that short, and want to know reasons why people choose short rods? For a river like stauffer/ ram/ highwood, what would be the ideal length an why? I know opinions will vary, however I am interested to hear everyones reasoning:) -
agreed:)

Maybe someone is willing to take this on:)

New Hot Water Tank Recommendations
Roast replied to monger's topic in General Chat - Not Fishing Related (NFR)
I am interested to know your opinion on tankless hot water systems. Are todays systems pretty good, or are you best to wait a few years? -
I would check out the Garmin Oregon Series. I had an Oregon 450 for a while until it was stolen from my car around Christmas. I did quite a bit of research before buying and originally was sold on the 60csx however they are no longer come with SiRF chipset which used to make them much better than most other units. They have a quad helix antenna which makes them a little more accurate than the oregon series, however the touch interface of the oregon trumps the slightly better accuracy of the 60csx in my opinion. You can also make your own custom maps using google earth that are compatible with the Oregon series. ( I had a 60csx but returned for an Oregon) I used my Oregon in the car and when hiking and fishing. My advice is to avoid getting a unit with maps pre-installed and instead trying out some of the free maps that are available from a site such as http://www.ibycus.com/ibycustopo/ I looked high and low and GPS city here in Calgary by far had the best price I found (better than amazon.com and every other tradional/online/ebay store I checked out). They also create great videos on the different units and post them on youtube. I would check them out. Good luck with your search:)

I got an email today indicating that beadworks has a groupon deal in which you get $50 worth of beads for $25. I was wondering if anyone has been to this store (I haven't). If they have brass or tungsten beads this could be a good deal. Just wondering if anyone has been to the store....

CDC Caddis: CDC Caddis Mr Strolis has some of the best videos I have found on the net:)

Norm Norlander is going to be at the fly fishing expo this weekend. I have been eyeing one of these for a long time and am hoping there may be a deal or two at the show (fingers crossed).

I love how he casually mentions he is in his backyard... complete with casting pond. Although given his job, it makes sense;)

Hey Bhurt, I really did appreciate your help:) I will head down to fish tales to try one of their kits and see how a few different heads feel. I am so inexperienced that I don't know if I will be able to tell the difference. I think that those Amundson reels are a great buy for the price. I have never had an expensive reel, however the ability to buy a couple reels for the same price, I don't think you can go wrong. Thanks everyone for your help, and sorry for the thread hijack.

I guess I should clarify and state that the gentleman who sold me the rod suggested the 420 compact scandi not the salesperson at fishtales. I will look at picking up the lighter weight head for smaller flies. Would you suggest the airflo compact scandi or the beulah elixir scandi designed for the rod? Can I use the head I have now for the larger flies instead of the compact skagit? If so what length of tip should I be using? Thanks for all your help, this is all completely new to me. It has been really fun learning, but I still have a long way to go:)

Sorry to hijack, however my questions are related to the original posters. I recently bought a used 6/7 beulah classic and have just started getting into spey. I went to fish tales and they suggested an airflow compact scandi head (420 at 32'). I am a little confused about what tips I should be using for what types of applications on the Bow. Greg/Headscan/ Others could you recommend some tips and lengths that would be good to start out with? The books and videos I have looked at so far haven't really went into much detail on the types of tips you should be using. Thanks
