  1. I don't think there is to much around varadero. But if the wife let's you take an overnighter you can go to las salinas for bones or the river for baby tarpon. I think the guys at fishtales have the contact info.
  2. One thing I've found with the three fly rig is if the fish takes the top or middle fly you sometimes floss them with the lower fly. So you may think it ate the midge on the bottom but you just snagged it when you missed it on the worm up top.
  3. Do what you can to fight these projects. They are everywhere in BC and there are no net benefits except to the offshore companies that build them. They call them a green energy solution but the volume of impacts to our waterways are huge.
  4. I like using a heavy line and moving my fly constantly. I fish fast cover water looking for the big dumb fish. Swinging flies is boring to me. I stopped fishing for wintersteelhead because I could not stand the time it took to cast swing two step and repeat through a run that I can gear fish through in a few minutes. Summer fish though swinging flies just subsurface or ontop is a different game with much more aggressive and reactive fish makes it a lot more fun.
  5. I have always liked soft hackles to fish and tie. Pretty effective sunk as caddis or as mayfly cripples or emergers greased in the film. Also swung through a pod of risers can be deadly at times. Very versitile you can tie a soft hackle to match all mayfly and caddis hatches.
  6. I,ve had some petty good days to midging trout on the surface in April. But I noticed even during some pretty heavy BWO hatches the fish seem to key in on the nymphs with only sporadic risers to be found. But I always carry a few dries because you never know.
  7. tungsten bead and a couple of wraps of lead is as heavy as mine get. Need for and more weight and split shot goes on the line. Most of my nymphs carry at least some weight unless they are meant to fish near surface or are too small to bother with. I never liked the swivel idea split shot is so easy to work with comes on and off fast. I am one that constantly adjusts my weight to suit each spot. Retying swivels everytime i want to chang my weight seem like too much trouble.
  8. Just enough to keep it on the bottom. Sometimes none sometimes a ridiculous amount.
  9. I have had and do have lots of reels. I put my vote in for Ross. They work just fine . Quality is good, service is good, very user friendly and not very pricy.
  10. kreh non slip loop. The only loop knot you will ever need. Works well in 6x and 60# .
  11. #5 for general fishing #4 or #3 for little dries #6 for steamers
  12. picked up an zxl 480 last year and it has turned out to be one of the best dry fly rods I've ever had.
  13. beads almost always. Weight is a good thing for nymphs. Faster I can get too and longer I can stay at the bottom the better.
  14. That's got to be a summer fish. A november winter fish is as shiny as you can get. That fish must have come in three months ago to be that coloured . Big one though.
  15. Every reel mentioned will do fine for trout fishing. I have used lamsons, waterworks, abels, ross', hardy's, nautilus's, system 2's and a few others I might have forgotten. Some have seen use in the tropics lots get used for salmon in the salt and they see a few steelhead every year. I honestly can say I have never seen one of my reels fail in use. For trout though I have bought a few ross evolutions and I am quite happy with their performance. But just get whatever you want they will all work.
