  1. Ok...Guess I don't get it.. Now go back to your coloring book please and let the adults talk..... Yes and no......and maybe... Yes I have caught steel on a dead drifted dry....however the "no" I can't take credit for anything other than a gong show on that occasion... Never caught steel on an intentional dead drifted dry....But for some this maybe the ultimate experience... To clear thing up about the hate towards gear guys...nothing could be further from the truth...I had buddies that used gear and made the transition to fly's....Its those guys who I learnt to steelhead from..I had them teaching me the "in's" and "out's" of steelheading and owe them alot. I don't and never will slag a gear guy at least he picks his side.....however a fly guy with a bobber has no allegiance and will quickly feel out of place on most steelhead waters. Skip semantics and just get a gear rod and centerpin like I have said before. I am targeting fresh hot fish that are willing to move 10+ feet to turn on a swung fly...That is best done with a traditional swing...END OF STORY!
  2. Thats fine and dandy for pellet feed raindows in a stocked lake....Hone away... Its not about the "best way" its about the "only way" to fish for wild steelhead... If you have'nt held a wild steelhead in your hands you just will not get it...and some that have still don't get it.
  3. Easy Kris pump the brakes..... not everyone has posted junk.... As a matter of fact there is some really good replies if you take the time to read.....This is a good opportunity to educate the uneducated. Again some good input from the peanut gallery.....
  4. My morning thoughts on this...... Steelheading is not a numbers game and NEVER should be...It is NOT suppose to be easy and that is what makes it unique. When I'm on the water its usually at least a 12 hour shift....For that 12 hours I'm casting for roughly 8 hours... I don't want to cast a bobber, split shot and other gawdly device's that have been metioned here for 8 hours with a two-handed rod and or single hander. If I wanted to fish that way I'd get a drift rod center pin reel and do it right and save my arm and shoulder. My thoughts on the swing..waking a dry and seeing that big head pop out right behind your waker and seeing it disappear could be better than sex...Maybe....
  5. Jeremie you have shown and sound intelligent enough to know you do not know jack about steelheading..Please keep up the good work..I'll see this as an oversight on your behalf. And no I have never......ever.....ever fished with trout beads....and never....ever will.......
  6. Ha!!!.... it's rig ups like this that are a joke. Just do your self a favor get a drift rod...Its much easier to cast that hardwear all day long!!!! What do you use on the gammy??? Roe..Prawn....?????? Stick to hatchery fisheries like the vedder or the Mat.
  7. I'll bite...... I am what most people would call a "traditional" steelheader....Fish with a two-handed rod and do nothing but swing dries...swing greaselined.... and swing tips. 1. "Damn right effective" to "ME" is 1-2 fish a day...I can do that swinging traditional with a dry and or tips for summer, winter and spring run steel. I do not need to "slay" 5-10 steelhead every day I'm on the water...and will even get blanked more than I'd like to admit. 2. Watching someone nymph with a two-handed rod is like watching a dog #$%& a foot-ball....Well it may be "effective" at times for the angler to get off on.... it's an absolute train wreck to watch. 3. If your going to nymph do it right..Buy a drift rod..add gooy-bobs with a pencil float and knock your self out.
  8. Ha classic!!! Comparing pellet feed rainbows to Wild steel would be like comparing a 1982 Lada to a Ferrari 458 Italia. Hijack done.
  9. If your into knob gobbl'n lobbing eggs and "slaying" fish why not just bite the bullet and join the bait casting nation and do it right buy a centerpin/drift rod that way people will not question your conflicting beliefs.
  10. How would applying philosophies take the enjoyment out of fishing....Unless enjoyment is based on fish numbers?
  11. As far as my history goes back I believe your right Doc.....I do know that if you are venturing in the switch or two-handed world your doing yourself a disservice by not test driving a Meiz.
  12. Yep the Old brownie has a very deep load compared to the newer Z-axis and TCX which are a faster action faster recovering rod. They are completly different rods. Once heard you pay for the whole rod...so you may as well use it...and you sure do with the 9140 brownie. Fun feeling the load into the cork. Test drive both sticks see which one works for you is my advice.
  13. Have the 7110Z-axis loaded up with a compact Scandi 450 .....Tried the 420 a lil' light and also tried the 480 which was a little heavy...Toss's big nasty dries all day long and if asked will toss a type 8 tip with a 'truder tied to the end of it... Which 9140 do you have the greenie or brown??? Either blank will be a world different than the Z-axis and or TCX.
  14. Because swinging is the classic way to fish for steel summer/winter....Swinging a wet or swinging a dry...It's about the swing... And acutally its easier to cover big water with a swing rather than a upstream presentation... You have a fixed amount of line and its the cast, swing, step rinse and repeat....If you wanna nymph your better off with a center pin....Plus staring at a bobber for 12 hours would cause some emotional break down I am sure.. Do enuff of that on the bow... Zzzzzzzzzzzzz
  15. The proper phrase is the "white ribbon of death"....Let the games begin
  16. Because we should all just get along... agree on everything and hug it out rather than.....Disagree on certain topics....and make people accountable for there.... 1. Actions... and 2. Dumb ass statements and posts. Which seems to happen alot....and sadly so do locked threads. Peace
  17. As PKK says works for steel...However trying to tail a fish less than 27" is damn near impossible.. The wrist of the tail is not thick enuff and the tail way to squishy to get a grip on. I usually have @ least 6LBS maxima if not 8LBS tied on that I can put the screws to the fish and skate up or down stream to me that I can grab the flyline...make my way to tippet than to fish...simply palm fish by the belly and bam...Next
  18. I know one way to get more views is to spark a "discussion".. I can appreciate the efforts to come up with the petition to ban bait on the "T" and I agree it is a step in the right direction..Lets not put perfume on a pig here and think that if this petition goes through the "T" stocks are in the clear... this is not the final solution to a "WAY" bigger problem than bait. Control what we can control and a bait ban is one measure of control to avoid repeat hook ups.The next step is the de-watering issues/fish farms/poor ocean survival ect....ect.
  19. If I choose to bootpack an hour into a run on the bow balls early and a boat/or boats come down and slowly "work" and when I say work I mean the rower is slowing the boat down to allow multi-casts through my water yes I get worked up. I really get worked up at this time of year as adult stones are coming off and if I'm working up the bank picking off fish. If I'm bobber fishing (which I rarely do) I'll just inform the boat/rower that they have a nasty habit that needs to be adjusted. If I'm swinging my spey I'll land one in the boat so they know they did wrong.. I have the leisure of choosing to bootpack or drift some and most people don't...boaters need to understand this and give walker and waders the right of way. Unfortunately some people never had to bootpack in for an hour and understand what it actually was like being a "Bank maggot"... Dutchie I disagree with the locked out thread that you say guides are not professionals...Like it or not you are a mentor to the people around you. If you can't stand the heat......
  20. Better remind your buddy "Dutchie" of that also Doc.... He just is'nt representing himself and his guide company anymore. Calling people out is not very professional. And just to add I have had my run in with the so called water walker. So this is not some childish rant or isolated incident.
  21. If more people were less concerned about the number game.... they would stress themselves out alot less. Never seen a hatch of roe before..... Suspect I never will.... Back to point I do agree with the youtube vids on Steel...hours of entertainment there.
  22. Nail knot with some knot sense....Money.. no issues or "clunking" shooting thru the guides or retrieving line
  23. SST 6 days a week and twice on Sunday.... Fished this jacket in everything the west coast can throw at you Spring and Fall...Had a German guy fishing below me with a Simms G3 in a Monsoon on the Kitty a few years ago run for cover after his started retaining water as I swung all day long..through his water after his jacket blew up on him
  24. Jack, Right on two counts but you missed the rod day booking system for NRA's.
  25. Hardly...we still pay the daily CW fees plus the non-resident non-tidal angling licence..to say we got BC steelhead on a platter is inaccurate...I am disappointed that they did not move forward with any means of tracking the usage of angling groups on the systems...with certainty that it is inevitable that there will be a user group(NRA's) that will have to be regulated on those systems.... I applaud MOE for seeing through the agenda minded working groups for allowing "all" Canadians to enjoy a CANADIAN resource...however they had there opportunity to change there ability to track user groups however could not pull the trigger on it.
