I've used them for sturgeon, pike and muskie, and steelhead. Very nice, probably very easy to make and a small one you could rig to use easily (one handed) from a float tube or such. I'm sure with some sort of spacer or handle on one end you could rig one up for trout. Without the netting and able to roll up, it would make a nice tool for backcountry/bushwacking fishing. Cheers,

I haven't read any other replies I just want to say... Yes Yes Yes, License guides! Maybe restrict numbers on waters where seen fit, but for now we should know who is making how much on our resources! It's also another great way to add value to the environment. Make all guide boats registered and plates of guide vehicles. Then officers could get an idea of who is out, and how often and with what numbers of people. Should be able to catch the un-registered guides this way, because people will want to be fishing good (often popular) waters. While were at it.... I'd still like to see an East slope stamp or a fisheries knowledge test requirment with a licence.

Hey Rick and Brian, I was not in anyway commenting on ethics of fishing... no comment on your ignorance, Rick . I have my own opinions on the subject, but I'll keep them to myself. Eitherway fishing at a barrier is wrong and illegal, and I think anglers should be educated enough to know on their own that fishing off redds is wrong.

The CNR is closed from the Falls to Hwy 3 to protect spawners and above E. Hillcrest Bridge for the same reason. I think that protects the majority of the spawners plus there are limited waders in early spring and during runoff... and hopefully those that wade see the redds to avoid them, and don't fish off them.

The Best Canadian is just fine. B&B- Anglers Ridge on the Crowsnest. The owner, Malcolm has done alot with Trout Unlimited and the Access Lease at Blairmore. I've stayed in the Goat Mtn cabins a few times. I like them, my wife LOVES them. Close to the Frank Liquor store... the best in Canada. Good walking in that area too.

For the fish... Just so everybody is aware, the rainbow are spawning in the Crowsnest right now so watch where you walk. The redds look like cleaned patched of gravel/cobble, often teardrop shaped, most of the time with a low area in front and a pile as a tail. Walk well around them. (sorry for the quick shot through my sunglasses...) I also saw rainbows rising... Alot of little black stones, thought I saw some BWO's, and a ton of worms.

There was one old buck in Leth that kept one antler into July last year. Very unusual, he hung out on the stretch of grass between 5 Ave N and Hwy 3.

A good tutorial on working with woven wire. Looks like a good pattern, just a little time consuming, but extra durable. http://www.midcurrent.com/video/clips/50n_wireweevil.aspx

I'm interested in those boots also... I need a pair of aquastealths for wet wading days that I'm not wearing my chotas. Brent do you know how they fit?? slim or wide?

Hard to beat really small streams. Taco, I know your small streams, some of those waters are amazing... the fish you can catch if you can crawl through all the hawthorne. There are a bunch of B creeks worth fishing! My first small stream: http://picasaweb.google.com/pharps/SmallSt...406843475838610

Original study found here: http://biology.plosjournals.org/perlserv/?...al.pbio.0060033 Globe and Mail Article: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/sto...PStory/National I think this sums it up: "We show a reduction in survival or abundance of Atlantic salmon, sea trout and pink, chum, and coho salmon in association with increased production of farmed salmon. In many cases, these reductions in survival or abundance are greater than 50 per cent," Another kick at wildfish... Cheers,

I think the lego men take my flies apart at night and hide my materials... I certainly never have more flies.

That's what I figured... at the same time though, people have families to feed and can't afford to fight with a company that has the ruling gov't party backing it. I know a couple of nuclear folks in Ontario that think there is no enviro effect from operating the plants (excluding waste management). Certainly heating water and putting back into the rivers wouldn't change anything... Smart people can be very stupid and narrow minded. If somebody they've been working for, for 5, 10, 20 years, tells them it's safe... they think it is, no questions asked. And if everybody else is doing it (going back to work), why shouldn't I?? Plus AECL, hates the liberals... they cut their funding: From the AECL website. Mind you, I don't know all the information... that's why I posted. I'm hoping to learn more, and end up with some sort of a middle of the road balance view for myself.
-
The CBC isn't the source of all truth... it just provides the truth from other sources. I don't think the AECL is a conservative mouthpiece, but they are using the issue to bandaid their public image. They are a company plan and simple, trying to make a profit. If an oilsand company goes to the news after being shut down for something possibly environmentally hazardous... then politicians start up the operation... who believes the oilsand company was in the right??? This is why self-regulation doesn't work, and gov't agencies need to be seperate from politicians.

Thanks for the post Weedy, I was hoping there was more info... I never looked. I was wondering why the staff at the plant didn't refuse to work under OH&S legislation (I would have refused if it was unsafe). You have to wonder though... is AECL covering their own butts and avoiding cost run up? Remember that AECL makes the profit from the isotopes... they aren't an independant third party... they run the plant that Ms. Keen shut down. *And AECL just shut down their other isotope producing research faucility... they put all their eggs in the Chalk River basket. AECL accident in 2002- http://www.energyprobe.org/energyprobe/ind...;ContentID=3993 AECL- Chalk river toxic release- http://www.energyprobe.org/energyprobe/ind...p;ContentID=271 And who advised Ms. Keen?? A bureaucrat at her level doesn't get there by mouthing off something completely unbackable (just partially). There is still more to this, and ONLY and INDEPENDANT review will resolve the issue. ... I know one thing.... I will never wade in rivers downstream from some of the reactors in Canada
-
One quick comment from me... She did the right thing in shutting it down (probably backed by the nuclear scientists on her staff). Absolutely, no issue. She was doing her job looking out for the safety. Where the product ends is not her concern... that's where the politics comes in. If the gov't felt it neccessary to over-ride her decision and start medical production again... fine, that's the governments job... balance what we need, want, can't handle, etc. a society based value... in this case the risk of an accident vs a medical shortage. Firing her for doing HER job was wrong.

Looks fixable.... Real bummer!

Nah, I'd say resources are limiting in these waterbodies... they are cold nutrient poor systems. Competition is very important... and it doesn't help when just the big fish get taken out. The system needs to be balanced to produce big fish. Without space, resources, or a population limiter you'll get a stunted population... not all the fish can grow big and survive as residents. Look at the adult size of reproducing brookies in small streams... high populations, few large fish to eat the little ones, lots of competition, resulting in a fight for all the food. Energy wasted that could be put into growth. Top that off with the cold temps and you have small adult fish. They won't outgrow their habitat... they move as number increase past the carrying capacity, or they get smaller. its all about energy.

... you have to watch out for the jetboats...

Hey folks, I wanna know what the general thought on this is... Was the former president of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission right to shut down the reactor and refuse to start it up; Or was the gov't right to force it to run?? CBC article here: http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2008/01/29/...en.html?ref=rss Personally I think the risk was too high, and I would have refused to start it. Less flak over that, than wiping out eastern Canada...
