  1. wolfie, not sure i read your correctly but are you saying the pinks in the store are farmed? my understanding is that only atlantic salmon are farmed. no pacific salmon species (is that the correct term?) are farmed in canada. although i was in a restaurant recently where they indicated organic alaskan chinook that was in fact farmed. didn't have time to really ask any questions about that fish but will if i'm ever there again.
  2. although there are other factors but the farming issue is likely the most significant one that has science behind it. open net salmon farming makes no sense at all unless of course you're one of the norwegian companies raping the resource..... there are salmon farming methods that are sustainable and don't destroy the wild stocks and ocean floor that should be utilized. that's the answer to your supply and demand point. as for what would happen if the fishery were shut down....who knows? the gov't would buy out licences and boats as they have in the past, people would find new ways to earn their living. not only don't buy farmed salmon in the grocery don't buy it in restaurants and be sure to tell the business that you are not buying their products. most consumers have no idea about farmed salmon....the destruction of the stocks and ocean or that it wouldn't be orange in colour unless the farmed fish were fed orange #243 (or whatever it is that gives them the colour). if consumers (or voters) knew about all of that they would likely start voting with their cheque books and maybe there would be change.
  3. was floating mac to jantzen's on monday when the storm hit. although there was a lot of rain it was the intensity of the thunder and lightning that was amazing. it went on for a couple or three hours with lots of lightning that appears to be quite close based on flashes and thunder. can't ever recall a thunderstorm that lasted that long.... pmds were very active later in the day when the storm finally let up.
  4. sorry to hear of the loss your bird dawg/fishing pal/dog nephew. you'll always have your memories of the great (and not so great - I'm only assuming here like most dogs there are some of these) retrieves and days in the field or on the river. although time eases pain and sorrow a new pup would reduce the mourning period.....
  5. for everyday scotch Abeelour - least expensive single malt in the stores i go to (less than both the glens - livet and fiddich). for good stuff - Oban, Balvenie Double Wood and Longmorn. aaahh for the good old days when Oban was $39.99 at the sunnyside liquor store less a 5% CJSW Friends Discount for a $37.99 everyday drinking scotch. Now Oban is $85 to $100. i think the question is not which scotch but where can you buy the cheapest single malts in town? i mostly go to the Midtown Coop Liquor store but it's not the cheapest - just best selection that is closest to me. any other stores out there you'd recommend (esp inner city stores)?
  6. if khabibulan can keep up his domination of the flames you'll be right. but i suspect it will change. been saying for a while now that if the oilers get a goaler watch out...and now they actually have one....
  7. i thought for sure you were going to say bankview or sunalta, never would have guessed tuxedo. it seems too far from the core.....
  8. as a flames fan i don't really care who coaches the oilers (could still be mact for all i care) just thought they'd be more fwd thinking than hiring a coach who's never won a cup and has had zero success in the new nhl (why make the the same mistake the flames made hiring keenan but at least he won the cup as a coach). coach of the year means nuttin'. there's got to be guys like bylsma out there who would being something new to the table instead of the same old same old. fwiw, i think renney would be a better choice as a head coach than quinn....but time will tell.....
  9. never had any type of those issues in 23 years but no doubt it's an issue. what neighbourhood are they in?
  10. uuummm his trophy case isn't exactly oveflowing either......actully less success at the pro level than quinn.....
  11. was my go to shop as closest to inner city but will miss mike and noelle as i enjoyed dealing with them. but then again he/she who has the money has the power......who are the owners? maybe the new manager will be as good as the old.....
  12. oops didn't register the $$, no idea.
  13. what has quinn won as a coach except the under 18 world title? not the right choice for the oilers imdao he's an old school guy in a new school league.
  14. surely we'd all agree that there are questionable areas in every quadrant of the city. NE and SE should not be dismissed as there are some good options in both esp in the inner city. traffic in caglary is horrendous (for various reasons - right everyone?) and i'd definitely be considering that in the decision as to where to live as they could end up with a hellish daily commute (and public transit is not exactly one of Calgary's strong suits either - this is a car city). if one of the selling features of the neighbourhood is "minutes to downtown" it usually means about 65 commuting minutes. i've lived my entire 23 years in calgary in the inner city: downtown, then NW and now Altadore in the SW (anyone on here own that aluminum drift boat i see hooked up to a pathfinder on 34th Ave at about 15th St?). i'd never move out of the inner city as that's where i work and play (city play that is) and where my friends live. but inner city can be pricey esp for new(er) homes (likely over $600K for 3 bdrm new house although maybe there are deals around right now). more for the money for farther out but then more hassle to get around...but if you don't want or need to go downtown then inner city may not be the place to be. as someone said depends on lifestyle and of course budget. if you really mean bedroom communities (okotoks, cochrane, langdon etc) be cautious as those as prices can be almost equivalent to calgary with a nasty commute and possible selling problems down the road. my 2 cents would be chose a farther out neighbourhood in calgayr rather than a bedroom community. makes sense to rent for a while and learn about the city and determine a neighbourhood that fits all their criteria to purchase a home. may be a good time to buy as things are definitely down. and get a good realtor who knows the city and the market.
  15. i've had a few dell computers and i think the warranties on dell can vary in "performance." the return to depot are not great as you have to send them in. the next day on site are better but i've found that in some cases they will require you to reconfigure your computer (reinstall windows etc) before they will come out at 2 to 4 hours of your time. the other thing i've found is that if you have the "consumer" model vs the "business" model your service will be affected. when i've had the consumer models you end up on the phone in India trying to diagnose your problem. the business models' service is actually in canada. my most recent computer i've had all sorts of problems with the cursur jumping around. had the keyboard replaced twice as well as some other issues and finally a new laptop. but the cursor issue didn't end. i gave up trying to fight it and am now used to a cursor with a mind of its own. just about time for a new laptop for me too....
  16. only saw about the last 15 mins of that game but the part i saw the reffing seemed fine. penalties called both ways. certainly nothing bad enough to throw crap on the ice. and as we said about the flames even if there are missed calls or phantom penalties they generally don't result in a win or loss. still up to the team and that night the canucks were not up to it (nor the next one).
  17. put me down for $275 on #6.
  18. it'd be cool if it were an original six final. say bruins v. hawks (not the wings pls, pls, pls). gotta go back 30 years for that to 1978 - habs v. rangers. it'll be interesting to see what happens with the canucks in the offseason. think they'll sign the sedin sisters? will the sisters really only sign with the same team or is that an unfounded rumour? not sure why the canucks would bother signing them. if they get the kind of $ that the panelists on tsn/score were suggesting (+/-$6.5mill) that'd be a lot of money for nothing. how about luongo? what do you do with him? will he sign again after next season? seems unlikely given his past comments about wanting to play on a cup contender and hedging about his plans. the canucks oughta trade him to the wings for some of their swedish talent. could work out for both teams. although i'd hate to see how good the wings would be with a great goaltender (which i think all in all luogo probably is). here's a question for the canucks fans out there. what the h-e-double hockey sticks was up with the fans littering the ice with garbage after game 5? is it me or is that a completely inane, classless thing to do?
  19. lynn nailed the issue. you can win in court but still have to collect the money. not always an easy thing to do especially if they don't have any assets (or skeletons in the closet to use as leverage). so after all the time put in on the court side you're faced with as much time trying to collect....not a pleasant situation to say the least....
  20. ouch ouch ouch. that hurt just to watch. hard to imagine what it would have been like to play in that game. the reffing was again pretty crappy. how about the hold on nystrom (on the first penalty kill i think) after he chipped it past the defenceman? could have been a breakaway. that was a terrible call on sarich. hockey is a man's game and if you're going to flop like a raggedy ann everytime sometime touches you....not that the reffing cost the game by any stretch of the imagination but that set the tone early.... time to sit the guys who are hurt and let the youngsters have a go. i don't think langkow, bourque or conroy should have been in the lineup. may as well have the young guys step in and play....at 100% healthy they're likely at least as good as the starters who are playing at 80% (or less). greentree was second in goal scoring in the ahl for qc this year (39 goals)....give him a chance.... gotta do something to shake things up....although......someone stole the flames flag off my truck antenna last night......the flames haven't won a series since i started flying that flag during the playoffs....could be just the jumpstart needed.....
  21. OK, here's my theory on the reffing. there are teams that have reputations as bullies and brawlers and the flame are one of those team. philly gets the same treatment. for years the flames did play that way and often led the league in fights (or were near the top). that gets in a referee's head over the years and you don't get the benefit of the doubt on calls. when we had but 1 or 2 guys who could score and not much else we definitely were on the edge when it came to penalties and fighting etc. but we're not that kind of team any longer....and haven't been for a few years now. that's why it's tought to swallow when we get treated as that kind of team now. same for certain players. you know the ones. chris simon was called on phantom penalties all the time when he played with the flames because of his rep. i don't believe it's b/c we're canadian....that seems a bit too much like a conspiracy.....although there was that goal in 2004 when we actually won the cup but it was taken away from us....reaching for the tinfoil hat now.....
  22. anyone hear any news about the injuries to bourque, langkow or conroy (as if but ... you never know a friend of my bro-in-law talked to regher so i'm pretty sure he's not coming back)? it'll be tough to win this series without 5 or 6 starters including our best defencemen and two of our 20 goal scorers. we need some guys to step it up big time - bertuzzi now's your chance to show us we were wrong to doubt you - or as my dtr says bertuzzi needs to pick up his socks. wouldn't hurt if cammalleri started scoring again.... go flames go!!!
  23. now now if we are true hockey fans who understand the game etc etc you cannot but at least respect the way the canucks took care of biz vs the blues. don't have to like it & it doesn't make me dislike the canucks any less but they did in fact sweep. i still don't think they'll beat a well rounded hockey club - only beat the blues by 1 goal in 3 of the games so it was hardly a crushing sweep. really hoping the flames can pull it out against the hawks as if we do in all probability it'll be flames v canucks - which will be a kick ass series. gonna be tough without 5 or 6 of our starters including our best defenceman, a top 4 defencemen and one (or maybe 2) of our 20 goal scorers.
  24. last week i attended a luncheon put on by the Save Our Salmon Marine Conservation Foundation to raise awareness and funds. they spoke about Alexandra Morton's work too. the devastation of the wild salmon stocks as a direct result of the salmon farms is on an eye-popping level. a big kick in the teeth is that not only are the farms leading to the extinction of our wild salmon over 90% are owned by Norwegian companies who pay nothing for the license to operate farms. and have already killed off the wild salmon in their own country. oh yeah it's not just the salmon stocks either. the effluent and chemicals from the farms are killing the sea floor too. Save our salmon website
  25. begrudging congrats to you canucks fans. your team is getting the job done nicely.
