Hey guys,

I have always used mono leaders and tippets with no problems, decided today to try Fluorocarbon leader and tippet. I am having a problem with the tippet breaking right at the knot. I have been using the improved clinch knot to attach my flies. The leader and tippet(both Rio) are 5x with size 12 to 16 flies.

I really like the way fluorocarbon sinks when nymphing but when I got hung up on the bottom the tippet snapped really easily. I caught a couple of small fish with no problem, but I hooked 2 larger fish, one run and a headshake and they were gone. The tippet keeps breaking at the knot. I did a search and read about less twists of the line in the knot to using water to lube knot instead of saliva.

Is there a better knot to attach the fly when using fluorocarbon or should I just stick with mono, even though I really like the way fluorocarbon works nymphing?

Thanks

I had that problem with the improved clinch knot too. I've started using a Cleave knot with alot better success or an orvis knot

my 2 cents...don't use improved clinch knots as they have a tendency to slip with fluoro...i like to use a non-slip loop knot on the flies and a regular clinch when attaching dropper flies off the bend of point flies...good luck...

I've used rio fluro routinely (e.g. weekly) for the past several years with a cliche knot/ saliva. Very few problems.

I use a plain clinch with floro. You need to pay close attention to your knots and use plenty of spit to tighten. I do not have problems.

I have got a bum batch of tippet on occasion, but I believe floro doesn't age the same as mono.

Pass the tag end of the fluro through the eye twice, then tie the improved clinch. Lots of spit, never pull it dead tight. Never a problem.
