Guest Rocknbugs Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 This is my first Leech. These pics are all of the same fly just differant background. Hook: Mustad 79580 #6 Streamer Thread: 6/0 Red Uni Tail: Claret Marabou Body: Arizona Semi Seal Burgandy with some UV Ice Dub Dun blended in behind the head just to hide the gap behind the Cone Head: Cone Head 3/16 Gold Is the tail to long or is the dubbin to short? Something does not look right.....lol Do I have enough dubbin on the body? Should the plucked dubbin be thicker/lighter? The bead may be to big but its all I have for cones at this point, anyways let me know what you think. Quote
Lawrence Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 my only suggestion would be to make the tail a little longer, just to get a little more movement in the water Quote
maxwell Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 great job dude....u need too fish it i suppose too figure out if u want teh body fatter of thinner..check the profile by getting it wet in a cup of water.......the tail need too be a little longer like LK mentioned...good work tho dude! lonefisher Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 looks sick man maybe a bit longer on the tail and maybe try some with a red glass bead and some lead on the front third of the hook for weight. the lead will hide pretty easy under the dubbing. I do some with 1 layer of lead and some with 2 I usually find the heavier ones have a nicer action and produce better. Quote
KnotLikely Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 The simi-seal leech has been very productive for me lately. I usually tie them without a tail, and a bit thicker of a body, a red wire rib, and a round red bead for the head, though I don't think the colour of the bead matters much as the red wears off quite easily and the silver underneath seams to work just as well. As far as standards go, maybe the tail should be a bit longer, and the body a bit thicker, as far as the fish are concerned, I don't think they care, and you'll have'm on the end of that thing the first time you fish it. Try blending the UV ice dub in with the burgandy body as it makes for a bit of sparkle in the body. I usually blend up a mix of burgundy, black, purple, and various ice dub colours including copper. Olive and black versions of this fly have also worked well for me in still waters. Quote
Guest Rocknbugs Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 Here is the refined version of the earlier fly, longer tail, thicker body and more hair. I like this one alot better. Quote
dryfly Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 Excellent. The marabou for the tail was the ticket. Looks good. Tried it in diff colors now. Cheers! Clive Quote
admin Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 The re-tie looks pretty sweet. If you have some read silver lined glass beads, stick one behind the cone. Quote
Tako Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 Well I was gonna suggest everything you did to the re-tie so you got it! Now play with colours. Black with some red is always killer Quote
Guest bigbadbrent Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 what part of the marabou are you using, the top of the feather? if you are using the top, try stripping the marabou off of the side of the feather, its got far more motion then the top section Quote
pokibear Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 The retie looks awesome, I agree also to stripping the fibres off the marabou quill, gives better movement. You could also add a couple strands of flourofibre in the tail. Quote
bigbowtrout Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 And another one falls Great work and I will take 12 in green, black and some in white Quote
Guest Rocknbugs Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 Thanks for the suggestions and insight, cant wait to heal up and give these a go! Quote
ladystrange Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 the 2nd one looks much better. marabou is the way to go. you can also try a chenielle body or fritz with a silver lined glass bead head. wrap under body with lead for the weight Quote
Guest Rocknbugs Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 The re-tie looks pretty sweet. If you have some read silver lined glass beads, stick one behind the cone. I like the red bead, because the size of it though I went with a smaller cone and I like the way they look, thx for the tip. Quote
Tako Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 Dang that red bead rocks that fly. The black one wants more marabou though. Don't be afraid to strap on lots of marabou. Quote
wongrs Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 i'd also experiment by shortening up the hook shank length. having a shorter shank (with beadhead and weight) with a longer marabou tail makes for some sweet action with a jigging motion. the flies displayed look dang good though already. my 2 cents. Guest Rocknbugs Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 Thanks man, yea once I get it to look right I will definitly be changing up the size. Quote
hydropsyche Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 Yum and Yummier. Love the bead idea. Quote
Guest bigbadbrent Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 last tip from me, then you'll have it. Don't have the glass bead all the way at the front, put it about 3/4 up the shank, and have some mohair covering it, It give it more of an internal glow, and i have caught more fish on ones that have the glass under the mohair, then right to the front. Fishietales Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 Great tying, you could also try putting a rib on it either round tinsel or holographic, it'll make them sparkle a bit, good for coloured water Quote
admin Posted March 1, 2008 Posted March 1, 2008 Those look uber sweet with the reds. Nice tie RnB Quote
lonefisher Posted March 1, 2008 Posted March 1, 2008 Love em they look awesome. Those flies are gonna produce for sure. Quote
