  1. Great little fly Birchy mate, try using the hook side of a piece of velcro to rough up the dubbing it works well, oh, and your first attempt ain't to bad either, and believe me i've caught fish on fleas that look a lot worse than that one.
  2. colour is just representative, you'll find fish take most colours on cheeks, they seem to see the cheeks as the trigger mechanism, and at different depths colours vary so much, what is lime green at a few feet, can look blue fifteen feet down, same goes for cloudy water, it all changes the colour of the fly, so it makes sense to have a variation of colours, we found late in the season over here fish were taking buzzers with the body made from bright blue polypropylene rope fibres, a small black head, and holographic tinsel as a wing case, we had over 40 fish in three nights with it, if I can find one I'll post it for you to see.
  3. BBB, it'll work fine anywhere, and it don't need eyes, the fish need to see it, it don't need to see the fish,
  4. Couldn't agree more with the two last comments, you sometimes find as well it pays to have them with a variation of coloured cheeks, as sometimes the colour you have on will not take fish, eg. you might have a buzzer with lime cheeks, but the fish are taking orange, so make up a range of colours as well as a range of sizes, say #10's to #16's that should suit every eventuality.
  5. nice selection of buzzers mate, they'd fish well over here to,
  6. shouldn't that read Those who are Celt's, and those who wish they were celt's I know cuileag, means fly, haven't figured the the beggining out yet, must be irish gaelic
  7. Great tying, you could also try putting a rib on it either round tinsel or holographic, it'll make them sparkle a bit, good for coloured water
  8. we only use the gaelic to confuse the sasanacs, Suas Leis a' Ghàidhlig! Up with Gaelic! "Mar sin leibh an dràsda." roughly translated means "ta ta for now" "Slàinte mhòr agad!" again roughly means "Good health to you" and is pronounced (SLAHN-tchuh VORR AH-kut!) or (slanj-a-var) in english John ( ee'yan )
  9. How aboot the Canadian national anthem in gaelic O Chanada, dùthaich nan gaisgeach còir, Crùn air do cheann de dhuilleag dhearg is òir. Bho chuan gu cuan le òran binn, Do chliù nì sinn a luaidh, Fo dhìon do sgéith tha saorsa ghrinn Nach spìon an namhaid uainn. O Chanada, dùrachd ar cridh', Sonas le sìth is maitheas Dhè d'ar tìr. Sonas le sìth is maitheas Dhè d'ar tìr "Slàinte mhòr agad!" John
  10. You'd get a shopping trolley in an Eighteen wheeler, gotta be cheaper buying one of those rather than paying a therapist get one with big crome fenders ( shiney stuff )

  12. Och laddie, g'tha wee lassie a break, she's no to na w'dinnie recognise britain, an that Scotland is tha only land w'know
  13. I seem to remember somewhere reading that the originals were made up using spun deer hair to make them float, maybe wrong though, but the ones I've used don't seem to sink either, must have a different fritz or something, but boobies are mostly banned up here in Northumberland doesn't matter what line you use, you can only use them on the reservoirs, where anything goes, and as Tupps so rightly said, I'm a traditionalist, " how do you know that my man " and would have nothing to do with such evil little blighters
  14. 'Centralize' No my dear, you need an Factory unit,
  15. Baltic, England, and Promaris, all do Self inflating life vests, that are designed for fly fishing, and very good I might add, just remember to puchase the re-arming kit just in case the un-imaginable should happen
  16. strictly speaking Scotfly is right, this is not a traditional blob, which has a wide gape hook and dense fibred fritz as the body, sometimes they have tails of marabou sometimes not, they were originally designed to be fished on a fast sinking line, and were built with no weight in them, the technique was to let them sink to the bottom, give a jerk on the line the blob would ten sink and rise as it floated above the line, the leaders were kept short so the blob would float around 2 to 3 feet from the bottom, now they weight them and fish them below a sight indicator as well, the one I put together is more like an egg fly but can be classed as a blob as well, as it floats, hope this helps clear the water somewhat
  17. main reason I started tying, many moons ago I might add, was simply about money, the cost of flies was always high, and the loss rate was even higher on the rivers, you all know the score, flies up trees, flies caught on weed in deep holes or fast moving water, so the natural course of action to keep my fishing economical was to start tying my own flies, I started with easy stuff at first, black and peacock spiders, PTN's, and GRHE's, then when I got the confidence I started tying Grey Duster's and Knotted Midges, I was never shy of asking for help when I needed it,and I always asked questions when fishing with guys who tied their own flies, my mother used to say if you don't ask you don't learn, and that shy bairns never got sweets, and I think anyone who is just starting in flytying should never be afraid to ask for help, I'm not and i've been tying a long time, but if I'm stuck for a pattern or a technique I'm not sure of, then I'll ask for help, T/L's John
  18. Sorry folks, I'll have to give it a miss, me truck don't fly, and it don't swim, though sometimes it thinks it can, so no way of getting across the pond, maybe next year, but have a good time and think about us folks over here, T/L's John
  19. they are supposed to represent a cluster of daphnia, and they do work with most types of trout and salmon, on lakes and stillwaters, I've never tried them on rivers, I'm more of a traditionalist when it comes to them, you know, " a hand grenade "
  20. like the shape of the hook, and fly looks good too
  21. This little thing might not look much but it murders fish, it's made from a little woolen button from the sewing shop in the village, and a little red utc thread, with a bit of holographic tinsel, simple but deadly
  22. Just fooling around with a PTN and thought of putting this in as a substitute and these were the product of a very boring film my better half was watching on tv, best ninety minutes I've spent in a long time
  23. Great vid mate, and a great fly, it will fish very well, especially under a strike indicator, we don't call them bloodworms this side of the pond we call them buzzers or emergers over here, our bloodworm patterns are normally dressed with a marabou tail, or made with flexi floss and beads, I'll post some patterns if you want, T/L's
  24. That'll fish very well over here, oop's I'm forgetting you're in Eire mate, I'll certainly be giving it a go
  25. might work out cheaper to buy a new one mate
