Teck71 Posted January 10, 2008 Share Posted January 10, 2008 Ok so i got a beginners tieing kit sent to me from my folks in Ontario. included is is the basic tool except a hair stacker and whipfinishing tools. and a very small supply of materials my question is a basic group of materials to start with you know the must haves thanks in advance. maxwell Posted January 10, 2008 Share Posted January 10, 2008 hey dude i would recommend.. a pheasent tail feather hares mask peacock herl gold silver and copper wire 6/0 black and camel thread size 12 and 14 nymph hooks and gold beeds brown and white goose biots small pack with half dozen brown hackle feathers for a size 12 basic book on tying learn how too tye the hares ear, pheasent tail and prince nymph.... For beginning fly tying, I would go with the basics to tie some basic flies: Dubbing - hare's ear, olive ice dub etc peacock herl pheasant tail hackles - grizzly, maybe some type of brown saddle gold and silver wire marabou (black is a good start) Chenille elk hair goose biot - brown and white Bead heads - to match hook size Hooks - variety of straight shank and nymph style (take a look at some basic fly patterns and see what the recipes are) Sizes 6 - 12 are good start for straight shank, 10 - 14 for nypmh style Just some starting points. You will find that you're materials will grow pretty fast. cheeler Posted January 10, 2008 Share Posted January 10, 2008 Don't forget the red wire and shrimp hooks! If you want an easy streamer to tie, grab a bucktail, big fly thread, krystal flash, epoxy and dumbbell eyes for some clousers, or the materials mentioned above for Woolly Buggers. Bigger flies are easier to work on while you learn the basics. Also, once you have a materials list, check out a craft store like Micheals for marabou, wire, peacock herl, cheap feathers, markers, beads, and other stuff which is much cheaper than that at fly shops. Lastly, stop by the dollar store and pick up a cheap box of toothpicks. They're invaluable for applying epoxy, head cement, holding materials down while you wrap thread, cleaning the head cement out of eyes, etc. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Lundvike Posted January 10, 2008 Share Posted January 10, 2008 I think before you go out and spend a ton of cash on material I would tie a few (dozen) flies with what came in you kit, just to make sure you enjoy it. Once you have tied up a few dozen flies, you'll have a pretty good idea if you like it or not, not everyone does. If you stick with it, you'll likely want to upgrade the vise from the one that came with your kit. It has some great vids starting with the basics and up to intermedate tying. Lots of different flies and also broken down into Heads Tails Hackle etc. I have found it very helpful. Teck71 Posted January 21, 2008 Author Share Posted January 21, 2008 Hey LS Hope the trip was good, I was thinking that but I have a previous engagment on Wednesdays that I cannot break. So hook and hackle is out, for every other Wed might be able to make a 1 a month depending on where they land. for now I'll start simple and work up. Thanks for the advice all, I have started with the 2 nymphs that I use most (other than SJW) the copper john and the Hares ear, and the third the Elk Hair Caddis. got the CJ and Hares ear going good, but the EHC still looks like my Cat up chucked a hair ball on a hook half the time.
