Hey does anyone know when the Forestry Trunk Road (Highway 734) was created around the rockey mountain house area? Or does anyone got a website that provides information on this? I found some info on wikipedia but it didnt have any exact dates as to when it was constructed.

Thanks

Dustin & MrBotangles,

The Forestry Trunk Road was constructed before my memory. I recall fishing the Livingstone 50+ years ago and it was there from Highwood Junction> the Livingstone then. I suspect that it was constructed about 194?

Of course, in some places it was reconstructed several times. The road, for the most part, originally followed the pack trails Forestry used for fire suppression. Later, as cars got bigger/faster/uglier, it was realigned to remove the steeper corners/curves.

Sorry, can't give you exact dates.

The FTR celebrated its 50 anniv about ten years ago .. I wrote an article about it. Me thinks it was the formalization of other roads that already existed. It runs from Coleman to (near) Grand Prairie. I am sure there is something within the AB gov't websites if you look hard enough. It was constructed as a means of access for fire suppression.

Here is the layout .........complete with a major error in the accommanying map re Coleman's location.

Pretty strange that here were press releases on the anniv and they don't even seem to be on the AB gov't website.
