Fish I.d

Recommended Posts

Caught this very hungry fish which I believe is a brook trout (there was black on the dorsal fin). I was informed after however that it could be a brook trout/bull trout hybrid, seeing as there are no haloes around the spots. Was wondering if this is just a pale brookie or maybe a hybrid?

Ya... hard to tell from the photos. If you're ever unsure then put it back.

With the brook bull hybrids, look for pale spots on a dark background on the dorsal like these two:

Full brooks typically have defined black spots on a lighter background on the dorsal like this guy:

Credit to SeanD and vhawk for catching these fish... I don't actually ever catch fish :)

Sorry to derail. Landed a funny trout the other day. Had markings like a tiger trout. No black anywhere. Found in upper red deer.

Wow that's pretty cool with no black.

My fish was caught in BC and looked more like the second picture RedBeard had posted (black spots were definitely not as defined). I did catch other fish which looked definitely more like a brookie but then there were others where the spots were very faint. Will take more pics next time.
