albertatrout Posted November 4, 2013 Share Posted November 4, 2013 Luckily coal tailing's are mostly inert/ non-toxic. I'm sure there are some habitat impacts but we will be waiting to hear just how serious the damage is. That mine is being reclaimed so I wonder if aging infrastructure or damage from this springs floods could be a factor, only time will tell. I was spending some time looking through the fish data from last year and I wonder if the worst part of this disaster will be the habitat change's giving the Brook Trout a chance to invade/ take over. I would imagine any and all beaver dams that used to stop them are gone now. Hopefully the data and trends are being watched closely. Smitty Posted February 20, 2015 Share Posted February 20, 2015 Funny enough, for some reason, I don't find a pile of brookies in the streams north of hwy 16. I don't think I'm concerned about the prevalence of brookies taking over as opposed to just the general overall damage done to the habitat by the spill.
