Tailing Pond Breech Into Athabasca River

Recommended Posts

Luckily coal tailing's are mostly inert/ non-toxic. I'm sure there are some habitat impacts but we will be waiting to hear just how serious the damage is. That mine is being reclaimed so I wonder if aging infrastructure or damage from this springs floods could be a factor, only time will tell. Hopefully they can figure out what failed and why, imagine if this was an oil sands settling pond that gave way....

Yeah, i fish in that region a fair bit too. I was spending some time looking through the fish data from last year and I wonder if the worst part of this disaster will be the habitat change's giving the Brook Trout a chance to invade/ take over. I would imagine any and all beaver dams that used to stop them are gone now. Hopefully the data and trends are being watched closely. I haven't heard a lot in the media lately, the big breach is BC took most of the attention.

Funny enough, for some reason, I don't find a pile of brookies in the streams north of hwy 16. I don't think I'm concerned about the prevalence of brookies taking over as opposed to just the general overall damage done to the habitat by the spill.
