I'm the furthest thing from a photographer and know NOTHING about cameras, so I need some advice please!

I have to go buy a retirement gift this weekend. My ceiling is $1,000. I know that she wants a digital SLR. Could use some suggestions on brand/model that would be most appropriate - nothing too complicated, but something really befitting the occasion.

Thanks.

You can get either a Nikon or Canon that would serve the recipient well. Both have very good starter cameras that can grow with the photographer. My personal pref is Canon as I have been using them for years.

Most manufacturers have pretty cameras these days so as to which brand becomes a personal preference.

This is what my wife and I have, and we have no complaints about it whatsoever: http://vistek.ca/store/DigitalSLRs/254757/...efs-1855mm.aspx

Excellent entry level DSLR that would last anyone for awhile I'm sure. Don't be fooled by the "entry-level" tag.. you can still do a heck of a lot of stuff with it... way more than the average person would ever do if normal use. Edit: I have the T1i camera and haven't been limited by it. I also added a 50mm f/1.8 II lens for portraits (~$100).

I would recommend the Canon t3i as well. Check out memory express, they had it on sale with a 18-55 mm lens for $680. This was by far the best price I could find last week while looking for a friend.
