Cork Repair

I have a couple grips with chunks of cork that are missing.Was looking for something to rebuild these areas.I dont think a general wood filler would stand up to the moisture.Any ideas.

You can buy cork filler....I think fish tales carrys it.

How big are the chunks? I've used Elmers Wood Filler in Honey Oak to fill irregularities in cork, allow to dry and then sand to shape. I also give all my cork a wipe with Tru-oil to seal and protect.

Would you post us a picture or two. Would help to see what to do. Like others have said - wood filler works and lasts for a while. Most rod handles are infested by wood fillers. There are several other alternatives depending on the extent of the problem.

95% of your corks (whether on a custom built or off-the rack rod) will have filler in it. The manufacturers simply use glue and cork dust to fill the irregularities/holes, which is why they often come out quickly after use. In fact, I have a new 5wt flight that has a few holes (just got it for x-mas). The best advice I've received, and which I now use, is wood filler. Much stronger and longer lasting. However, be sure to clean your cork first to ensure you're filling all the holes. A simply cleaner is 50% bleach/50% water. Scrub, rinse with water, dry overnight. Then do your filling.
