  1. Has anyone gone fishing here? Can you fly fish in any freshwater? Is there bonefish anywheres around this island? Anyone deepsea fish here?

Any stories or ideas would get great to hear...also pics if you got em.

    Sun

the hawaiin islands can be extremely dangerous places to visit due to native unrest towards non islanders. you may want to try mexico

  2. Captured from Wikipedia?

I think that is 2004 stats you are quoting...but whatever.

    http://tucsoncitizen.com/view-from-baja-ar...rate-in-mexico/

Actually the current 2009 rate is 14 in Mexico and 5 in the US. You can find that with more due dilegence. If you look at the stats from a lawlessness perspective...things are unravelling. If you just go to Cancun you may be safer than Washington DC however...it may be the crocked cops that kill you versus a thug robbing you or a drug dealer looking to change government policy.

As the article I looked at earlier does see your point of view...it is easy to forget you are in a third world country. A number of Canadians have taken to seemingly jumping off the balconies for fun and considered suicides versus murders. There is no real police to protect you in Mexico. Therefore...does that not worry anyone?

Obviously anything you read will not stop you from vacationing...but I just hope you take extra care in being street wise there.

    Cheers

    Sun

    Sun,

your stats still dont support your argument ( about how this violence is all over the country and not in isolated areas). This violence is isolated to northern border towns. It would be like warning people away from fishing in Montana because the gang violence in LA and Miami could spill over. Ive been to Mexico 20 times and never needed the Police ( cant say the same for my trips to the US) so i cant comment on your obsession with corrupt mexican police officers.I do know that for every report i read about crooked mexican police there are 10 such incidents about corrupt american cops. As for the balcony jumpers see my first post about the drunken yahoos who treat locals like whores. If you truly feel you are safer in disney world than cancun then I wont be able to convince you otherwise. best to just stay home an not take chances

  3. Are you going deep sea fishing? I heard November is the best time to be offshore chasing sails and swords?

As for stats...Mexico's murder rate is 3 times that of the US. Corruption is a huge problem with police and judges on the take. If a cop picks you up...chances are you are paying a bribe to escape problems.

In Mexico...if you have any problems your best bet is to flee back to Canada. If they can put any blame on you to say their tourist industry is safe...they will.

Otherwise...be wary of taxis unless the hotel calls for you.

2010 mexicos 3 highest murder rate cities (based on instances per 100,000 people)

    1-Ciudad (border town) 133/100,000

    2-Nuevo Laredo ( border town) 95/100,000

    3-Tijuana (border town) 38.5/100,000

Mexico City is 4th on that list at about 8 murders per year per 100,000 people. This is roughly the same as Witchita kansas . Again, 80 percent of the violence is in isolated areas of a very big country.

Check the murder rates per 100,000 in American cities and see where the real violence is. New orleans is about 65/100,000. Then theres new york, philly,st louis, detroit, washington, baltimore, newark, oakland, cinncinatti and on and on and on. This doesnt include all the other wonderful crimes americans commit against tourists and each other at rates that totally dwarf any city in mexico.I am planning on taking my family to florida next year(disney world). Thats a trip im worried about.

ps. 10th wedding anny in nov. so not gonna have time to fish ;)

  4. LOL

so you really want that started up again?

If anything...people should still go to Mexico but be extra cautious. The extreme violence they are seeing is bound to spill over. It is a war between drug dealers and the government with half the police on one side and half on the other. The army is the definer as to seemingly they have more honest guys then less honest. But I strongly doubt they have total control within the army also. When you hear of frequent mass murders with Mexicans and foreigners being targetted and no arrests likely...does that sound like a great place to visit?

We are not talking about poverty and theft and robberies in a third world country. We are talking chaos wherein any police investigating the crimes get killed on mass and the chance of arrests is nil. Judges, lawyers...murdered daily.

Can you justify vacationing in a war zone just because of the illusion of safety. This problem has been getting worse and as third world countries go...if you think there is such as thing as a global warming "tipping point"...you must surely see the escalating violence in Mexico as the prelude to all out chaos "tipping point" within Mexico. Just hope you can get out in time.

How about explain how you feel that this increasing violence makes Mexico a "better" place to visit than it was 5 or 10 years ago?

Check the stats on violent crime in mexico (yes i said stats as opposed to sky is falling opinion). There were far more mruders per capita 5-10 years ago than there were in the last few years. By your logic one should stay away from Montana because the gang violence in LA and Miami is about to spill over. This is about drugs and gangs. All the violence is in specific areas and targets specific people (last time i checked ,canucks in speedos werent on the hit list). Yes people still get victimized in tourist areas ( theft, assault, etc) but like any where else ( calgary included) if you are smart, and dont put yourself in a bad situation you will be fine ( heading to mayan riv. in November  )

    http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/tw/tw_4755.html

Travel advisories to Mexico are springing up faster than hawkers at a tourist stop.

Just watch out when heading down to go fishing. Looks like there is no end in sight and it is only a matter of time before they get desperate and start hitting tourists to scare the government into backing down.

    Sun

sigh.......................this is all border town incidents(along with a hurricane warning) in the northern and western non tourist areas.

75% of the murders in mexico are gang/drug related and dont involve tourists ( as opposed to all the collateral damage done by gang members in american cities). Its ironic a country like the states posts these warnings. Its the american appetite for illegal drugs and the american willingness to sell any/all of their various automatic weoponry to the various cartells that breeds and supports this whole problem.

Again, its not like they are shooting up cancun or mazatlan. Its more dangerous to walk downtown in Calgary than along the streets of 99% of mexico tourist towns. It seems that the tourists that get hurt at resort areas( the ones that fall off of balconies) always turn out to be totally drunken yahoos that figure any mexcian woman in a night club or on the streets after dark must be a hooker. In my experience ,if you treat the country and the people with respect you wont have any problems

  6. i just went thru this with no warranty vard sent mine express post for twenty bucks or so paid the fifty to sage for warranty sent the whole rod and case like they asked for and they got my rod back inside of two weeks so i was happy ......just print and fill out their warranty card like they ask at their website .....if its a four peice 9' rod like i have you can get a box that fits perfectly around it at the post office

Thanks very much for all the input . I will contact Sage today and let you all know how it all works out in the end ( Im hoping when I send it the guy at the other end is in a great mood and they decide to upgrade me and send a Z ). Again, really appreciate the help.

  7. Good one...Hadn't thought about that yet although I'm doing that myself with my rods I'm taking with me to Canada next week.

    Noud,

just a remider to pack all your flies in your luggage and not your carry on ( especially on the way home). A couple of horror stories about people loosing all their flies at customs ( i guess you can potentially hijack a jet with a size 18 parachute adams).

  8. decided to spend saturday on the highwood and had a tramatic experience. Standing there gearing up for a great day on the water and watched the last 8 inches of the tip of my 5 wt. XP fall off while Im lining it :curse: . Must have beena hairline fracture from the previuos outing. Has anyone dealt with Sage regarding warranty replacement. I dont believe i ever sent in the warranty card ( this has never been an issue with the other companies I have dealt with like Islander and Ross) so hopefully not an issue. Any info regarding who and how to send it to sage is much appreciated

  9. Good point Teck. If fact, in the parking lot of Southland yesterday I saw a truck that hat a pitbull sticker on it that read "punish the trainer, not the breed". I thought that pretty well summed up the truth about not just pitbulls, but all dogs.

I understand that not all pitt bull owners are skinhead gang memebers, but what kind of punishment to you dole out to the owner when a pitty mauls and kills a kid(or an adult for that matter)? Happens all the time with pits and mastiffs(2 incidents reported by CNN just last week in the states involving kids being killed). Other breeds may bite but they dont generally dont press an attack after the first bite.Pitts and mastiffs have been bred to kill, and generally once they hit red zone, the end result is usually pretty harsh. Even the best owner cant garantee that something that is parts of the dogs natural breeding is 100% under control. I believe they have been banned in one of the eastern provinces ( ontario?)

  10. lynn, were they on the dog park side or on the carburn park side? not that it matters, i have owned dogs and i have taken my dog to the southland dog park and definately would not bother fishing there. most dogs behave like little yard apes and the owners do not train their dogs to respond to commands all the time, no exceptions.

kind of an exercise in aggrevation. regardless of where you are fishing and how well intentioned the dog owner is and trying not to disturb you, you are still dealing with mother nature. water currents that change, dogs who are distracted by, well, everything, fish moving about, beavers sneaking up on to purposely scare the crap out of you, but that's another song. you just can't guarantee that a ball or a dog isnt going to make it's way into someone's pool or riffle or back eddy. .

nonetheless, many, many years ago i had a great dane german shepard X. a lovely but high strug animal. in West Vancouver there is a dog park at one end of the beach. running the length of the beach is a seawall that runs close to 30 +/- full city blocks. about 5 of those are separated for the dog park with great big signs saying "CAUTION DOG PARK, OFF LEASH AREA, USE AT YOUR OWN RISK" doesnt leave much room for misunderstandings.

at this point in time was 18, young, dumb, with a big dog that i had recently adopted and only partially trained who had been badly abused. looking back, i should not have had the dog in an off leash area until he was properly trained.

so there i am playing fetch on the big grassy field on a rainny day. there weren't that many people around so i had let the dog off the leash. the seawall was blocked from sight from the field by several bushes. so i was throwing the ball and the dog was running after the ball, took a hard left and ran into the bushes about 30ft in front of me and i hear this guy start screaming.

i think that the dog is mauling this guy so i run over, but the dog is barking. really hard to talk and bite at the same time, so at that point i imagine that the dog probably isnt eating this guy and i get over the bushes.

Rex was a big dog and kind of scary looking, i will admit that and he had a big bark to go along with it. here's this skinny middle aged runner in his 1980's slit up the side running shorts (in 1994) and head band screaming at the top of his lungs in a high pitched 8 year old girl kind of tone, flailing his arms at the dog and jumping in one spot.

i actually started laughing when i got there to see what the commotion was within 15 - 30 seconds of the whole thing starting. the guy is yelling that my dog was going to kill him (dog was just barking and had not touched the guy) and yelling at me to control my crazed animal. so i did and once the leash was on, the dog responded to my command to lie down and didnt pay much attention to the guy.

what i think happened is that the dog was startled by the sudden movement of the guy running on the otherside of the bushes and startled the guy when he popped out on to the seawall. so after the guy stopped jumping and screaming and started to give me a lecture about having a dog on a leash and learning to control my animal etc i asked him why he was screaming when it was obvious the dog was not going to eat him.

he says... I'm afraid of dogs.

huh? you do know you are in a dog park, right????

he says yes and starts to go on about it being his right to use the seawall and that dogs shouldnt be allowed off leash in that area. basically, i cut him off and said, well they are allowed, the big sign says so and told him he was an idiot and the next dog he screams at and flails his arms at may just bite him and it would be his fault. dude you're running in a dog park and you are afraid of dogs, you don't think they can't smell the fear on you, you're an idiot and have a nice day.

but i did learn a lesson about dogs and dog training that day. Rex didnt get to go back to the dog park until he was voice command and visual command trained. it took about 6 months of hard daily training with ADHD dog but we got there.

so had it been me, i probably would have given them the whatfore with the same line... dude, you're in a dog park. with dogs. and check the language at the door, there's kids around.

"going to a dog park and expecting not to be bothered by dogs is like going to a elementary school yard during recess with your pants down and expecting not to be arrested. it just aint going to happen and to expect otherwise is idiocy"

    LS,

I know we have had difference of opinions in the past but that analogy just about made me choke on my doughnut . Thx for starting my day with a good laugh.

  11. From my first post:

I throw the tennis ball across the river for the third time....dogs swim out into the middle, take their sweet time,

The first 2 times the dogs retrieved it right off the bat. The third time they decided to mess around with each other and were more tired I guess and the ball wound up going way downstream of even where I'd allow them to swim - much too far. I tried calling them back but knew they wouldn't come until they had the ball - but I did try. So...I didn't throw the ball anywhere close to where the guys were - in fact threw it upstream of where I was. Plus they were just standing in the river with their rods in the air, not unhooked and they weren't casting at the time....just seemed to be looking for risers. So, trust me when I say that it was COMPLETELY unintentional and that I went out of my way to avoid this situation - a situation that somebody else would have created had it not been me. The guys were just plain too close for it not to be a situation in my opinion.

I didnt mean to intimate it was intentional and I understand these guys really picked a bad place to look for risers but if it had been me and i saw 2 flyguys stalking risers, i would have held my dog in check or moved away. Obviously the average dog owner( see non fisherman) wouldnt have thought twice about tossing their ball right into the area these guys were in, but I thought it curiuos that you didnt go out of your way to give them some space(heck if it had been me, i would have been more interested in what they were stalking than tossing the tenny for the 50th time).

I have had the same thing happen many times on the river ( outside the offleash area) and it can get a little frustrating when the dog owners are not only oblivious to the anglers but actually seem to go out of there way to spook fish. Not much a guy can do but smile and move on when this happens.Again, the way they handled themselves was extremely immature and uncalled for( especially considering where they chose to fish).

  12. Found myself in a situation last week and before I tell you what I did/didn't do and the outcome, let me give you the facts and ask what you would have done.

At Southland offleash area with my 2 dogs. They have fenced it off to a point where there's one area on the river where it's a sanctioned offleash area for the dogs to swim. Went there on Friday morning - there were at least 20 other dogs and owners there. I believe it's the only area where there is access to the river for the dogs on the East side, but not sure. At any rate, there were alot of dogs swimming, chasing balls etc. I see 2 fisherman walking up towards where all these dogs are swimming in the middle of the river, in the back eddy and all around. They are obviously looking for risers. They're getting pretty close to all the canine action. I can hear them talking - that's how close. I kinda wonder to myself why they would pick that spot to fish - it's a big river and I can't imagine there'd be alot of rising fish with all the dogs in the water and all the commotion. I throw the tennis ball across the river for the third time....dogs swim out into the middle, take their sweet time, guy makes a cast, ball continues to go down river - you see where this is going. My dogs eventually got the ball within about 20 feet of where he cast. Keep in mind he cast after I threw the ball. He then yells "THANKS...THANKS A F**K OF A LOT....THAT'S REALLY AWESOME". Then they proceed to trek upstream. Before I tell you what I did/didn't do, what's your opinion on this - did I deserve his comment? Should he have recognized he was in an offleash area and kept walking or accepted what was inevitable - if not by my dogs then someone elses?

Obviuosly their response was way over the line ( and wasnt deserved), but my question is why did you toss the ball out into an area when you knew your dog would end up right in the area these guys were fishing? Yes they should expect this type of behavior from the average dog owner (especially in this area) but i would have thought that you, as a fellow flyfisherman, would have shown them more consideration. You knew they were stalking risers but made sure your dog disrupted them anyways.Again, i understand this area is for off leash ( i too use it) but if it was me , I would have kept my dog in check or moved 20 or 30 feet further away from them before tossing the tenny. I realize these guys picked a bad place to fish, but with all the complaints on this board about the various yahoos on the river ( jet boaters, drunken floaters, poorly guided drift boats, etc) it seems odd that as a fellow angler, you didnt give these guys a break.

  13. What I'm saying is that it is an attitude shared by those trying to compensate for whatever. It's a chip on the shoulder issue. You could drive an Echo and still have the attitude or a suped up 4x4. It's just easier to feel like you own the road when you drive something big. Most of the idiots I've met either drive something big and/or suped up. I also know some really nice guys who drive big tanks. I've also met idiots who drive wee little cars.

It's a generalization for sure but one not without merit. Guys lacking in whatever area in their lives try to compensate for it in some other way. Sometimes it happens to be big ass trucks. Sometimes it's buying a $700 fly rod, sometimes it's getting a trophy wife or wearing $300 sunglasses. Anytime you go way into some extreme it's probably because you're making up for something in some other area. You don't feel powerful; buy a big truck. You don't feel cool, buy expensive clothes. You see where I'm going here.

I wasn't meaning to dis all with big trucks, just making an editorial point.

could also just be guys compensating for having a flush bank account and no budget .Why drive/push an Echo if you can afford a decked out 4x4.

  14. count me as WGAF

Count me as WGAF that you dont GAF (man your line on pro hockey is getting old and boring).

On topic, i think tanguay will have a very good year. last time he was here Iggy lit it up ( until iron mike killed that ). Always like the effort Oli gave us. At his new salary i dont think this is a bad move either

  15. I have listed their lowest price guarantee below for reference.

I was interested in picking up 2 - Kingston 2GB SD cards for my kids cameras. I saw that Memory Express sells them for $12.95 each. Future shop charges $39.99! I called the store to see if they have any and when I asked if they price match he said no. I called the online store and she said yes so I spent 1 hour going through the setting up an account, doing the online purchase and then 40 minutes of her giving me the run around that the company may not be an approved company to price match. I was like "approved company" what does that mean... She said she gave it less than a 50% chance of her price matching it and would not be able to approve it for two day...by then I am stuck with paying for shipping and having to mail it back at my cost. Needless to say I like to put pressure downwards on merchandise but I cancelled my order with Future Shop and went to Memory Express and bought what I needed. We went to Aggie Days so it was not out of our way. That Memory Express store is real cool. Wish I was a computer geek and could use some of that stuff!

Now I know that Future Shop's Lowest Price Guarantee is a huge lie...

    Cheers.

  16. Half the fun of fishing is getting new eqiupment without the wife finding out.

Note to all single guys out there. Before you pop the question, buy any or all the fishing equipment you may or may not need.

    Your welcome.

women have the same philosophy with shoes. My wife came with about 80 pairs when we tied the knot

  17. Half the fun of fishing is getting new eqiupment without the wife finding out.

Note to all single guys out there. Before you pop the question, buy any or all the fishing equipment you may or may not need.

    Your welcome.

My biggest fear is that when I die my wife is gonna sell all my equipment for what I told her I paid for it ( i think she would have a minor stroke if she knew what it all really cost ).

ps. If i could only have 2 rods I would go with a 7 and a 4 weight. The 7 is not only good for the heavy 3 nymph rigs on the bow, its also a great rod for pike and could even be used for steel heading . While a 3 weight seems like a good idea, if you spend anytime on the crow you will appreciate having something with a little more backbone when the wind picks up while still having a rod lite enough to play on the smaller streams.IMO, ideally what a guy really needs is a 7, a 5 and a 3(what i personally have in my arsenal). Then you are set for anything in alberta.

  18. one Question what the hell is the difference between 1 truck and 15 or what ever. you still can only drive on at a time. am i a jerk because at one point I had 4 vehicles just for me (442, S10, honda intuder, Nova SS) each had it's purpose and i could only drive one at a time. this always made me wonder the argument of having too many cars is means your not ECO enough. See I wasn't eco because 3 of the 4 were big Gas guzzling monster engines. not because I had too many of them

I agree you can only drive one at a time however you need space to park the other 14. If you keep them all in your garage/driveway,then no problem. If you need to monopolize on all the public parking on the block to park your fleet then not so good (especially for your neighbors). I think the issue being debated here isnt so much about eco friendly as neighbor friendly. I recently moved to a culdesac that has limited street parking and have a neighbor that has 4 vehicles (2 kids that drive). Hes an excellent neighbor (as are all the folks in my cul desac), and recognizes he has more vehicles than the average household. He always ensures all his vehicles are either parked in his own garage/driveway or moves them out onto the main street (thereby leaving the few open public spaces in the cul de sac available for guests/visitors). After the hassle I had with the people in the last culdesac I lived in ( I moved from one cul de sac to another because I have 2 small kids and like the safety factor of the reduced traffic) I am appreciative of how far a little co-operation can go.

ps. Do you still have the nova SS? Had one as a kid and had a ton of fun with it

  19. "my husband had a work truck, a project truck, his personal truck and my truck"

Do you really believe that the city and developer planners should plan for 2 trucks per person? You seem to blame many different people for the situation, but perhaps you could work on getting it down to 1 vehicle per person?

uh oh. this isnt gonna be good

  20. Didn't some quack on Oprah predict the world would end this year?!

    P

Perhaps just another quack, but i watched an interesting special on the predictions of Nostradamus. Based on the Mayan calender he predicted 2012 would be a very very bad year globally. perhaps his prediction is starting to come to fruition a little early

  21. So what, now you are trolling for responses from me??? i wonder if either you or MV had noticed that I did not report either one of you for being disrespectful, name calling and the usage of slurs against me?

the 'i did notice' was in reference to the perfect angel and not making the connection. i did make the connection and chose not to comment on MV's comments.

i didnt take your flippant apology as sincere, which is why i didnt comment on that either.

i never said that parking beside the neighbours house, on a public road, next to city property easement access, because there is no other place to park on the street due to lack of parking caused by poor city and developer planning was mature or not. Only simply that i do not respond to raving luntics who threaten me or bully me in to being intimidated so they can get what they want. it wont happen and i made my point with her that she couldnt push me around. However, i fail to see how standing up for yourself is immature. once she backed off and stopped calling bylaw every day to messure the distance from the T intersection to my bumper and the fire department for hazardous waste spills and stopped leaving threatening notes on my windshield, my neighbour's windshield and the guy down the street's windshield is when i backed off and when i could park else where i did.

i dont see where the joke was even remotely close to being a lecture and i've even made reference to me being that girl. so back to what i said before, get know me before you judge me.

i was thanking Teck and Pipestone for standing up for me in relation to the bitch comment. so please, i dont care if you agree or dont agree with me or anyone else, you dont have to be a jerk about it. perhaps you dont comprehend or maybe you do but you responses are so poorly worded that you keep coming off like you are trying to insult me. so let's leave it at that.

The only thing i did was offer a possible explanantion as to your neighbors actions based on my own similiar experience. The only thing I called you is a perfect angel(you inferred the rest on your own) . I found it amusing that you could lecture someone on being a good neighbor and then in the same post go on to tell us all how you purposely went out of your way to piss off your own neighbor( I know, I know, she deserved all the petty behavior because she acted the same way). I was merely pointing out how funny human nature can be and had no intent to make personal attacks ( as i explained in my "flippant" apology)

After I tried to apologize , I went on to share a story in response to your dirt bike post (again hoping to let bygones be bygones). You were the one trolling for a reponse with your ending remark to me on your last post ("and yak, I did notice but chose not to acknowledge"). Again, IMO,sometimes the view from the high horse can obscure any self analysis .

If you feel the need to tell the teacher on me then have it at but perhaps before you do you should reread your own string of backhanded insults at members of this board ( "perhaps i need to dumb this down", "Im surpised it took so long for someone to clue in", etc).

ps. thx for your introspect on my wording and comprehension. As you would never insult anyone on this board ,I will take it as the constructive criticism Im sure it was meant to be .

  22. thank you my darlings  but you may only park in front of your nieghbours flowerbeds IF they are being raving lunitics  and uttering threats. only then does it become fun

and Yak, i did notice, just chose not to acknowledge

LOL, you didnt disappoint and acted exactly as expected(even though my apology was sincere and I hoped for better. c'est la vie) .

Obviously I was out of line for not agreeing with how you handled your neighbor ( going out of your way to piss her off with your second vehicle). I have seen the light and now realize that you handled it like a mature adult and have every right to lecture others on being "that guy" .
