  1. I have gone through the alberta provincial parks website and can not find anything that tells you when any of the provincial campgrounds open. I am looking for a place somewhere in and around the crowsnest where I an take my wife and kids for a weekend ( may 2-4). Have a 26 foot trailer but dont need any hookups. Just want to start camping. Anyone know when the prov .campgrounds open or have any other suggestions for that weekend ( can leave on the friday morning so first come first serve will work).

    thanks

  2. Given that there has not been one image of a 30 inch Brown or Rainbow caught in the Bow posted on this board, lots of people would be sceptical.

a 10 pound fish of either species would be over 30 inches. theres a reason there havent been any pics of either. its a once in a life time fish on the bow so cant imagine one guy who has lost countless fish in this range. Has anyone got a pic of a legitmate 8-10 lb ( 30 inch +) brown or bow from an alberta river? would love to see one

ps. not flaming. I also seem to " lose" the 10 pounders and land all the 2 pounders when telling stories around the campfire. :)

  3. Question:

Bought a set up awhile ago for bone fishing. It is the avid series saltwater line.

I am thinking about heading out pike fishing and was wondering if the saltwater line would be okay to use?

I assume it won't float as well but should work, it shouldn't hurt the line I don't think. It would be nice to not have to buy something new for only a couple of excursions this spring.

just a guess, but as salt water is much more bouyant than fresh water i suspect a saltwater floating line wouldnt have the "floatability" of a fresh water line. conversely a sinking saltwater line would have to be heavier to provide the same degree of "sinkability" as a fresh water sinking line.

  4. The" bold" statement is inaccurate. If you guys are gonna trash talk...get your facts straight!! 2004. Flames won a first round and before that nothing after '89. They lost first round in '93, and 5 straight years in the playoffs, not 6

    http://ca.sports.yahoo.com/nhl/news?slug=calgarypost

    <--poke--<

6 year period but only 5 years in the post season ( 2005 was a lockout) so technically it was 6 straight years. as far as facts go, they just slow a guy down. me and smitty dont need facts to argue oiler vs flame hockey . I dont have time to google when im in full rant <--poke--<

  5. Smitty,

you continue to ignore the fact that these young stars will not sign in edmonton so its irrelevant. Ask any player which city they would prefer to play in and its a landslide. Ask any player where they dont want to play and again its a landslide. Thats what i find so amusing is that all the oiler fans are clining to the dream of this new young dynasty even though everything in the past 10 years shows these players are gonna high tail it at the first oppourtunity.

You mentioned the 7 consecutive years of non playoff hockey. I agree that we were as incompetent then as the oiler staff is now. The differences are that the building was damn near empty and the ownershop was forced to make mass changes. They fired all the management and brought in D sutter. That started our 6 year run in the playoffs.

The oilers have sucked for the last 12 years and continue to let the guy responsible run the team . I notice you have never refuted all the botches that i have credited to KLown and co. And even though he made moves/nonmoves that made the entire organization look bad, lied to fans year after year and produced a horrible on ice prodcut on an annual basis, the fans still filled the building and Oilers ownership not only backed KLown, they promoted him. Are the Deadmonton masses loyal fans or dummies willing to take whatever scrap was thrown to them?

Definietly a good GM in a real city could turn the young oiler squad into a formidable bunch. Unfortunately that is not the case. You have a poor GM representing the only city in professional hockey that makes Siberia look good. Again, in 3 years when the oil are ready to make the jump to playoff contender, Hall and Eberle will already be packing their bags. No matter how you slice it, the oilers are simply the highest paid farm ssytem in the league.

  6. Don't make me have to tell the Flames fans about there team again. Fact is... if you don't count 2004, the Flames have not won a playoff round or been in the playoffs since 1989.

No other team in the NHL has been so under achieving in that time.

I don't know what they put in that beer at the Saddledome but it seems to brainwash the "Cloned Jersey wearers" in the seats.

Get your heads out of the sand!!

again, only the leafs and oilers have fans dumb enough to fill the building night after night when they have set the standard for incompetancy. W

We miss the playoffs one year in the last 7(last year), had a poor start to this year and made immediate changes. Since sutter was removed they have been one of the top 3 teams in the NHL ( unfortuantely too big a hole was dug early in the year). Again, its gonna be challenging next year but we will be challenging for a playoff spot again next year. As i said , in 2012, we have a ton of cap space and can buy whatever we need.

Now, lets look at the oiler philososphy. Miss the playoffs year after year, watch top UFAs pick up and leave, piss of every GM in the league with the amateurish move with Penner, amuse the whole league with the botched Hossa and Heatley negotiations. Do they fire the nimwit resposilbe? No, they promote him and allow him run the team through the Tambellini blow up doll.

Lets fast forward to 3 years from now. Hall and Eberle will be RFAs. They will want big money and will have been with a team that has never even had a sniff of a playoff game. A team that is annually booking tee times every february. They will have lived in a city with very little to offer a 23 year old millionaire . KLown will still be runnnig the show . When their agents ask them where they want to resign what do you think is gonna happen? Again, edmonton is the best farm team in the NHL. Perhaps time for the Deadmonton masses to remove their heads from wherever they may be lodged.

  7. a city and organization that young players, RFAs, and UFAs, want to come to. Ill take that bet because Im willing to bet the ranch that none of the young players you guys are dreaming will lead you to a cup will stay in Edmonton once they can sign a real contract. Partially because of the city and mainly because of the dingus running the team ( the guy who gets to pull the strings on the tambellini puppet). We miss the playoffs 2 years in a row, and we fire the GM . You guys miss the playoffs over and over, finish in the basement year after year, screw up after screw up when trying to retain or sign UFAs and you promote your guy ( while still letting him run the team). Sorry, but as long as KLown is there, the oil will always be considered Micky Mouse around the league

And the Flames have what exactly? lol

Let's talk about the truth. That's all all Canadians teams have...history. Since the last team to actually win was the Habs in '93. Canada is riding an 18 year drought. Keep them coming yak! :clapping:

That was an excellent effort of wishful conjecture, btw. Care to put your money where your mouth is? <--poke--< I bet you the Oilers win a cup sooner than the Flames, and has a better decade from 2010 to 2020 (meaning I'll even give you this season). I know - its a difficult bet to track.

Loser eats some humble pie AND provides informal guided trip to some selected fishing waters in the province AND donates money to some conservation organization or charity.

    Bring it! :)

    Smitty

P.S. I really would like the Cup back in Canada...so here it goes; holding my nose, averting my eyes, and cheering on the Canucks!

  8.

wow Smitty, im flattered but you may need to get out a little more. The flames were almost as bad as the oil are now before 2004. We then made the playoffs 5 consecutive years and had one of the top winning percentages of any team in the league over that time frame. Not many other teams made the post season 5 years in a row in that same time frame ( I think maybe only the wings and sharks).

Granted we didnt have the playoff success we hoped for, but it beat booking tee times in mid february (not mentioning any names). The last 2 years we missed the playoffs. Again, our barometer for shitty is much different than the recent edmonton standard (shitty means finishing 29th instead of 30th to the average oiler fan). No denial here. Next year will be a challenge. Again, in 2012 we have only 6 guys signed and a ton of cap space. Fortunately we live in a city where young players want to move to and play in so rebuild will happen. Right around the time eberle and Hall will have given their agents the " get me the hell out of here" speech. Keep smilin Smitty. Gonna be another long year for you next year

  9. And where has that gotten you? Both teams are out of the playoffs, and we get a good draft pick. I like the Oiler's situation a lot better. Oh, and btw, any Flames fan who wants to talk history with an Oilers fan, is going to lose. One cup ---- even Toronto has more. Terry

Thats all the leafs and oilers fans have is history. Both teams also have fans dumb enough to continue to fill the building even though they have mismanaged their teams into the ground. As bad as the flames may be next year we will still throttle the junior/ahl team that edmonton will ice(our captain will likley have more career poinst than the entire starting lineup for the next season) . The following year we have approx 35 million in freed up cap space to rebuild.

Keep stockpiling draft picks. You guys have an incredible farm system for the rest of the NHL. By the time any of the young oilers are actually real stars they will be getting the hell out of edmonton as fast as they can and Klown can continue selling the Deadmonton masses on his 30 year rebuilding process (I wonder which american team Taylor Hall and Eberle will sign with when their rookie contracts expire).

  10. That's ok Chris, you're the exception -- the passionate part I mean. I have to X2 it with Botangles regarding the non-Flames fans knowing more than Flames fans though. Terry

Of course its easier for an oiler fan to recognize poor hockey, bad trades, horrible GMing etc. We have only been dealing with it the last 2 seasons wheras oiler fans have seen it on a daily basis for the last 10 years. We just dont have as much experience with craptacular as our brethren to the north.

ps. as bad as its been the last 2 years we are 11-1 vs the oilers in that period. if were bad then...........

  11. LOL, with all the gang and drug related vioence in this city a bunch of beer drinking rednecks should be the least of our worries. This isnt Alabama and i dont ever remember seeing the local KKK headlining any alberta newspapers ( hell I didint even know we had any in this province until now). Our redneck wingnuts are just smart enough to take advantage of the tax breaks that come with incorporating.

    Taco,

Didn't know that - knew that they did have some KKK types in the mid-east. Wasn't sure of the far east.

Still, you gotta give Alberta it's due. Only place in the world the KKK is incorporated. Not something I'm terribly proud of.

    Don

  12. ok you made me look (ok i just googled it). don't you think all 4 criteria were met on the penalty so that a penalty shot should have been awarded? Following is from the nhl rule book online:

"There are four (4) specific conditions that must be met in order for the Referee to award a penalty shot for a player being fouled from behind. They are:

    (i) The infraction must have taken place in the neutral zone or attacking zone, (i.e. over the puck carrier’s own blue line);

    (ii) The infraction must have been committed from behind;

    (iii) The player in possession and control (or, in the judgment of the Referee, clearly would have obtained possession and control of the puck) must have been denied a reasonable chance to score (the fact that he got a shot off does not automatically eliminate this play from the penalty shot consideration criteria. If the foul was from behind and he was denied a “more” reasonable scoring opportunity due to the foul, then the penalty shot should be awarded);

(iv) The player in possession and control (or, in the judgment of the Referee, clearly would have obtained possession and control of the puck) must have had no opposing player between himself and the goalkeeper."

can't recall the play exactly but it seems to me that all 4 were met. which one(s) do you think weren't met? just curious as i said right at the time of the call penalty shot (even though admittedly didn't know the rules except for (iii)).

no, based on the "angle" i referred to criterium number 2 wasnt met. If a guy takes a guy down from directly behind him then its a penalty shot. Staios came at him slightly from the side (hence the good angle on the opposition player)

  13. bullshat dude, when a puck carrier cuts to the net and trips over a sliding defenceman its not tripping.

not true. check the rules. if staios had contacted the puck FIRST, and then took the legs out from the ducks player its no penalty. Unfortunately that was not the case as staios clearly dumped the player long before his stick touched the puck ( intent is immaterial). That being said, he had a good angle on the player so it should have been just a 2 minute penalty ( again check the letter of the rule regarding penalty shots).

The penalty i had a hard time with was Bourques. They were both hacking and whacking each other and the ref decides to tag just Rene. Iffy call at best ,but bourque should have known better with a one goal lead and 3 minutes to play. Add that to Nashvilles miracle comeback and things are looking a little bleak. They still have a chance but need 6 wins in their last 8 to get it done ( to bad we only have 2 games against the oilers left)

  14. Nope not a habs fan in fact I hate the NHL mainly for these type of acts which go unpunished and according to the 'experts' are just 'part of the game.' I don't want to waste any of my time watching a sport where thats just part of the game. I don't want to get into the whole fighting argument, but bottom line when your adrenaline is high and you're focused as intensely as playing a sport at this level, you know where you are and your surroundings at all times. If he hit him a second earlier he would have ended up on the bench. He waited to deliver that right on time. But talking to buds who play hockey and watch hockey they say there's millions of examples of guys getting bumped off into that post, its just unlucky the guy got hurt here. And that's my point - I dont want to watch a game where checking someone into a post happens all the time. And guys punch people from behind. Or hit people with sticks. Its a barbarian game for barbarian fans who want to see people hurt and watch what are the equivalent of drunken fights on skates. Its a circus show. Give me olympic or junior hockey any day.

soccers might be the game for you. no one ever gets hurt( except the guys throwing darts at each other in the stands). professioanl bowling is also a great game for the weak of heart.

Im so tired of non hockey fan, bleeding heart liberals voicing uneducated opinion on the best game and league ( nhl) on the planet. If you dont like it, dont watch it. Ill bet my house you have never been to a junior game and only watched the olympic games because it was on before the figure skating

  15. i'll continue to maintain that although skilled the cancucks do not have a playoff team....the sedins have been knocked around every playoff they've been in and why would this year be different....and luongo....still a lot to prove there too.....

not to say the flames are going deep in the playoffs (but they'll be there)....you'd be nuts to suggest that after all these years of futility....but their record since 12/23/10 certainly indicates they are a team to be reckoned with....second behind the canucks in points since that date i believe.....and goals are coming from all over....kipper is back in form.....let's have a flames v canucks series early and get it over with!!

I read somewhere that the last 2 time the flames and nucks met in the first round(since the conference rankings have been used), the winner of the series went on to the cup final so heres hopin. garantee it would be the most interesting first round matchup ( unless boston and the habs square off in round one)

  16. Does Chara have a reputation for being a dirty player or was this the first kind of incident for him? Just curious, as in my opinion to have been a malicious act you would have to consider the history of the player as well. For example, if the hit was done by someone who has made such plays in the past then, yeah, it would be more than likely that it was intentional and malicious. However, if the hit wad done by someone who doesn't have a "bad boy" reputation then you need to take that into consideration as well.

Either way, why do the politicians have to be getting into it? Don't they have bigger issues to worry about?

he has a clean record which was one of the reasons for no suspension. Chara is known around the league as a guy who plays it tough but plays clean.

  17. I agree the only thing wrong with the hit is where it happened. Which makes it a disgusting and violent, criminal hit. That is not an argument in itself for why it shouldn't be disciplined. You all know that serious athletes always know where they are on the playing surface, chara knew exactly where he was, timed it perfectly. You can see him waiting for the perfect moment to deliver that hit. The folks who don't see that aren't being objective. he definitely aimed for that with a specific goal in mind - player into post. Only thing he didn't want to happen was the guys face into the post, body would have been fine. Unfortunately when you take a risk at fast speeds to make a dirty play in a dangerous location, something bad could happen. So I agree, if it was anywhere else on the ice it would have been harmless - but that's the whole point. It happened where it happened, and to pretend like the guys dont know where they are in relation to the rink is a lie. Disgusting...

    Habs fan?

  18. Had the interference occurred behind the blue line we wouldn't be discussing this... This is more an issue with the where it took place than the act. At least once a game in every level of hockey a player gets beat and decides to take the body resulting in an interference call. Unfourtunatley a giant post metal post happened to be in the way resulting in a tragic injury.

The nhl has made it crystal clear to its officiating staff that upon significant injury resulting from an illegal act a 5 minute major and a game misconduct will be assessed. This allows the league to review the play and make an appropriate decision, they did! Its was fair and just!!!

Now comes the real issue...... why are these glass partitions is place anyways? To protect coaching staff from errant pucks? To segregated irate coaches/players from each other? For Pierre McGuire?

It wasn't so long ago that similar issues were discussed, resulting in a mandatory helmet rule, and arenas now built to spec that allow both boards and glass to flex. In the old Boston Gardens you would never go in the corner (Swedish or not) for fear of being killed between Ray Bourqe or one the the many Norris winning defense man that patrolled the Blue line over the years at the gardens.

I hope the league will review the need for these in nhl arenas and have them removed.

    B's cup champs 2011!

lol, the only thing ray bourque ever hit was the bottle. great dman offensively but certainly not intimidating. Agree that the only thing wrong with the chara hit was where it happened. anywhere else on the ice and its a 2 minute interference penalty and a non issue

  19. Not too worried, Canucks have a 3-1 series advantage, and the one game that Calgary did win was a weak ass goal in the shootout. I really hope the Nucks play the Flames in the first round, it will be a good confidence booster for them going into the 2nd round and a wakeup call to Flames fans that they do not have a team that can take them deep into the playoffs.

we will see on saturday night. Im fairly certain the entire vancouver team would rather see the preds or the wild in the first round. careful what you wish for Buck

  20. Well, one thing is that I won't be the "Flames hater" that cowers if I am wrong.

So I am shopping right now for a 2 course meal consisting of crow flambe and banana cream humble pie. You can (1) make me eat the latter or (2) just throw it at me.

    :)

So it looks like the Flames have muscled their way into contention; good for them I say. Sucks being a massive underachiever. Having said that, I will stick one of my earlier posts. It will be dangerous for this team to make the playoffs and get bounced in the 1st round. That would mean (1) their draft pick still sucks relatively to the top 5 (2) the weren't able to capitalize on very much extra playoff revenue and (3) a playoff run may delude management that a rebuild is unnecessary: they're an old team; they better win sooner than later.

BTW, congratulations on what looks to have been a very successful Heritage Classic! I taped the game; looks like it was a lot of fun, and unlike the Oiler's version, the home team won. The league should have a Heritage Classic every year or two years at the most. They're quite an awesome spectacle.

But please, dear God, someone tell the Flames management to incinerate those God-awful Ronald McDonald costumes posing as uniforms. I was aghast for you guys! :)

    Smitty

the flames were knocking on the playoff door when you posted this smitty. since then they have kicked that door down and are looking like a seriuos headache for whomever they draw in the first round(man I hope its the Nucks). dont want to get too carried away, but its starting to feel a little like 2004.

  21. I had to bring this thread back to the top. Canucks on top of the NHL by a whopping 7 points, have Daniel leading the scoring race, Henrik tied for second, GAA second in the league. It's nice to be a Canucks fan these days.

Yes the playoffs are a different animal, but this team has been tinkered with knowing how they do in the playoffs will determne how successful the team was, Presidents Trophy or not.

I see Calgary has been sucking less lately, but now that Morrison is hurt that might have an effect on the productivity of the top line. I'd like to see Calgary win a round or two, but not at the expense of the Canucks. Montreal, of course, will be joining Toronto, Edmonton and Ottawa on the golf couse after a quick four game post season. :):):)

the flames have been the best team in the league since xmas and the highest scoring team in the entire league since January 1st. Be very afraid canucks fans. Your team has been getting soft and are ripe for a first round upset.

  22. Ok, so as not to hijack Ladystrange's thread about Barbados, I'd like you all to rate the Caribbean Rums you've tried.

So far, I've only had two and would like to personally acquire quite a few more. Your recommendations might send me to one island before another.

    1. Puerto Rico - Barrilito Dark, smooth and neat

    2. Haiti- Barbancourt 5 star 8 year Slightly raw tasting, reminiscent of gold tequila. Better mixed.

ron legendario or santiago de cuba are excellent cuban rums. flor de cana 18 year old is another favorite. Vizcaya #21 and Diplomatico reserve (venezuelean) are also exceptional sipping rums. Brugal is average (OK for a cheaper, lower quality bottle of rum) and is only marginally better than Bacardi.

  23. Fishfreak says:

"I remember eating lunch while a guy was fishing a pool at the Liv. In half an hour, with multiple fly changes, he caught nothing. After I finished my lunch, I saw what was rising, and caught 5 in just a few minutes. That guy complained of a slow day on the Liv, while I had a great one. On one of the high mountain lakes, I caught 70+ fish in less than 2 hours, while people around me got a handful the whole day."

<--poke--< Fishfreak - If I caught 70 fish in two hours, I'd quit or lose count, how did you manage to accurately catch 70 fish in a 120 minutes. Let's see.....120 divided by 70 = 1.71 minutes per fish. That is of course if you don't take time out to pee, change fly, or otherwise! WOW!!!

I told you a thousand times to quit exaggerating!!! :ridemcowboy:

lol, ironic how a post from a guy refuting your argument proves your point to a tee. As soon as i saw "70+ fish in 2 hours" I too was thinking a shovel was needed to tell this story
