  1. Anyone had any experience with this reel? I recently cracked my Okuma SLV and need a new line holder. It's a good news/bad news thing as I really don't like the SLV. I'm really leaning towards the Pfluger Trion but wanted to hear about the Battenkill.

    Thanks.

both the Pfluger Trion and Battenkill are great reels. I have both and love em. Also love the Pfluger President.

  2. I don't normally leave my stuff in my vehicle. I like to pack up for every trip as my needs are different for equipment depending on the area I fish. Large rivers, small streams or lakes. The one time I left my stuff in my van (on a business trip to Edmonton) it was broken into. Lost waders a couple of fly boxes and a precious bamboo fly rod. Be quite a while before I can scratch up enough shekels for a replacement, even a blank. My stuff was covered with an old blanket on the floor of my van.

You're better off not leaving the stuff in. There is much less respect for people and property now. More care must be taken. Just pack up and go.

  3. Aside from practicing my casting, I think I need more of these:

Anterior, medial and posterior delt raises

    Twisting crunches

    Shrugs

    Lat-pulls

    Bent rows

    Bi-s and tri-s

Maybe a little more time on the exerbike.

    Any thoughts?

    My regiment is

    scotch pulls

    Oh hum's

    Another burger

    Quick nap

    and day dream

    gets me in shape quick.

  4. For fish in shallow water sit back and study the trout for a bit. If you actually see the fish feeding then try to figure out what they might be taking. Something to remember is shallow water fish have lots of time to study a fly and a PRESENTATION. The only occasional success I've ever had is to swim the presentation well ahead of the fish to entice a forward movement and strike. Remember a lot of these large trout are really wary and unlike in faster water where they may need to make a quick decision on what is drifting by them. Shallow water brown tends to be the cagiest ones. Make a pass if unsuccessful admire the fish and move on.

  5. So I have read that some people start tying flys with these but this my first attempt. Anyone seeing any way to improve the head portion? Should I use more hair or something other than deer hair? Any criticism would be welcome.

Good tie, Just a suggestion, what you have to watch is the hackle around the hook. Look for hackle that is only as wide as the gap of the hook. Otherwise you get miss strikes when the large amount of hackle cloges the hook point. You can clip some of it away to free up the point.

  6. PSSST SD only has like 48 years experience get someone who knows what they're doing

Like me I've tied atleast 6 flies.

Kidding kidding SD will you be doing any somewhat more advanced tying lessons? Not that I feel I am advanced but I think I have the basics but may be interested in some lessons in the trickier realms like deer hair and tiny drys, proper product selection and application

Sure if you like, that's why i prefer to give individual sessions geared towards a persons skills and how to hone them. I will deal with intermediate also to get you to the next level.

  7. Sure thing Lundvike. I'll be posting an outline of what I intend to do. But the aim will be to have you tying the basics so that over the winter you can tie up a series of patterns to fill you boxes for next season. The direction would be on good tying practices.

If there is interest you can pm me with any questions.

  8. Well it's been 48 years for me. Dame time flies when you're having fun. Started at 8 years old with my dad and a hand me down fly rod. We fished from French river in Ontario to the Miramichi River in NB. Tied a lot of flies standard and Atlantic's commercially and ran fly tying courses for boys clubs and boy scouts. Guided for a few years in BC and ran a fly fishing for life cancer clinic for women for a couple of years.

Still learning, I figure I'm only about half way there. Hay Don, Is it you and me at the top of the chart?

  9. You can make a great wasp trap. Take a 1 liter plastic pop bottle cut around the top where the curve stops. This makes a funnel. flip it upside down on the bottle. It's now a one way trap. leave some stale pop on the bottom and add about an inch of water. Wasps go in, can't get out and drown. I usually have about 3 or 4 on my deck. gets rid of em.

  10. Boys..

In most situations the ideal presentation for a fly - whether wet or dry - is a drag free natural drift. However there are times when we'll swing flies or streamers in the current.

The other night I was trying to cast to some risers with a dry and was having a hard time seeing the fly - and therefore mending my line properly. At one point I saw the wake from the fly and realized my line was downstream from the fly and pulling it faster than the current. Right when that happened however a fish rised and I was able to hook and land it.

Is this what you're referring to when you're talking about "skating" dry flies? Very similar to swinging a streamer with a downstream mend?

That's it all right. Had fun last night with foam skid bitches.

  11. Next time we get out Speyfishing together S.D., you can try my new Shooting head systems. I think the Scandi Head will work well with the TFO 6wt. Pro Series, as these rods have a very fast action, suitable for underhand casting. The Skagit Head should work well with the DC series Rod.

I bought two different sizes of the Ridgeline running lines, in 20lb. and 30lb., to see how well they will float, mend and shoot in different conditions. Anyone using Miracle Braid for running line with their shooting head systems?

I'm out in BC till mid next week but will give you a shout then for some Spey and slay. Also have a few new flies I need you to test that seem to work...

  12. Hey Toolman, looks like there's now stopping you now.

I hope to have a company that is dedicated to Spey fishing with rods, lines and everything else Spey becoming a sponsor of this site, and the company will be based not far from Calgary, also hope they are going to sponsor a Spey gathering

on the Bow, just trying to sort out the detail, hopefully i can get this done before i get there, so watch this space.

Going to have some nice Spey gear with me in September at really good prices because i get it trade price, so you will get it much cheaper than the stores.

    Gordon.

A Bow River Spey Clave would be great. I'll look forward to September.

  13. I am ordering a new CND GPS 5/6 Spey line next week. I've heard they are phenomenal lines and can't wait to try one.

I've been looking at the CND also and hope to test one out on the Meiser in the next week or so. Looks like a great line with super reviews.

  14. Just a wannabe.

Wondering if the Skeena trip calls for an 8wt or bigger? If bigger, will the fact that I'm a strong but wee tiny lass make casting a 9/10 all day a chore?

Last year when I went for summer Steelhead I met guys and gals fishing with outfits from 5 wt to 10 wt. I was impressed with some of the lighter outfits but I think a 6/7/8 would be a good choice. Leaning toward the heavier 8 wt's I had my first experience and tried out a with a 6 wt Meiser Highlander that a friend had that was a joy. Met a few ladies in Terrace and later on the river who where using 6 wts and fished all day with little effort. They both picked up a few steelies with Big shoulders and did well in the battle.

Just remember that you are hooking up to a Steelhead definition = Rocket ship on wheels.

  16. What is a skid bitch? I've never heard of them before.

A number of Golden Stone, Salmon fly and other species of stone fly imitation fished on the surface to match the egg laying and skimming mating original.

Skid = What they do on the water

    Bitch = Gender

Definition of name = Trout surface smashing action. Heart attack city. Or the ever popular Dame which risform do I cast to.Lots of different patterns.
