  1. I don't know if I agree with the registration idea, at least on an equal terms basis. To me it doesn't seem right that the hiker pays the same as the guy who drags four quads and two dirt bikes out in the back of his toy hauler. It's everyone's to enjoy. Punish those who abuse it.

I have to purchase a fishing license to fish. Maybe ATVers should have to purchase an ATV license to ATV.

  2. The only way people are going to improve, especially the ones that lack respect, is if it costs them money not to improve. Most people know better, they just don't care. The $30 or $40 fines do nothing. Littering, poaching, anything, $1000. No warnings.

Someone I know, who is actually a quadder, had what I thought was a good idea. At the start, or during some of the busier summer weekends (ideally every weekend), mark as many random camping sites as possible with GPS. Tag each site with a license plate number and inform the owner of said vehicle, they are now responsible for the site. Any problems and it comes back to them. I realize it's far from perfect, but will put some of the responsibility on individuals instead of always depending on F&W or conservation officers. Volunteers could do the mapping. I know everyone passes multiple random camping sites every time they fish any of the previously mentioned areas. To tag a waypoint with a license number takes no effort. Email SRD with the coordinates and license plate number on your return. It'll be impossible to issue a fine to someone after the fact, but at least it lets people know their actions are being watched.

  3. The wing is actually glued down, I was thinking about adding some elk hair instead of just a foam wing

I suggest the beefer rubber legs. I find that if you use the finer legs for more action, they get hung up in the elk hair.

  4. Both times I've broke a Sage, they only asked that I send in six inches of the broken section containing the ferrule(male or female). I assume to check the ID/OD for a correct fit with the remaining peice. Four piece would be different, probably just send the whole broken section in and call it good.

  5. If it’s me, I’d try either losing the split shot or shortening your leader (preferred). With the shorter leader and shot, you'll still get the flies down fast (with a good mend), but won't be hanging up as much. Occasionally touching down is good, means you're in the zone. Keep setting on everything. Also, with the shorter leader, you’ll have less ‘dead time’ from the take to indication. You're going to lose flies nymphing, rules of the game.

  6. I'd send that box right back to them.....it would have something other than the sunglasses in it though.

I've hyped them before, but I'll never buy anything other that Smith. Shades or goggles. My last 'broken' pair went back in a ziploc bag (all 20 some pieces) due to dog. I told the truth and said the dog chewed them up. Smith warranteed them, and because the model I brought in was discontinued, they let me pick which ones I wanted. WOW! I've sent 4 or 5 pairs in for warranty or repair without any issues.

  7. Not me personally, but I did some work in Utah a few years ago. The guys I was working with would snorkel the Green River a few times each summer and would clean up. Fly rods/reels, sunglasses, car keys, cell phones, fly boxes, cameras, you name it. Basically anything that could fall out of a drift boat, they'd find. They said most of the rods were broken, but they'd send the better ones in under the warranty programs.

Hmmm, the Bow has some deep slow water........

  8. Simms would have to do something horrible to lose me as a customer. I haven't had any issues with boots holding up (I'm well over 200lbs and probably fish 80+ days per year), but the felts do wear out long before the boots. Next pair will be Vibram.

  9. we need STIFF FINES for any offense. Regs are EASILY available online or ANYWHERE you buy a license....

I agree, kind of. Ignorance is not an excuse. For things like keeping a fish out of a closed river caught on barbed hooks, hang 'em high. For things like how de-barbed a hook is (I know, the denim test) it's not so black and white.

IMHO it's going to take some STEEP fines for the ignorance excuse to disappear. Word will get out.

  10. Honestly, I wouldn't bother with a kit. Any of the ones I've seen are usually poor quality and include a lot of stuff you're probably not going to use. For a vice, try to find a good quality used one. If you decide you're just not into it, you can always sell it for close to what you paid. The few tools you're going to need to get started (scissors, bodkin, bobbin, ect) are actually fairly reasonable. You don't need expensive stuff to learn with, but pay the money for a quality pair of scissors (I like Dr. Slick). Decide on two or three patterns you want to tie (wooly bugger), and only buy the materials for them. Go to a good fly shop and ASK for help. All materials are not created equal, get the good ones. Try to get a good handle on the skills for those two or three patterns before you move on to different flies. The same skills are used in basically every other pattern. Youtube is your friend.

Just beware, it's probably not as cheap as you think to roll your own.
