  1. Anyone done some DIY repairs to their fiberglass?

Nothing major, just a few chunks out of the chines and some wear through the gel coat and into the fiberglass a bit where the trailer bunk hits.

I've heard of guys using bondo, not interested. Epoxy the best bet?

Not really interested in dragging it to the states and don't really think the damage is bad enough to warrant a professional job either. It doesn't have to be perfect, it's going to get banged up again. Just want to do some preventative maintenance.

Also, anyone have anything different than carpet on their trailer bunks?

  2. I've had a Nor-Vise for about four months, put somewhere around 300 flies through it. I love it.

I only have the small inline jaws and don't see myself getting any others. They handle the big bully hooks and will hold down to 20s without issue. Probably won't fish anything smaller anyways.

I have a love hate relationship with the auto bobbin. It's miserable to thread, and having to put a friction lap around the frame is plain stupid. The connection between the frame and the spool hub is a thread trap (when threading). There has to be a better way and I think the answer is Ekich. The Ekich has the added bonus of not having to spool thread. It's not a big deal, but it's one less thing you have to do, label, buy, ect. $100 for a bobbin is ridiculous, but Norvise is $50 and a never ending need for more spools. That said, the auto feature is great. If you can, try them both before you buy (then you can confirm my suspicions). SilverDoctor's tip about the two bases is a good one. I mounted the thread post just a touch to far from the vise, occasionally I'll exceed the limits of the clutch and the bobbin won't retract all the way back to the hook.

Scud hooks are a bit of a problem, but manageable. You're not going to be spinning materials onto the hook shank at top speed anyways (maybe dubbing), and the process for applying dubbing to the thread doesn't change regardless of straight or curved shank.

    Hope that helps.

  3. the Hilux and the Surf are both great vehicles, and the diesel engine, gets better mileage the our NA diesel engine..I agree they would be great here..

That same trip, I rode in a Surf ( I think. It was left had drive) that had over 700k kms on it. It had lived it's life driving BAD roads at high speeds. That's amazing to me.

There are so many 'throw away' vehicles made currently. Makes you wonder why, when the technology/quality/whatever, is availible......and it's unlikely the cost of that Surf was double or triple or more than a throw away.

  4. A thirsty Tacoma.

Those FJs are awesome, pricy, but awesome.

Rode around in a Tacoma-like truck overseas a few years ago. I think it was a Toyota Hilux. Basically the Tacoma body style with the fold down bed sides and had a naturally aspirated diesel. I still can't figure out why it hasn't made an appearance in North America.

  5. Good to see you guys out there, at times the wind was very tough. We did OK, not sure on the final numbers but similar, worm was boss. Tossed some dries to risers, didn't work out. Fishpimp landed a gooder near the launch, nice ending. Very nice pics by the way.

  6. Simms Freestone. Great support and they don't look like moon boots. Only complaint is they have shrunk a bit, many wet/dry cycles. They'll be perfect for wet wading next summer. I probably have 80 days or so on them this year and I'm a fairly big guy, no quality issues at all. Next pair will be vibram.

  7. 1. What do you mean? I saw this with my own eyes. (Except for the part about the animals and the trailer).

    2. Obviously there is no cell phone coverage where I was. How was I supposed to report him?

I just knew someone would be critical of my actions here. Ralph is the criminal here, not me. No wonder so many of the really good people don't post on here anymore.

I don't think Ralph is the only one fishing with bait.......

  8. Shop Vac rules, keeps the greeblies down. Beware of hooks. I sunk a sz 4 streamer hook (fully barbed) deep into my big toe about a month ago. Had to cut my sock away, 'trim' the carpet, then force it all the way through, clip the hook point off, and pull it back out. Blood everywhere. I now pinch all barbs as soon the package gets opened.

  9. Anyone I have ever talked to that has flown out of Russia were extremely glad to have gotten out and swore they would never return. No doubt the fishing would be good but why go to Russia to do it? Scotland and Ireland are nicer..they have better food, they have Scotch and their beers are the best on the planet IMO.

I know more than one guy that swear they're NEVER going back to Russia. One lived on Mars bars and Doritos for the final two weeks of his hitch.

Their beer is alright. I spent a month in one of the 'istans and drank a pile of Russian Baltika Fives. Just about as much vodka, not so good. Worst was fermented camel milk. I traded a local guy a can of Copenhagen for their 'snuff'. I still don't know what it was made of, absolutely horeeb. It was a green paste, smelled and tasted like death. When in Rome. Very honest, hardworking people.

  10. I took a folding banquet table and cut about 2" off each leg, it's a good height. Sprayed the top with craft glue and covered it with poker table green felt. It's easy on the eyes and I find it's easier to pick materials up off of it but will still 'catch' excess dubbing, thread, ect. so they don't end up in the cold air return. I just give it the once over with the shopvac when I'm done the session. I use one of those table mounted swinging lamps with a 120W bulb. It gets hot, but belts out light. For materials, one of those mega tackle boxes, gear guys use. It has enough compartments to keep things fairly organized and works well for trips too. Anything that doesn't fit in it, goes in some medium sized tupperware containers. If you can, put you're desk/table somewhere where you'll get natural light. I find that the more organized I stay, the more efficient I am.

  11. why would they nab someone doing 115 (posted 110) which is nearly everyone when there is a very good chance someone will come by going 15-25 over the posted limit.

I wouldn't stand on the side of hwy 2 to hand out a 5 kph ticket either.

I haven't seen any more sheriffs than usual out lately, but have seen an increase in the number of heavy commercial vehicles pulled over by the DOT guys. Good to see, they don't wreck very often, but when they do, man is it bad.
