  1. Have Korkers greatly improved in quality recently or something? No personal experience with them myself, but I would guess this thread is the first time I've ever seen a generally positive review of them? Most everything I've ever read about them is praise of the innovative multi sole design but complaints in regards to the quality and durability?

They took out the plethora of mesh vents on the upper, which was where mine fell apart after 2 years. Also, the new sole is full width and easier to change. It should offer better grip with the felt soles because of the increased felt area. I selfishly hope that they are more durable.

  2. Kinda like you became the world's pre-eminent climatologist while post-docing at Fox News?

    So true...great post.

Your average person like Don that has no experience in oil and gas believes what they read. They have an impression that the ground explodes when fraced and fluid leaks everywhere and people are jumping for joy on a great frac.

In fact fracs need to be only as small as possible to do the job. You can't frac rock outside the narrow...sometimes 4 meters of rock or less because you lose all your value cause these fracs cost a lot. You can't frac a well that won't contain the frac because you waste your time and money.

Shallow 300 m wells in the US...yes...those can be a problem. Our wells in Canada...are all fine. If there was a huge problem or even a significant problem...all the free, public access data would prove it. There is none...so nothing to write about...so you try and say...but...but...but...a bad study in the US says fracing is a big bad beast.

LOL...if it was not so sad...this whole discussion would be funny. Don...it is your tax dollars...and your higher price fluid...and your reduced return on investment in your RRSP's that pays to counter the crap...that is the sad part of the story.

    Sun

P.S. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you also Don. May your new year be full of jumping trout and whispering scenic brooks!

  3. I personally would not have an issue if they raised license fees. But then, I fish about 50-75 times per year. If I only fished 2 or 3 times a year, I would have an issue with significantly higher license fees.

The solution to that would be a cut-rate day license for residents with further discounts for minors. This way we can still jack up the fees and buddy with 2 kids who just want to drown a worm on their annual trip to the lake won't be shelling out $200. With online purchasing, its not inconvienient.

  4. So true Hawgstoppah, I often fish stretches of water that others scoff at and say is fish less. I love exploring new water and just getting out there and getting to know a stretch of water can be rewarding. Those "special spots" that you talk about snuffy are sometimes hard won. I have been lucky enough to be invited to a few that are stunning and have found a few that I have shared with with friends I know will not broadcast them. I return the kind by not abusing an area I am shown. Its common classic courtesy.

Oh I know all that - I have some of my own and think long and hard before I disseminate them amoung my aquaintance. It's a big part of what I love about the game.

But I'm not doing this professionally, so I was curious as to how guides deal with the apparent catch22 between having an income, or keeping one's secrets. There's also the potential for a race to the bottom in which if one of your peers starts guiding on THAT river, you may as well too. So the question I had was how do you prevent this from happening, or do you simply keep pushing back the boundaries year after year?

  5. A couple of recent topics (Hawgstopper's hawgs in the photo section and DaveJensen's NZ topic) got me thinking - from what I understand, the prep for this involves a LOT of walking and fishing to find those special fish and spots that people will pay for. Given that, do you guys actually take locals out or do you try to stick with out-of-province/country folks? It would seem to me that with the former, you would slowly guide your way out of a job as your favorite haunts become overrun with your one-time clients.

  6. What do you get for catching a 20" cutt on a #8 foam beetle and then pulling not one but two #20 nymphs out of it's mouth? 3lb tippet and microscopic flies (nymphs no less) seems silly to me when you can cast huge ugly flies and have them slurp them up without discrimination. Mind you I'm not looking to join any clubs.

On the other hand, I was mucking about with a fussy cutt on the Livingstone on Tuesday, and when I got him on a #18 spinner, he had a #6 egg sucking leech in his craw. I was thinking: how on earth do you break off a cutt on 3X?

  7. Called the city bylaw office last night and you can take a moterized boat up to city limits which is 194th Ave not the deerfoot extender.

Also about poachers, I was out a coupleof weeks ago and was taking a walk through fish creek park and started chatting with a guy and found out that he uses bait all the time on the river and does not care what the regulations are since he is a tax payer (What a stupid idoit) anyways he then told me if I wanna find out where all the big fish are to come here (FFC) make a acoount and read the reports. I played dumb and when I was away from him called Rap and made a report, even though they could do nothing at the time, the call was recorded which is very important, as they use these reports for funding and to knopw where the hot spots are.

So I do warn people, share your experinces on the river but be careful about naming locations cause who knows who is reading the report.

Indeed. Once the poachers/quadders/human toxic waste have finished destroying your current favorite spots, they'll come here to find your new ones and move on to them. It's sad, but given the current near total lack of enforcement, we can't be too secretive.

  8. I used to ride all the time. And I mean ALL the time. Work, for play. Everywhere.

Then I got married, had kids, and took up this crazy sport called fly fishing. ALL my free time is now spent fishing.

Why not combine the two? A couple of weeks back I had my wife give me a headscarf from my parents place in the Hat and then meet me at Reesor for a day on Battle. Much fun!!

  9. I don't know if this will interest anyone or not, but there is a big race going on in Banff from Thursday to Sunday. For the most part, I am of the opinion that watching bike racing is like watching paint dry. However, the criterium on Saturday night is just about the best free entertainment one can find.

It's 60 laps of a 1km lap in downtown Banff. For those who've never seen such a thing, you'll be shocked at the speed. Add in the most dangerous course I've ever seen and probably some rain to make the roads nice and slick and the bloodsport aspect will only add to the spectacle (I think the red smear I left in front of the theatre last year is still faintly visible).

For info, the main site is here:

    http://www.banfflakelouise.com/events-and-...spectator-guide

This is the criterium page (note that the lower categories go first, so the fast boys won't be off until ~8:00):

    http://www.banfflakelouise.com/events-and-...tails/criterium

And, finally, reading this would probably help any would-be spectator to know what's going on (just like Nascar, it's all about drafting):

  10. I agree. I wave them on and point at the stop sign, and wave thanks. Cyclists like you and I that obey the rules of the road are rare.

The rules of the road just make so much sense; problems generally start when someone behaves unpredictably. That said, I disagree with your assertion, at least when it comes to people who would label themselves as cyclists. I know an awful lot of them and the most are quite good.

In any event, we live in a province in which 90% of drivers can't pass a learner's exam and therefore do not know the rules of the road. Surely, this is a greater issue.

  11. Off leash dogs.

People who, when I'm at a stop sign on my bike, slam on their brakes and stop in the middle of the road like I'm a pedestrian in a crosswalk. Bonus points for when it's a 4-lane road and said driver sits there waving me across while in the other 3 lanes, presumably populated by people who know the rules of the road, traffic is whizzing by.

  12. I hope one day Alberta adopts the fly fishing only policy like BC. It's great, and does a lot to take the inevitable increase of pressure off the resource, just imagine if you could use indicators or lead on the Wiggy.....the Bulls are already sitting ducks, kinda of like the Cutts on the Livingstone/Oldman.

Somewhat tangential, but I just went searching through the BC Sportfishing Regulations and can't find any mention of indicators or lead being banned in classified waters. Nevertheless, I have heard this before; it just doesn't seem to be in the regulations. Which one is it?
