  1. Thanks Dave, we know what you meant about the other stuff, but we do like 'em barbless.

Here's a Cutty Buddy of mine who can't close his mouth anymore even with such a tasty morsel nearby.

He's going to slowly starve to death, when he gets weak one of us will help him out. Kinda sad though eh?

That is quite unfortunate, but the reason is that his maxilla is jammed. Next time you see his like, do him a favour and use your forceps to pry it lateral to his mandible. It's not pretty, but he'll live.

  2. I was thinking something like this would work. Maybe an 1130 rather than 1120 would float better. Tiemco 2487 (vs 2457)

Nice tie, but do yourself a favour and don't waste it on a 2487 unless you fish exclusively with 6X or finer.

  3. As much as we might like to see people hung, drawn, and quartered for criminally infringing on our interests, that's not realistic. I doubt that they were so flush with cash that the loss of $100000 and a $50000 vehicle won't be extremely painful, especially with their revenue stream now gone. Given the resources at their disposal, I'm pleasantly surprised that SRD caught them.

  4. So, Im here in calgary visiting family, I leave on tuesday and have already been out on the water a few times. twice on the bow and twice on the elbow. in probably 15 hours of fishing, I have had only one strike and i couldnt hook up. I talked to someone at a fly shop and he suggested i stay with small dry flies, midges, mosquitos, etc. I have also read on a few sites that I should nymph instead. I have been using a 2lb tippet and do my best to cast accurately and softly to the few rising fish I have seen.

basicly, I just want to know what I am doing wrong, if anyone has any tips for me, etc

I really dont want to go back home to ontario with a skunk. HELP

First thing you should understand is that the Bow above Harvie Passage and the Elbow in its entirety are closed.

  5. watched a asien lady almost turn the wrong was down a one way then screekes out back into the lane, then slows for a red and then runs it just missing another car. The tickes for distracted driving should be $1000. this would put a quicker end to the problem.

had a homeless guy ask me for a fish and he just did not get it that it was illegal, he just kept yelling that he had a place to cook it....yah right

You're right: if the odds of getting caught are low, the penalties have to be severe, much like driving without insurance.

I almost forgot the school bus driver I saw last week intentionally run a red and just hit the brakes in time to avoid mowing down a bunch of pedestrians crossing with the light. That one I called in.

  6. Riding to work this morning and the guy beside me at the light talking on his cell phone starts running the red when the advance for the left turn lane goes green. He narrowly misses causing an accident, then sits there for 10s when his light does turn green. The girl behind him has her ipad on the steering wheel and only occasionally glances at the road. Saw 3 people run red (not yellow) lights.

Last week a lady at work asks me, "So you fish?". I say yes and she asks me to give her some. I tell her that it's mostly illegal where I go and I'd be letting them go even if it wasn't. She informs me that she'd eat them all and to hell with the law. I tell her that that, in a nutshell, is why in 10 years tuna will be extinct and salmon will be $50/pound. She looks at me like I'm crazy.

    Hell really is other people.

  7. No. Calgary has a distinct lack of off leash parks. If anything, I would like to see more. Dogs running around along the river are not making the banks unstable. Following that rationale, yourself as an angler would be contributing to bank instability. I don't live in Calgary, but I feel for dog owners as they have a right to have areas to take out their dogs and in Calgary off leash areas are very spread out. 99.9% of the Bow isn't along a designated offleash park, perhaps you need to broaden your angling horizons. we build houses, freeways, parking lots, etc, etc, etc on top of wetlands in Calgary, an off leash area is the least of the concern from an urban park wetland perspective. I am all for wetlands, all for protection of riparian areas, but you know what they say about picking battles. I should add that the population has doubled or so since 20 years ago - kind of comes with the territory of a major urban setting.

You sir, are talking out your bum. Virtually all the green space and most of the parks in the city are off leash. For example, ALL of the green space on the northern Bow river escarpment from Tuscany to Deerfoot and then all the way north on both sides of Deerfoot to the city limits is designated off leash. Playgrounds are, by contrast, nonexistent. Your right to take out your dogs ends where your dogs' existence begins to interfere with the rights of your fellow citizens. We are far, far past that already and have been for some time.

  8. Actually Hawgstopper - my insurance just gleefully replaced a ridiculously expensive bike I demolished with a garage and a roof rack, and I was candid with the details. Your insurance just might cover this for you. At the very least, it would be worth talking to your agent.

  9. I've had my eye on a nice Argon 18 or maybe a Cervelo, but it seems like the Cervelos are as common as grass on the streets and roads hereabouts. I used to ride a nice hand built Marinoni until it was stolen. That bike served me well for a lot of years.

So long as you don't have a relationship with gravity like mine, there really aren't many bad frames out there (the madone being an exception). But, if you want something novel, you'll have to pay for it. The pinarellos are just beautiful up close and they don't seem to have gone as far down the light-is-right road as some. If you want a forever bike like your Marinoni, you still can't beat Ti, but there is a weight penalty.

  10. Not really true... for commuting I would say you would be safe, but out ont he trails I have seperated my tire from the rim twice now with my tubeless set up which ended up with a long walk home once and the second time the girfriend had a tube and pump for me to use. I am no longer worried about pinch flats though!

Really??? Were you using a UST rim and tire or a conversion kit? The later can be very sketchy, but I've ridden and raced UST rims and tires for years and, while I still carry a tube and CO2 on principle, never had a single flat. Mind you, I always used 32-35 psi.

  11. You might be just paranoid enough! Good call on the CO2s as well. They aren't just faster, but easier to use with cold/wet hands. Come to think of it, I've had a whole bunch of minipumps over the years and I'm pretty sure none of them were in any way capable of filling a tire.

Currently, I have 3 spare tubes in my pack! Pump, compressed air cartridges, and repair kit. Overkill, but I'll never have to walk because of a flat again.

  12. Yes, head start. I went out past Bullshead then across on the Maple Creek road to 40. It was a nice day, but I wasn't moving very fast by the end.

    Autocorrect strikes again???

This post really had me scratching my head, until I figured out that "headscarf" is supposed to be "head start"; too funny...

  13. on a side note what is the rule about people on bikes,i always thought that if your on the bike your a car if your off then your a pedestrian.

i often see people stop for a guy crossing the road and hes on the bike.i hate that.

I ride a lot and this bugs the hell out of me. There always seems to be someone skidding to a stop in the middle of a four lane road to wave me across, while the other 3 lanes keep going
