  1. I was considering selling my drift boat and purchasing one of these in the three seater version.I really want to have the portability to take a nice inflatable camping and also float the river.I was wondering if anyone has this model here in town?Im very curious if you would feel cramped? It would be the wife kid and dog.Would you feel safe in a lake if the wind came up?Would you purchase better oars than what comes with? How is the buoyancy with three people in it?how is the rod storage you can get with them?Any other positive or negatives you have? LOL thanks for your imput. LOL

    Hay Jay,

you could certainly buy a fancy heat gun and I have used an old heat gun of mine that I used to strip paint works well. But… I like to use an ordinary tea candle. I find I can control it easier. You do need one other thing for this and that’s some narrow light clear shrink wrap tubing a bit wider than your fly line.

This method is great for all coated fly lines and gives strong, small and neat loops, which will glide noiseless through the guides. Here’s a step by step, if you have an old line you can use it to experiment with. It does take a bit of patience and practice but not hard to do.

    1.     Cut a piece of tubing approximately about 2 to 3 inches long. Pass the fly line through the shrink tubing so a few inches protrude out the other end.

    2.     Loop your fly line and pass it back through the tubing you should end up with 1/2 inch from the end of the shrink tubing. Adjust the loop size to your liking

    3.     Slowly apply heat to the shrink tube with the side of a candle. Heat the line in short intervals and gently. The coating of the fly line will melt together. Only heat the shrink wrap tubing not the fly line protruding.  Repeat this slowly until all the fly line connection is smoothly merged and melted together with no gaps between the two lines, take your time and work at it. I like to roll the melted line between my fingers a bit when it is still warm. careful not to burn yourself.

    4.     When the coating of the fly line cools a bit, you can remove the shrink tube carefully. The shrink tube is best removed while it is still a little warm. I use a fine pair of scissors and cut from the loop down.

    5.     Don't apply too much heat or you will burn the line. If the line burns or browns clip it off and start again.

Hope this helps and makes sense. Started using this method a years back. Never had one fail, just like factory made loops.

You forgot to mention the size of shrink tube?1/8 I believe?I bought mine at greggs distributors

  3. So every spring when the two groups of guide company’s  open there annual school for guides this will add about 24 or so more potential guides to the river. This is big money for the companies so who cares about the river right just the cash coming in for the school and the clients the company can put on the river.Im down with guides on the river for the economy ect ect but really we need to get some control.Sorry to the two groups but that’s the reality. You fish the banks and there full you fish your boat you play bumper boats. When is the This all going to stop let’s get some seasonal closures as well.Just my opinion.

  4. I originally tried to order three bigger cup holder inserts and two Hyde full size boat decals without American conversion the price for shipping was 30 dollars more than the actual items I was going to purchase. Then I removed the cup holder inserts and just tried to order the decals and the bloody shipping was around 19 dollars more than the stickers. To me that’s bizarre why would shipping be so shitty for a big company that knows Canada Needs there products as well.Maybe I should have just bought a clacka. The older boats have smaller cup inserts and will not hold my coffee cup.Rant over I just wanted a dam coffee on my boat.

Is there a guideline or rule about removing these and wasting them? I would like to take each one and just toss it to the gulls but someone told me the Conservation Officers would ticket you for wasting a catch...

Look around a little I thought I read something that said kill them and eat them or throw them in the trash .

Ended up getting a 2 man pontoon boat instead. Can still break down and fit into the back of a small SUV only takes about 15 min to set up. So that's another option for you.

Thanks man had one of those and customized the crap out of it.Then I got a drift boat and thinking I might just go for a raft now so I can have a useable trailer and a boat.I like the duel purpose idea.

  7. Just sold my boat now I’m looking at one of these as well they seem pretty cool I was thinking about ordering one but I cannot decide and there is not a lot of reviews on it but it seems ok.I going to call Cabela’s and see if they can get one in or have one in stock but I would really like to see it with own hands.

Im with monger. No way i would support flyfishing only in the Bow ever. But definitely would argue one hook only and no trebles. Probably going to be a time many of us oldsters wont be able to cast a fly rod re: balance in water etc etc.. But would still like to be be able to get out there with a spinning rod which  much easier to fish with as one gets older.

Also the young kids just learning the ways of fishing and how to cast.I would agree on single barbless.I usually just cut two prongs off for the kids and remove the barb. You certainly miss more fish but that’s fishing with kids.

  9. As for the guides how many trips per season do they do on average? How Many fish do they catch a trip ?How many guides are on the bow?Take those numbers and the math is most likely outrageous  .Then you ad in regular Joes fly fishers and gear chuckers man those total fish could ad up in a real hurry that’s hard on fish.I often have 5 plus fish nights or days. Not saying any one thing is the problem but the  fish are really hit hard on the good months.Plus all the other bull crap they have to put up with.just my opinion it doesn’t matter like my wife says lol

  10. Just my two cents for what it’s worth. You can use any dropper off your hopper you like but try to Match the hatch caddis right now seems to be the go to.As for the hopper be the hopper if you fell in water and wanted to get out and couldn’t swim you would twitch and struggle so try that or dead drift the hopper till the end of the swing. The bow is a tough   river but try to look at it as it’s small river pick out seems and obstructions back Eddy’s etc unless your fishing hoppers look for grassy banks or fallen off peices of shore line that’s where a hopper could fall in.This site is excellent and many people will be willing to send you in the right direction.I could go on for hours but I’ll let others chim in.

  11. Called one in the other night a family bombing bait got a call back from a Cochrane guy he said I’m in Canmore on a cougar call I said they will be gone by the time you get here. Then I get a call from a high river guy about 20 mins later and he says I’m just west of Longview right now so I said I don’t think your going to make it either so basically wasted tons of fishing time on the phone.Where is the Calgary cops that’s the question there are tons of visitors in town for the stampede you would think someone would be on duty but that’s a big NO.How ever I sent the one fish cop pictures of the van the people and a pin drop for location and I’m sure they will be back there soon.

  12. You can buy a 1/8 peice of shrink tube and   Fuse it back together then cut the shrink tube off.Go to fish tales fly shop and they can weld a new one on as well.check out you tube.
