I don't think Norm will be here in January. Perhaps Chris Bird might look into having him come in some year but that is his call to make. I'm sure one of the local shops carrying this vise will be there though.
-
Actually yes it does. But let me tell you this if you can try one out do so there are guys that got one and got rid of them almost as fast as they bought them because they are far different than any other vise out . Perhaps in your case it may not be that way being you haven't started yet but still I would suggest trying one first if possible. It's been said there is no middle ground with this vise either you love or it.....I love mine so much I have 2 that I always use.

This topic is brought over from the Ask the Pros section and is in response to a question asked by Tbone in the fly hooks thread. This topic should bring up some interesting theories as to hook choices in flies.
-
I think a more appropriate question would be a question of which style of hook for a particular application. Some brands don't have all the styles of hooks required for certain fly styles. I know of several styles of hook made only by one manufacturer which more or less forces you to use their hook if you follow patterns by the letter. Scud hooks for example may be better strength wise from one maker while say their nymph hooks straighten easily or are too soft. There is also the thin wire vs heavier wire construction; some makers offer both while others do not. In reality one cannot say one brand is better than the other overall.

I think Fish Tales has a seminar on rod building or at least they did in the past.

Being that new names are showing up in the tying section all the time I thought it might be of some use to start a thread about vises. This could be of use and interest to those starting out or looking to upgrade to another vise to get first hand input from us here and to ask more questions about vises of particular interest. The main theme for this will be : What vise do you use now? what do you like or dislike about it? I personally use a Norvise exclusively now. I like the fact it has 4 different vise heads available: standard jaw, large jaw, fine point jaw and a tube fly head. I also like that fact that it spins in line which is really neat for dubbing, makes the process much quicker. Probably the biggest drawback most people will find with this vise is the cost but it's not the most expensive vise on the market. One more thing about it is the fact it does take time to get used to using one.

Try this : send them back to yourself , open them then delete. Most likely cause is deleted unopened messages. It has worked for me and I have done this deliberately to try and see why it happens and this is what I have found.

AC that is just too funny

Is it really necessary to add the head cement? I don't think it's needed on this type of fly. I mostly use cement or nail hardener to reinforce wingcases made of feather fibres
-
Sometimes, often actually simpler is better. Nothing wrong with it. In the end the fish have the final say.

Why not try some coloured glass beads in larger sizes, opens new colour combos.

Thanks for signing on Doug.Tango and I will work out the final details and we will post the guide lines on our respective boards. My guess might be a Nov date but that is still to be determined. That puts us at 8 here 11 on the UK side

Darren if I remember right straggle fritz is the name given to it by Dave Downie a tying supply dealer in the UK, it is very close to catus chenille here
-
Another option is to make a herl rope with a fine wire reinforcement. Any one do a neutral buoyancy boatman?
-
With a little modification this could be a good boatman pattern.
-
In a way this pattern reminds me of a sedgehog.......is it based from a sedgehog?
-
brndawg you are missing one very important point here.......anything posted here is considered written and is more conclusive evidence then any spoken word will ever be.......Let's say you were this guide and it was released who you are what would you do about it? I'll bet you'd be coming to us to find the identity of who did it...........then what?
-
This thread seems to be going nowhere except in the direction that someone 's name is going to be let out and if that happens let me assure you that the one who does it will be reprimanded........no exceptions ......consider yourselves warned
-
Latest update : we need at least 4 or 5 more and then we can make this happen. The UK side is ready to go for all intents and purposes. Let's get this one rolling soon please.

A Warm Welcome To Our New Uk Members

Welcome Scotfly and let me assure there are more than 2 "natives that escaped" . We'll have some fun on this side too. -
This most likely happened by deleting an unread message. Try messaging that minus one to your self and then delete it....happened to me before too and if memory serves me right this solved the issue

Perhaps a word of caution is in order here. Before hiring a guide or anyone to do a service for you for that matter, check this person out. Ask for references and check them out. Treat the hiring practise as you would if you were building a home or doing renos and things of that nature. Remember there are alot of fly by nights in this world.

Thanks ladystrange perhaps your harping on them on tyers here will get them involved. It has the makings for a great swap and could easily become an annual event. All it takes is participation on your part. FYI: Flies tied here will be gathered by myself and I send them off to Tango in the UK. He does the same from his end. So if you are concerned about shipping them overseas you need not worry it will be taken care of for you.

I notice that a few new members from one of the UK boards have signed on with us. Join with me to give these nice people a warm welcome here.
