  1. I agree with you Don it's not the best solution but if one is in a pinch it could get one through. True it does require some effort as well. I just passed that info on in case someone could be out in a remote area and is in a bt of a bind.
  2. I never varnish floss.
  3. I forgot to mention that with floss the less you touch it with your fingers and hands the less likely you are to cause damage to it, ie break strands in th floss that will stick out all over the place.
  4. Why not try a double taper line instead. You said you plan on using it for small streams so distance is not a high priority, fishing dries with a double taper your presentation will be softer as well. Also if one gets beaten you can turn it around and use the other end.
  5. I'm assuming that the school of thought you are asking about has to do with bobbins used for floss or wire.....bobbins make the material handling so much easier, especially floss when you want it to stay flat, especially true on any kind of a rotary vise. I use the tradional type bobbins more for use with wire, floss, vinyl ribbing , tubing or and thing else that can be stored on a spool. It's just so much easier to handle when contained with something you can hold in your hand.
  6. West Winds had it last time I was there , they also had the kit as well.
  7. Don I have yet to wear out or nick a stainless on yet that have the thicker walls and polished radii. Now the flared end ones that's another matter. Their use is limited to spooled wire. There is alot to be said about the grade and hardness of the stainless steel being used for the majority of stainless bobbins. If you have a stainless bobbin with a nick in it you can polish it out using kevlar thread for those of you that are not aware of this bit of info.
  8. I have regular style ruby insert and a titanium insert bobbins that have been good so far but I only have been using them for floss for the most part. Has anyone else tried these types? ?The ones I have are the Dr Slick ones.
  9. AC what type of Danville do you like?
  10. I can say that the fly that flyangler refers to is very unique, almost novelity if you will. I must say I have never seen anything quite like it but I'm sure it will take a fish or two.
  11. I use both but prefer stainless because of the fact it gerates less heat and disipates much better than ceramic, which is important to the system of tying I use. A word of interest here about stainless bobbin: they are not created equally. Different grades of stainless are used in their making. The ones I used are not flared at the end like most but are straight and radiused and highly polished. Tey are also thick walled which allows this radius and polishing to be applied.
  12. Curious as to what you tyers prefer and why. Let's hear your thoughts on this subject.
  13. I think he means nothing......just look at the context it was used.
  14. Now that one looks the business ; either one would be good.
  15. It seems not many fish the trude styles much.....such a shame as at times they are far better than anything else you could tie on.
  16. Your tying poor? I think not Jeff
  17. AC would say this fly has some dabbler inspiration in it? It kind of has a dabbler look to it that I like. Good job my friend.
  18. This question has crossed my mind many times and Brian's post about naming new patterns brings the question up again. In my opinion a truly new pattern is a rare occurance. It's been my finding that most "new" patterns are just variations of already existing patterns that some one has renamed. I'm curious as to what everyone else's view on this subject is.
  19. If you look around you'll find that the same pattern has different names in different areas. Name it what you want , chances are that same fly has a different name elsewhere.
  20. Another option if you can't fold it is to strip off one side.
  21. Absolutely
  22. Actually I never got a chance to fish at all while out there but a few friends tried out the stuff I was toying with in the evenings. I had tight deadlines to meet so no fishing but it will be different next year, I'll have time then I hope.
  23. A stinger is our term for a trailer hook........Fireline is a fishing line made by Berkley......very strong for it's diameter.
  24. Very good point ...... Perhaps getting more is not such a bad idea even if one has to dye themselves to get the required colour. Polor aire is a decent sub for it but it still doesn't have the translucence of the real thing.
  25. It's getting pricey and I have it dyed in colours that are not readily available at most places.
