Hey Toolman, looks like there's now stopping you now. I hope to have a company that is dedicated to Spey fishing with rods,lines and everything else Spey becoming a sponsor of this site, and the company will be based not far from Calgary, also hope they are going to sponsor a Spey gathering on the Bow, just trying to sort out the detail, hopefully i can get this done before i get there, so watch this space. Going to have some nice Spey gear with me in September at really good prices because i get it trade price, so you will get it much cheaper than the stores. Gordon.

Hi Hawgstoppa, I fish a 15ft rod and 9/10 when Steelheading on the Thompson ect, just makes it easier to cover the water, i also like to fish a long belly line rather than a Skagit or shooting head, yes they are easier to cast but i hate stripping in so much running line, especially Steelheading in the winter. Hi Hawgstoppa, Sorry i missed your post while havin a nose around, there are plenty of Spey reels that are Salt water resistant, and as for the rods, well just a wash down with warm water. Not sure of the size of river you fish, but for Steelhead a rod rated 9/10 should do the job , the head length of the line depends on the width of the river, the trick is to get a rod long enough and a line with a head length suited to the river you are fishing,(no point in fishing a line with a 75ft head if the river is only 55ft across.). I think a common fault is to fish a short rod and try and force it to work, there is an old table called the five times rule, which means that the rod you fish with in Speycasting should be able to cast a maximum of five times its length in line. (15ft rod = 75ft of line ), but this is the max without forcing the rod,and and in a normal speycasting style. So for the rivers you fish remember the five times rule as a maximum, this can help you get an idea of the rod length needed. Hope this helps. Gordon.

Hi Guy's, Good to see the Spey forum busy, but be warned, once you get started there is no stopping the Spey train. Like Toolman says getting started does not have to be expensive, i can't say to much on the cost of Spey gear, but i will have loads of the latest rods , reels and lines with me , hopefully i can arrange a Spey day on the Bow while i'm there, let you guy's try some really cool new stuff out, i am working on a couple of new Spey things right now for the Calgary area, hopefully i will be able to give more detail in a couple of weeks. Hi Everyone, Well its great that the guy's on the Forum have started a new Spey lounge, hopefully it will go on to be of interest to all Fly casters and anyone interested in Fishing. This Spey lounge will be good for sharing info on the world of Spey, and having see the Bow river i see it as a Speycasters heaven. I hope the Spey section is a place where any questions can be answered and we can all learn from each other, after twenty years on the Spey i still learn something new almost every day. Hi Guy's, I will post the dates as soon as i can, just sorting out my flights, will be good to catch up Toolman, can do a school for six and only six per day, but hope to have a few days available including the weekend. I can only take a few of the Sharpe's Spey Staff's with me because of the weight,( the airlines are starting to catch up with me.) Glenbow, the full day will cost $120.00 per person, as soon as my flights are booked i will let anybody that is interested know the exact date. Because of the weight of the Sharpe's Spey wading Staff, i can only take five or six, the cost is around $100.00 each, i think the airlines are on to me, as they only allow 20kgs, and i arrived with 43kgs last time in Calgary. Will post the dates as soon as i can get away from the Spey. Thanks Guy's Gordon. Hi Silverdoctor and Toolman, Glad you are putting the Sharpe's Spey Staff to good use silverdoctor, i hope to be back over in September so may be able to take a couple more over, hope we can catch up when i get there as i will be flying into Calgary. Going to the CLA next weekend so will see all the new products, its the biggest fishing show in the world with lots of new products, if anybody needs a Sharpe's Spey staff let me know, and i will try and bring some over with me, they are one piece with a measure on the side, weighted bottom and made from steel with a rubber foot. Hi Guy's If you do set up a Spey forum count me in, i will try and help whatever way i can, right now i am back in Scotland and back working on the Spey (going Sea-trout fishing in an hour or so, or when it get dark). I hope to do another Spey day on the Bow later in the year, but if i can help with a Spey section, more than glad to do so.
