  1. I was going to make my first trip this sept/oct.

i'm really disappointed about those numbers.

Can anyone explain how to read the tyee daily test fishing data

What does a July 30th steelhead index value of

    0.45 mean

    .45 steelhead per hour?

Tyee isn't actually correlated to steelhead, as it's a sockeye test fishery. So it's hard tomgive you a per hour or per day. With that, you can still follow the trends. If you're on Facebook look up North Coast Steelhead Alliance as they provide trend graphs. Take them with a grain of salt as they are not a steelhead test fishery. For example last year was forecast as one of the best years, but it was likely forecasting very high due to low water which was causing more fish to be caught in the nets.

  2. That's not what I've heard. Guys fishing spoons, jigs etc.

Looking at how many guys fish the bow with gear, I doubt it's any better than the vedder in winter.

Maybe youre too Busy looking down at your slickshooter slipping through your fingers to notice them?

How would limiting anglers stressing fish have no effect on the fishery? Talk about double standards. I guess steelhead are immune to everything you bitch about.

It's almost like you think I'm suggesting putting less pressure on fish would make more fish magically appear this year!

In case you forgot, swinging flies is a far lower percentage game than fishing gear, nymphing etc.

I'm glad what you've heard, but again you have no idea what you're talking about. Poor ocean survival, mixed with worse management causes low run numbers year over year, and pointing fingers at gear fisherman quickly undermines any effort to actually worry about fish returns . The sheer number of fish that will have died from FN take will far outnumber incidental take from sport anglers.

There are bigger issues then the number of anglers, and definitely their gear choice, that need to be solved at a management level before the first steelhead of the season returns.

Go for a lottery, restrict angler gear. That doesn't increase one fish that happened to get caught in ocean nets, or nets in the mouth who are apparently species specific... solve those problems then look to recreation. Alienating gear anglers is a brilliant idea, particularly when you're obviously clueless in the ratio of fly to gear on the river.

  3. I am simply wondering if anyone has ever tried one of these boats.

    https://www.cunninghamboats.ca/best-lake-fly-fishing-boat/

They look like the bees knees, but there is a fairly heavy price tag attached ($3000 CAD, I believe), enough to afford both a good pontoon boat and a good fishing kayak. I guess it is local company, but I have never seen one or heard anyone speak of them (other than the review in Fly Fusion Magazine). Oh, the places you could go with that light sleek frame and oars. The only downside (other than the price) compared to a pontoon or kayak is the on-the-spot manoeuvrability.

Price tag probably reflects the hellman canoe..those things are perty damn pricey. Would actually not be a bad kit if you were into canoeing and could use this as an add on

  4. How did that big bald head of yours come up with this theory?

Pretty sure the advisory was sent to Jordan and asked him to ensure his head was covered at all times while fishing, such that he doesn't cause a sudden evaporation event.

In other news, nice to see some cool nights considering the daytime highs...we have some hope yet

  5. Funny I disagree. I only reel fish if they put themselves there. Id say 75% of fish can be landed by stripping in, and it's typically the switch over from stripping to reeling where *hit goes awry. See a lot of guys struggle to keep tension when going from stripping to reeling, so just skip that part and strip them in. If the fish runs you into your reel, great, but strip em! You can strip a yard way faster then turning your reel 4 or 5 times..

  6. So sorry has the question been answered ? What is the boundary. For the longest time it was the pump.My nieghbor does some welding for heritage point FD and he asked last season this question and they said pump below 22x.The city limits is on the north side of Deerfoot bridge but not on south?I don't go up there anymore now the bridge is there and the place is crawling with fishermen.I see now many vehicles driving up and down the river bank parking in the trees sneaking in from the construction side upstream of bridge.Don't hear any whining about this ?

It's the bridge. Pretty easy to find the city limits online

  7. So when this happens who do you call, police, RAP? Saw someone by the 17th Ave Blackfoot bridge yesterday with what definitely looked like a civilian craft.

    Call CPS. It's their jurisdiction.

Those that have a permit through Transport Canada have typically alerted the fire department and CPS as part of their approval, so worst case is they'll know about it ahead of time.

  8. On page 12; "Potential Future Sites" It does indicate that new sites will be assessed over the next 3 -5 years. Firstly as a replacement of Policeman's but new boats launch sites at intermediate points later.

3-5 years to look, another 2 for environmental approvals, 4 more for funding, and suddenly it's 2025 and we're all fishing for pike out of bass boats.

I get it, this is a pretty big step for us to even get this far, and I was pro-plan when I did the survey, however this doesn't feel like enough for me.
