  1. GO HABS GO!!!!!! Only preseason, but beating Detroit twice in a week is nice. The Wings are in a class of their own, but, I think Montreal can win the East IF Price bounces back from his playoff follies and plays well. He is very young. If anyone saw the game the other night it could be described as SPEED SPEED AND MORE SPEED.

Love to see a Habs Flames final........... I can dream....

I watched some of that Habs/Wings game on TSN...unbelievable how loud those fans are for a pre-season game. And the speed/intensity was awesome, that game made the flames/Oilers look like minor league teams. That one save Price made was ridiculous! I think they will be a very strong team this year, hopefully Price will be able to handle the pressures of playoff hockey better than he did in the Philly series last year...

  2. When I was younger, we used to park at the local landfill (dump) in the late evenings and sit quietly in the truck with the engine and lights off. Then, shortly after dark, we'd turn the highbeams on too see if any bears had shown up to dig in the trash. Then, (while trying not to spill your beer), we'd jump out and put the rocks to em'...man that used to be fun...

    F'in black bears...

That's the most rednecked form of entertainment I've ever heard of. Kind of ironic coming from a guy who talks about trout poachers like they are the scum of the earth, no?

What's your beef with black bears?

  3. My first decent rod was a 5 weight Sage "LE" (probably stands for low-end). It casts like a wet noodle, pretty slow action that can be felt through the length of the rod, which made it great for learning to cast. Despite it's medium/slow action it has some serious backbone, and can handle tossing heavy streamers, big worm n bobber rigs, and it's never had a problem handling 16"+ fish. Also, the thing is a tank, I've put it through some serious abuse and it has held up beautifully with only a few scratches. I 'upgraded' to one of the new TFO Lefty Kreh models (the 4-pieces that run at around $160), and while this rod is stiffer and has significantly faster action, it is noticeably weaker when it comes to fighting fish, and has trouble handling weighted streamers and even hopper/droppers. I think it's the quality of graphite that makes such a big difference between the two rods. I also had a guide break off my 8-weight TFO for no apparent reason, after only 1 season of use. TFO's cast nicely but that's about it - you definitely get what you pay for with fly rods.

  4. Thanks everyone.

I took one home from the Elbow the other day, it was my first time filleting a fish and it worked out surprisingly well. I just fried it up with garlic butter and a splash of lime juice, and it was honestly some of the best fish I've ever had. I have a new-found appreciation for rockies :P

Next time I'll try some of the tips here.

  5. For me it was an 18 inch brown in a small side channel on the upper Elbow. I stalked it for nearly 2 weeks, watching it's feeding patterns and throwing all I had at him until I finally got him on a prince. The fight was spectacular, he was dancing on the surface like a salmon, the thing had huge shoulders. Not the biggest fish I've caught but definitely one of the most memorable and satisfying.
