  1. Adams,

Sundre Forest Products is building a road from the North Fork Road south into the triangle of land  bordered by the North Ram to the north, the Forestry Truck Road to the west and the South Ram to the south. During the construction of the road right away. tress are removed and are called "SALVAGE". The salvage will be trucked to the mill for processing.

During the meeting I attended as a representative of TU, the audience was told that the drivers are local and care. Further, a contract enforcement person is employed to check on truck drivers performance. In spite of this, the audience was told that there maybe drivers who are still being weeded out due to performance.

On a personal note,  I've been chased off the North Fork road twice by logging trucks and once by an oil field hauler. Pay attention, the road is narrow in some places. In each case, the incidence happened well away from the present  log haul  area and over 20 years ago.

    Regards,

  2. Log Haul Plan for Sundre Forest Products in the North Ram Area.

The comments below were provided by the company.

The Haul on the North Fork Road will commence on July 3rd.

One contractor, Erickson, will begin hauling from Km 49, travelling east to the mainline. Erickson’s will be hauling on the North Fork all summer from Km 49 and 47 and will move to the Gap mainline this Fall. We plan to have only one contractor on this portion of the North Fork (Km 42 – 56) for the summer so traffic will not be too heavy. Trucks are instructed to drive as if there is a vehicle around every corner. We completed line of site clearing last fall and have plans to upgrade the road over the summer for the winter log haul. This will involve shaping and grading as well as gravelling.

Another contractor, Darcar, will begin hauling from the Trout and will travel the north fork between km 42 and 41 then down the mainline so will not add much to the traffic.

Robill contracting will begin hauling on the lower portion of the mainline mid August coming out at Km 18.5 and travelling south to Hwy 752.

We do have right of way salvage from the road we are developing in the  Ram Triangle, this wood will move sporadically over the summer months but should not add significantly to the traffic.

We plan on occupying the new camp at km 61 temporarily with planters come July. The permanent camp will not be established until October.

We expect the loghaul to be busy in the winter months, starting in November.

Folks in addition to the companies comments above:

Sundre Forest Products is installing a log yard and camp facility near kilometre 60 on the North Fork Road. This facility is needed due to forest operations in the Ram Triangle. While it was not Sundre Forest Product preferred location which was south of the bridge at kilometer 61, the Govt required they locate at the present spot.

  3. Folks,

Fished Beaver Thursday > Saturday. The first two days lots of FF types there. Saturday,, there was 4 of us all day. Two didn't last more than a few hours.

Appears like FFTypes think that it is busy on weekends when truth be told, it is busier when FFeds think no one will be there.

seen much the same thing on the Crow years ago when FFTypes wouldn't go when the river was open to bait.

Not sure what this says about us.

  4. By making your own leaders, a single butt section lasts the life of most lines.

A nail knot c/w a overlay of tying thread to smooth out the knot with an added coating of super glue lets the knot slid through the tip top w/o effort.

  5. I do not blame fishermen, I really lay the blame on the lack of effort on behalf of Govt, travelling Angler's  or commercial guiding operations for taking absolutely no effort to prevent WD arriving .

Oh sure, others could also be the culprits however, but that doesn't minimize the contempt we should all have for those that did nothing.

As far as Angler's getting all hot and bothered about doing something NOW.. Do not you realize WD is in evey watershed from the N. Sask south.  Too little effort taken far too late.

  6. Folks,

Below is and abstract from a ACA funded report.

    TESTING RAINBOW SENTINEL TROUT FROM
    SOUTHERN ALBERTA RIVERS FOR
    WHIRLING DISEASE
    (2004)
    Prepared for
    Alberta Conservation Association
    By:
    Dr. Jacob John
    John Derksen, M.Sc.
    Aquculture Centre of Excellence
    Lethbridge Community College
    March 2005

    Abstract
This report presents the results of testing larval, sentinel rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus
mykiss), exposed to lentic areas populated by T. tubifex, for the presence of the Whirling
Disease pathogen (Myxobolus cerebralis) in Southern Alberta waters, specifically, the
Crowsnest, Castle, Bow and Elbow rivers. The methodology adopted for detection of the
organism in fish, was the Single Round, Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), designed
against the 18S rDNA gene in the organism. A total of 1545 sentinel fish, pooled in
groups of 5, were processed for DNA extraction from a total of 9 sites. Positive and
negative test controls revealed no signs of contamination or false results. Results from all
tested fish indicated no presence of the pathogen.

The takeaway from the report is that it only took from 2003 when the samples were caught to 2017 for the disease to scatter to every water shed  tested.  Parks are working Johnson Lake but by the spread, the source  or sources could have been anywhere. The rivers tested are the most heavily visited rivers in Alberta.

If you wish a copy of the full report, I can send it along [ need your real email]  or you can contact the ACA directly.

    regards,

    Don

  7. My wife uses an inflatable kayak. Stable and readily paddled. You will need a skeg on lakes.

We chose an inflatable kayak  as she can load it, paddle it and Morty the Mutt can wander around without dumping it.

There is no ready anchor points however.

  8. Taco,

i hope the sense of outrage will result in meaningful changes. I would suggest a "Summitt" of all users to figure out how the habitat  destruction can be turned around.

How this might be organized I haven't a clue. It would appear that the only organization who really understood the issues are the Backcountry Hunters and Anglers. They or a Govt Group would be best

    regards,

  9. This may well be the last time TUC has disappointed me.

Tbe list of previous lack of effort on TUC's part is extensive.

    The list includes:

    1) encouraging the ACA to remove support for exclusion fencing on the Dogpound, South and North Raven which in many cases returned the streams to the agricultural abuse.

    2) sitting on their hands knowing full right well WD was just over the border and them jump into life when most of the streams in southern Alberta are found effected.

    3) for the idiocy of the "Fish Rescue" on the Bow w/o any effort to fix the situation.

    4) for the complete lack of effort while Asian Carp take over waters all over Alberta

    5) for ignoring my continued requests for a statement on the use/abuse of fresh water in Alberta

    6) for thier lack of support in finding the cause of the population decline of trout to 1970 levels in Stauffer Creek

    7) fit many years I have attended Provincial Roundtable meetings along with representatives  from one end of the province to another but only twice have I seen TUC in attendance,

It is one thing to be useless., but It quite another to allow the Govt to yet again kick the can down the road for another 5 years.

    Regards,

    Don
