  1. sooo glad no one knows what I look like on the river.. there is many wackos out there in this world....

This summer I was out fishing on the Bow River.. minding my own business.... this guy comes up to me looks like a freindly fellow.. he comes up to me and Pushes me down... in the water... I got up getting my footing slowly get outta the water .. he was just standing there.. I dont know why I did it but I got out and started to pick up some rocks ane chased him throwing the rocks at him.. I got in a few times.. but there are soo many weird people out there.

Wow! Must have been very scary! What section of the river was it? I heard 17 Ave and downtown can be dangerous at times. I'd start carry a wading staff with a carbide tip.

  2. As a father and now a grandfather I've had to entertain other peoples kids on occasion. I've noticed with really young kids (2 - 8) they can get nervous very quickly in an unfamilar situation unless they are beside a parent, even if its a really fun activity. Try taking along one of his parents or an older sibling and my guess is he'll have a blast.

  3. I bought a Hyde Pro highside this year and I'm very happy with it. Easy to row. Bought it used (3 years) for half the price of a new. It was in great shape. Found is on www.Kijiji.com

  4. hey all, have been looking around at some pontoon boats. Does anybody recomend and not recomend them. and why. If you recomend them which ones are the best bang for your buck!!!. I dont wnat anything to expensive.

    I love my FishCat Cougar.

I've had it for 4 years and probably had it out 80 times or so mostly on the Bow. It's low so it handles the wind well especially on lakes. While you might want a higher profile it you want to do white water, you don't need it for the Bow. I've taken my boat down through police in late June when the river was running at 250 m/s and I could have sipped a tea without a concern.

It has 4 separate chambers, which makes me feel better. It's taken a lot of abuse and it still in great shape. The price is reasonable. The only thing I don't like it the seat slips back so I had to put a pipe clamp on to keep it in place.

  5. My wife Sally surprised me last weekend by asking to do a float on the Bow, for the first time. Although I couldn't interest her in fishing, she seemed to enjoy the float itself. At lunch I managed to pick up a couple of rainbows while she read.

As I took this picture as the camera slipped, however I thought the effect was rather interesting ....

  6. must be under new management from 10 yrs ago then becuase I'll never set foot into the one in north calgary again. They wouldnt replace a reel that fell apart the first time it was used and then accused me of "banging it on rocks" and also slandered me on several message boards. Great guys eh?

and this was after I spent over 1000 bucks on a new rod and an islander reel, and the okuma reel that fell apart.

Sorry to hear it. However ten years is a long time. I've only be a regular for ~5 years. So far they've always been good to me. Last year I asked about getting replacement rods for a ice fishing tent I had bought more than a year before. I told them I broke while trying to put the tent away in a very heavy wind and there had been nothing wrong with the tent. I was fully expecting to pay however they gave me the replacement parts for free on the spot. I've had other similar experiences over the years.

They have me as a loyal customer. The only reason I go anywhere else is if they don't have what I want....

  7. Having taken a lot of inexperience people down the river this summer I have noticed it's a hell of a lot more fun fishing with a person that isn't extirely focused on only catching fish. It's also near impossible to show someone how to cast who is focused on the fish. You are better off getting them out on the back lawn the night before or hand them a spinning rod if they much catch that fish.

I also realized I could also stand to relax a bit more myself. I now try to work a few new casts, photography etc. into my day.

    On the other hand:

    -- I still get a thrill every time I get a hook-up.

-- Still count how many fish I've netted.

    -- Measure all fish over 20 "

-- Break into a sweat and whimper if a fish is over 23"

-- Do a victory dance if a fish is more than 24"

-- Brag to friends and family about all the fish I caught till I'm told to shut up.

    Well no one is perfect....

  8. A belly boat is good in still (small) water but not well suited to the Bow or any river with a current, in my opinion. You are going to have to contend with shallow and faster throughout the day. Getting overturned is too easy in a belly boat. On the other hand a good pontoon is an execellent way to fish the Bow as well as a wider scope of other waters.

  9. I agree a 7 weight is great for streamers on the Bow. However a 8 wght is more versatile if you also want to to go after pike, stealhead etc. which is why I bought mine. If I would have to pick my overall favourite rod for the Bow it would be my 9' 6" VT2 Sage 6 wght.

  10. Aside from a hopper dropper config. which I fish regularly, my dry fishing has always been single fly. Just wondering if anyone has advice on fishing two small dries. Is it worth the hasse?l How much tippet do you run between your flies. Larger fly on top?

  11. I went to get a door key cut for my vehicle to give to our shuttle for this year. Guy at Cambodian Tire told me that he won't cut it as it's encrypted and has a chip. Guy at Home Depot says no way if there's a chip due to the liability with damaging the chip. This is all news to me - my old Mazda had a chip and I got a door key cut for it and gave it to Louise and left my ignition key in the car - like everyone else does. So now, I guess with the encryption for the remote start, it's muddying the waters. I have a Saturn Outlook....anyone with an Outlook or in a similar situation have any suggestions for me? I'm not about to go out and spend $250 for another FOB just to give to a shuttle and I know myself well enough that I shouldn't give away my spare. Any suggestions on where I can get a door key cut or any other options appreciated. Thanks.

I wouldn't want to leave my chipped key in the car. Easy target. I gave Louise my spare key (with chip) which she keeps year round. I've done this for several years without an issue.

  12. You can find definitely fish in the North West however the South has higher fish densities. Assuming you are going to be nymphing, I'd start with prince nymph # 14, and a SJW #10 for two flies that will almost always produce. As you'll discover there are thousands of other flies to choice from as well. Note: there is a ton of good advice on the basics on this site if you search through old posts.
