  1. Hooked with Mark Krupa is a great production IMO. Some great scenery and a very honest show. Makes me think of what a fishing show might be like if Conan O'Brian had one sometimes as well. Not many shows admit to 1000 casts with no fish like Mark does. Plus, I love how excited he still gets when he hooks into a fish. I do like Sport fishing on the Fly because of the low production level with pretty good fishing and good information. Plus it is usually fairly local, which is nice. It also reminds me of what a show would look like if any of us were to do a show. Mine would come with an R rating for language though. Truly the best Fly fishing show ever was "Fishing the West" with Jim Shonbourne (Sp?). Great fishing, down to earth host and unbelievable locations. The rest of the shows all pretty much suck in my opinion, but we all envy their job don't we.
  2. Thanks Buddy. That is exactly what I was looking for. Appreciate you posting them again. I wish my Wife was that quick at responding to one of my requests.....
  3. I've been fortunate to fish with some unbelievable casters. I was telling Toolman when we were on the river that one in particular, Mr. Swisher, commented that I'd obviously been fly casting for a long time. I thought he was giving me a nice compliment on my great technique, I was wrong. He said that he could tell that I never learned to cast "Properly", but it didn't really matter in someone like my case, because I'd learned how to get it out a long way or put it exactly where I wanted to. He compared it to Golf's long Drivers. When trying to go long, whether in Fly Casting or Driving a golf ball, a person has to throw some of "Perfect" technique out the window and learn what works for them. I also went to a distance casting demonstration a few years ago and was surprised at how "Ugly" some of the casts actually were, but they could shoot through their backing in just a few pumps. It was pretty impressive.. Personally, I would take accuracy over distance, For fresh water anyways. For salt water distance would be nice. With experience, you can just get closer to the fish. Plus, I rarely fish anywhere that I have enough room behind me to get a long enough back cast. I'd rather be able to roll cast 50 or 60 feet like Max and others, it's more useful. Don't get me wrong, I do think a person needs to practice to get distance to a certain degree. I just don't think it is necessary to get frustrated trying to match a world class caster. I've seen a lot of small stream masters get Beat Down by the Bow because they couldn't get to the fish.
  4. Nice tie. The Cuttroat were loving the shrimp yesturday at the Lower K lake. My patterns are different, but I found they definitely liked the patterns with the Flash in the tails. They also wouldn't touch anything smaller than a #16. Your pattern would be deadly for Steelies too I would think.
  5. 21 days to break the habit? Sounds about right.....if you don't go to Vegas. I challenge anyone to go to Vegas and stay quit with anything less than 2 or 3 months without a smoke....lol. I watched 3 of my group go off the wagon with over a month each under their belts. One of them had 6 months and couldn't resist. Good on ya SWJ. My turn now, wish me luck. (Right after this last pack) This post gave me the urge to go outside for one right now.
  6. Fishing the Crowsnest River when I was about 6 years old with my Dad and my older Brother, when my Tough older Brother starts screaming like a girl, so my Dad and I run through the bush to see how big the Bear or Cougar is that is obviously mauling him. We find my brother halfway up a tree and he's pointing at the ground at something. We walk up to see a rubber snake that somone must have lost. I still haven't let him forget that one. The same day I pointed at some Deer Poop and said, "Dad, what kind of Poop is that"? To which he replied, "Don't call it Poop, you sound like a sissy". So I asked him, "Well, what should I call it then"? He told me to just say "*hit". Sounded good to me. So I asked him, "What kind of *hit is that"? "It's Deer *hit Son"..... We got back to Grandma and Grandpa's where I informed the house of 20 or so people that I would be right back, because I had to go take a "*hit". Mom wasn't impressed. It was okay though, because now that I am married with children, I understand why I didn't get in trouble that day.... Dad did. I posted My birthday story from this past April at the AFF. I won't bore you, so long story short.... Dad acted like he'd forgotten my Birthday and in the evening, he told me there was something in the garage I should look at. I went out to find the first Fly rod I caught my first fish on, over 30 years ago sitting there. It was my Grandpa's and my Dad had gotten it awhile ago and waited for the right time to give it to me. So many memories thanks to that old rod. Made for a great day.
  7. Congrats. I don't know how you manage to stay ahead of Birchy and some of the others. Well done.
  8. Nick- Who'd you work for at Albian? I was there for more than 3 years, maybe we ran into each other. FisherKing- I work as a Project Manager and have contracts at a few of the plants up there. Barnes- Congrats on your release. Me....I'm just going in. I started on the Commissioning and start up Last week and will be there pretty much straight through until the snow flies. It's going to really cut into my fishing time, but I will be taking some time throught the summer for sure. It's nice being your own boss. Who are you working for? The big truck picture is actually a funny story. The guy from Kaltire got sent to site to check out a damaged tire. He wasn't told that it was on a 400 ton truck. Pretty good laugh back at the shop I'm sure.
  9. Just got told the same from my source. The other Mud Lake might be in trouble and someone got mixed up.
  10. It's nice to see they got away from the trailer park and took a break from working on the 78 Trans Am. You have to admire their landing skills, along with their fish handling skills. It also takes a lot of skill and knowledge to pick the correct lures off of the Walmart rack, so you have to respect that too. Lastly, I don't know about you, but I can't wait for the finished movie. It looks like it should be pretty good. Very professional. They must PVR every "Bass Masters" and "Babe Winkleman" in order to study their craft. I guess we know where the "Ugly" fish got their markings.....
  11. Plus, Keenan has no ties to Sutter and the organization like Playfair did. So if it's not working out, they can, and will fire him. Keenan would be okay with getting fired since he's gone through it so many times in the past. As long as he's not GM and just coaching, he should be pretty good. Huselius might be in trouble though. Word has it him and Keenan didn't get along in the past.
  12. Flames just announced that Mike Keenan will be the new head coach. I personally like it, but I'm sure others won't. As long as Playfair is no longer behind the bench I think it is a positive.
  13. I'm talking about the one by Lake Louise. I'm also hoping that it is a mistake that it has no fish anymore. Maybe it is the other Mud Lake. I contacted a fairly reliable source on the subject and am waiting for a response on whether or not it still has fish. Fingers are crossed
  14. How true on the weather.... I apologize to anyone that is affected by me trying to fish where they are and bringing this junk weather with me. It only happens when I drive some distance to fish. If I just hit somewhere close, it's usually beautiful. Fingers crossed for tomorrow at the Lakes.
  15. Last summer and it had fish then. It would be a shame if it lost its fish, it's a beautiful lake. It is loaded with inlets and springs, so it's hard to believe it could have a total kill, but you never know. Maybe someone is trying to keep it to themselves. I've never been the Herbert, but I heard it was pretty similar to Mud. Might have to take a drive to Mud to confirm the rumours myself.
  16. You fish the Upper or Lower more GlenBow for the Rainbows? I've had better luck for Rainbows in the Upper myself. I personally prefer fishing for the Rainbows in the K Lakes and am determined to get into one of the +30 inchers. I've had a few fights with what I think are that size and lost them, but my biggest to date is 28.5" out of the Upper and 27" Lower. Maybe tomorrow's my day, (or Rick's).
  17. You're right, it has a habit of going on and off.....and it did all day! I arrived at the Dam around 9 am and it was pretty nice. I put the pontoon together and it looked like it was going to a nice day, hardly any clouds in site and not even a breath of air. Oh yeah, I saw you snickering at me After getting everything set up, I paddle out along the shoreline and the first one blows in, so I fight my way back to the launch and wait it out in my warm vehicle. It says it's -1 celcius, but I figure it looked like it was going to blow through. It did after about 20 minutes, so I head back out. No wind and the sun is shining. This time I get about twice as far and the next one blows in. Again, I fight my way back to the launch and wait it out. This one took about half an hour to blow through, but after it did, it was beautiful. No wind and not a cloud in site, so I head back out. About 50 feet out, I get a nice hit. I fight the fish for a bit and suddenly, I am spinning in circles and heading for the rocks. The wind is blowing about 100 KMs per hour and the sky is dark. I decide I better get on the oars rather than fight the fish, so I put the rod in the holder and get control of the Toon. Well I lose the fish of course and luckily, I hadn't gotten far away from the boat launch this time as a huge Blizzard socked itself into the valley. I Threw the boat in the back and got the hell out of there by about 12:30..... And snickered at every vehicle I passed on their way in. Tomorrow's supposed to be nicer, so hopefully it makes up for today....and hopefully my frostbite is better by morning too.
  18. Shhhhh..... Kidding, Nice call. Even if you don't catch fish at Maligne, it's so beautiful, you leave happy anyway. Caught some beauties awhile back now from shore too, so you wouldn't necessarily need a boat. The day I was there a person caught one in the 24 inch area, which being a Brookie would put it up around 8 pounds. Beautiful fish.
  19. I though I saw you checking it out a few times....It kept getting hot. I like the idea of the fish on the most unlikely fly idea. I will throw an idea in to go along with it. A fly pattern could be voted on to be used and everyone in the contest would then use this one "Unlikely" fly on any of the chosen waters to make it fair for people not in Calgary. The first person to catch a fish on the fly wins. Maybe make it one of those beautiful flies from Canadian Tire or Walmart. It would take some creativity to get a fish to take it I'd say. You'd have to make a minimum size I would think as well. Sooner or later some little spring born is going to taste it.
  20. Hit the park Birchy. There's some great Brookie fishing in the Banff Park. Try Mud Lake for starters. It's a short hike, about 15 minutes and it's loaded with Brookies like the one in the video. There's Brookies in Mud that are twice that size. Mud is one of many lakes in the Park that hold decent Brook Trout. The best part is that there are Cutthtoat and Rainbows to be had as well. I've been to Mud Lake a number of times and there is has always been canoes at the lake for use too. They were still there last summer, so you don't even need to hike in your boat. You can also cast from shore if you want. Island Lake on the Alberta - BC border used to have really big Brookies in it, but I don't know anymore. My cousin caught an 8 pounder out of there a few years ago. I know it gets pounded in the winter and I'm sure not many of those caught get released. Lastly, look for beaver ponds that get Brookies stocked in them. The East and West Stoney creek beaver ponds usually have some nice 14 to 16 inch fatties to be caught. Hit Birch Lake while you are in the area of the Stoney Creek beaver ponds. It has some nice Brookies too, and the largest colony of Blue Herons in Canada apparently, which is cool. Or, we could all spend the entire summer fishing Elbow lake and keep our limits each time. This way we could thin them out and maybe allow it to become a decent fishery. It has huge potential, but there are just too many fish.
  21. lol...This would be funny. It would be like the old "Show me your CJAY" contests. I might start now just for fun. Or you could reverse it and see who could submit a picture of themselves in the most outrageous outfit worn while fishing in a busy public place like Southland Dog walking area.
  22. I like this one. Cutest Butt would be totally unfair in my favor.... Picking up Cougars while wearing waders is another, and Max already has a head start. On a serious note. How about a contest that wouldn't be swayed by experience necessarily. An essay contest from this or last season on a fishing experience, trip, etc. with a number of words limit. Personally, I love hearing fish stories whether they are funny or serious and I'm sure some good ones would get submitted. Sure people might think that some would have an advantage because of natural writing ability, but it wouldn't be about grammar and spelling, it would be about content. ....or just go with the cutest butt and send me the rod and reel right now to save time.
  23. For lakes, you can always try a good old "Carey Special" too. I don't have a picture, but it's not hard to find in a search. I usually just cast and strip it in with short, quick little strips. Another good pattern to try is a Spent Caddis. The fish are cruising around picking off emergers, cripples and spent caddis, so all you have to do is "Lead" a feeding fish by 20 feet or so and let it sit there in the surface film. If the fish are sipping off the surface and you can't get them to take what ever you are trying, throw a bouyant Caddis pattern like a "Goddard" and skate it across the surface to try to entice a strike.
  24. Right on. Firebag is off the same access road to Albian Sands from highway 63. I've never been there, but my cousing is an Engineer for Suncor full time there. Even the Engineers are in camp...Can you imagine being stuck in that camp for over 3 years straight?
  25. Sounds good Doc. I haven't been down on those "Secret" Castle Tribs in awhile. Maybe this summer. Might have to mix in some New Rock with your Slayer and Whitesnake though.
