  1. Excellent boys!
  2. I had Rio Gold and really liked it. Made it for a full season on the Bow before I trashed it. Just trying something else! Oh and a full season for me means 100 trips of so.
  3. I just picked up Sharkskin's Ultimate Trout 6 wt line today. I've got 3 spools for my Scierra reel, so I decided to put sharkskin on one of the spools to try this year. It will primarily be a nymphing and streamer line. I have a dt for dry flies. I'll let everyone know what I think. I did have the opportunity to cast one the other day and really liked it. Be fun to see how it fishes, and how tough my fingers are, though this new version claims to be much better on the hands.
  4. My dad was out with my little brother years and years ago, my brother was 5 or 6. They were catching really nice reds, 2-5 lb class fish and my little brother had caught a few. He hooks another fish "I got one Daddy!", but a few seconds later is saying "I can't hold him!!" Dad tells him how he's already caught a several and he can handle it. He never even turns around (they are in a boat, one fishing from the bow, one from the stern). Then my brother tells him again he can't handle it and dad turns around and sees my brother laying in the bottom of the boat wrapped around the rod trying to hold on. Dad picks up the rod, feels the fish and says "sorry, son." 15 minutes or so later he lands the 30-40 lb black drum!
  5. That was funny. Just like a Canadian to resort to cheating to win!
  6. Edmonton sells out every year. We always forget to buy early. We always have been able to locate tickets on swap boards, or friends, or whatever. Haven't ever been unable to get tickets, though this year may be particularly tough. Sounds like a really good line up in both places this year.
  7. I go to the folk fest every year, and have since I was in university in...... Edmonton! Putting my request for EFMF tickets on their website right now. Never been to Calgary's (though if I was ever going to go, this is the year. Franti is great live, seen Ian Tyson plenty, and Corb Lund would be great to see in Calgary), but one per year is enough for me.
  8. I don't know about the culture, or lack of it here, but I will say this. I work for a large, multi-national company. We employ people from all over the world and transfer them all over the world. The problem with transferring people in to Calgary is the fact that very many of them never want to leave. And some will leave their company instead of transferring out. I've lived in some pretty nice places in my life. Houston, New Orleans, Chicago, Orlando, San Diego, Honolulu to name a few. You couldn't drag me out of Calgary, I'm here for the duration. May not be the most cultured place in the world, but trust me, culture ain't everything. Edmonton may be more cultured (I've lived there too), but I actually find it funny anyone would rather live in Edmonton than here. I love Edmonton, and have lots of really good friends there. But please! Great fishing, great mountains, great golf, good food, loaded with pretty girls (I married one). Exactly what else could anyone want?
  9. Glad to see it turned out good for you guys Saturday!
  10. Exactly. I was showing a guy how to nymph fish the other day, fishing a very nice looking little seam. I was demonstrating how to mend line, and mended several times in one cast just to show what I was talking about ("this is an umpstreaam mend, this is a downstream mend"). All the while the indi is staying nicely just inside the seam. On about the 5th mend I felt a pull back and a couple of minutes later landed the 18" rainbow. Moral of the story is: If you are fishing where they are, you always have a chance. Learning to read the water (fishing where they are) and learning how to present (which I certainly wasn't doing properly in the story above) is way more important than having the perfect fly on. There are so many good books out on how to read water, and how to fish different circumstances. Get one and study it. Once you have that figured out, you will learn that the exact fly you have on is less important than you think. Good Luck!
  11. Wouldn't have been so bad if I had been catching anything, you arrogant little.......
  12. Just curious, but isn't that called fraud? Or robbery? And yeah Ryan, I noticed.
  13. Pelican. Not with a fly rod though. Awesome fight! Stringer with 10 live fish on it. In the literal middle of nowhere, Louisiana.
  14. Brian, I totally do not believe that last statement! I often fish in 1 to 3 hour sessions. 10 fish landed for 3 hours is a GOOD day for me. I would peg the average somewhere in the 6 range, maybe a touch less. Again, that is for me. But to the guy who says the numbers are exaggerated, I can honestly say I don't get skunked that often, assuming I'm out for more than 1 hour. It certainly happens from time to time, but it is rare. You can usually find something that works for at least one eager fish! I will add that I typically fish water I know pretty well, and have a pretty good idea of where fish should be in most conditions. Helps when you are casting to where they will likely be.
  15. From the Vancouver Sun: From what I've heard, this may have the effect of lessening the amount of diving, so that the ref's will take an injured player more seriously. As to soccer, never been my cup of tea, but I do recognize that it is the worlds most popular game and is loaded with some of the best athletes in the world. I do watch a few world cup games every year and every year I see things that take my breath away.
  16. Everyone is fine. I do have an old HS acquaintance that lost her car and anything that was outside (mowers, weed eater, bikes, etc.). I'm not sure about insurance. My bet is that the skis were insured, but I don't know if they are insured against flooding. The home certainly would be, but no damage to the house. Don't know about the landscaping, decks, stairs, etc that were surely washed away. Probably not insurable would be my bet, but I don't know that. Streamers tight to the bank would certainly yield some nice feisty largemouths!
  17. This is the backyard my sister's house in New Braunsfels, Tx. To give some perspective, we were diving off the top of the boat house last summer. It's about 10 ft to the water usually. The boat house is that thing by the tree that the boat is tied up to instead of inside it, where it belongs. The river rose 9 ft in a few hours. Both of the jet skis were lost when "debris", which was part of a roof I think, ran them over. The boat survived. They have only been in the house a couple of years and just got done all the landscaping. Looks like they'll get to do it all again! I do like the RV shot. Just think, one flood like this in the SW and we could eliminate 100s of "squatted" RVs!
  18. Frankly? Waiting until July. I can only swing so many trips down south, so I'll wait for clearer and lower. It's hard though!!
  19. A discussion of BP's liability. I'm no legal guy, but it appears it is essentially unlimited: BP Liability
  20. I don't know how many times I've looked, and I can never find that Frenchman's Creek!
  21. When I was a kid in Texas, redfish were pretty hard to come by. They had been commercially fished very hard. I would not say to the point of extinction, but populations were way down from historic norms. Today, thanks to work done by fishing organizations there are far more redfish than when I was a kid. The same is true to a lesser extent in Louisiana. So yes, it can be done. And with FAR more fishermen fishing for them. But it tooka lot of political will, and friends with lots of stroke to make it happen.
  22. I too have a 5wt wind warrior. Ovelined with a 6. I used it exclusively on my last lake trip and loved it. Currently it is my go to on the Bow as well if there isn't anything on surface. Great rod at a great price.
  23. Wonder where they got that idea?
  24. All rivers make it to the ocean eventually, except for the one's that get irrigated to death.
  25. This is a few days old, but interesting.BP's Plan
