A small piece of plywood for the base, a couple of cheap fence boards, some screws, holes and varnish. Can't remember the cost but couldn't imagine it would be over about $30-$40.

Here is the desk i created out of scraps of hardwood and a purchased sheet of MDF, and doweling

If you subscribe to Canadian Workshop, they had a great plan for a table top work bench. Published in the early 90's.

 

Copies maybe avalable at your local Library.

 

Holds all your tools and material right at hand.

I made one for myself and buddies, we al love it.
