Taco
Semi-hijack; I'm kinda waitin' on some replies on this one as well but am more interested in the software end of it. I'm about to start packin' a tablet PC for work and wouldn't mind turnin it into a GPS capable unit, which is easy enough but wouldn't mind fewer glitches and finer Canadian detail than the MS Mappoint based products. Any decent Canadian based mapping programs out there for under 500 bucks?? Sorry about halfassed derail Hoss.
Weedy1
TACO, Garmin has a Topo Canada map (if this is the detail you're after) as well as other map sets set that works in conjunction with their Mapsource software. You could buy a cheap GPS like a Garmin Etrex or a receiver only and connect it to you laptop. https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=101...303#coverageTab http://www.gpscentral.ca/products/garmin/etrex.htm https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=6445 A company called Discover Canada also makes a decent set of GPS maps although the compatibilty with Garmin Mapsource may be an issue. I have the mapset and when I did the latest Garmin Mapsorce update the Discover Canada mapset stopped working. http://www.mapamia.com/discover-canada-dig...b02164c2bbb72b9
cdock
I don't have much experience with the car mounted ones but from what I have experienced they don't have the same capability as the hand held with regards to backroads, rivers, etc. However some internet searching I have found a few that are considered "both" car mounted and portable. Weedy1's links will get you there. I'm a garmin fan myself and love my etrex with the Topo map software. I can set waypoints on the software and map out my day and then update with my tracks later from the GPS. It works great. I believe there is some kind of car kit to mount it as well. It certainly isn't fancy like the car ones that tell you when to turn and stuff which would be sweet. I'm interested to see if there is something that works well for both street and backroads.
